You have rose-tinted glasses, the 3rd gen and 4th gen were soley defined by power back then (8bit and 16bit generations). 8bit consoles which released after 16bit consoles weren't considered to be in the same generation as 16bit consoles.

As WiiU will be more powerful than current gen consoles it's kind of a moot point anyway.
Uhh...yeah, you're wrong.

16 bit consoles were much more than power. The SNES introduced an expanded controller that more than doubled the amount of buttons on the NES controller. It also was the generation when save data stored on the cart gained a much wider presence in the industry, eschewing the need for long, complicated passwords to access later content.

These are generational characteristics that changed how we played games forever.

16-bit to 32/64-bit introduced a host of things besides the power to make 3D gaming possible. The first analog stick built into the packed-in controller. Disc-based gaming which eventually became the industry standard. The introduction of memory cards allowing you to keep the cartridge/disc at home and take your save with you anywhere. Rumble.

The previous generation was the introduction of console-based online gaming. Xbox introduced the harddrive, allowing for custom playlists, etc.

My point is that if you think graphical power is the only thing that has moved forward from generation to generation, you're crazy. There are so many other things that were crucial to the industry's direction with each generation going forward. Graphics don't define the next-generation. They are merely a part of the whole.

I guess it summarizes the Wii situation pretty well when people start popping the champagne corks when a 3rd party game sells 30k first week. Really hope Nintendo start ramping up the 3rd-party relations next gen.
An FPS on the Wii in Japan moving 30k in its first week is something to be happy about.

You can actually just order the controller with enough points, so maybe no.

It is published by Nintendo afterall so it probably got enough of a push.

Nintendo also did a major push on TV commercials they were all over the place.

As for the 250,000 comment It's got to be overseas sales included doesn't it? If you look at the situation 3ds is in vs past Tales of ports, it's not a spectacular but quite a solid opening.

Gamesmaya says unusually for a tales game, the customer base was mainly thoese of the male sex:

gives some of the reason people gave for not buying the port with 3ds include(mainly female customers):
1.Not a color I want yet(3ds hardware)
2. I've already played the game,
3. 30,000 yen for the game + system is too much

16 bit consoles were much more than power. The SNES introduced an expanded controller that more than doubled the amount of buttons on the NES controller.

Yet PC Engine and Mega Drive had the same number of buttons as the NES, were these 3rd gen consoles until Street Fighter II released several years into their lives with a pad with more buttons that hardly any other games used? "Number of buttons" wasn't a defining feature of the 4th gen back then.

It also was the generation when save data stored on the cart gained a much wider presence in the industry, eschewing the need for long, complicated passwords to access later content

But this wasn't new to the 4th gen, games which could really benefit from this feature also had it in the 3rd gen (Zelda, Phantasy Star etc).

These are generational characteristics that changed how we played games forever.

Sure, but neither of them define the difference between 3rd and 4th gen consoles.

16-bit to 32/64-bit introduced a host of things besides the power to make 3D gaming possible. The first analog stick built into the packed-in controller.

Analogue sticks weren't introduced for the PS1 or Saturn until a couple of years into their lives, like Mega Drive and PC Engine they didn't suddenly move up a generation with the release of these controllers. Other systems such as the Atari Jaguar never had analogue sticks at all, but that didn't disqualify them from the 5th gen.

Disc-based gaming which eventually became the industry standard.

These were 4th gen developments, PC Engine introduced disc based gaming back in 1988, Mega CD came a few years later. This didn't make those consoles 5th gen, neither did it mean N64 was 4th gen.

The introduction of memory cards allowing you to keep the cartridge/disc at home and take your save with you anywhere.

Again, these were 4th gen developments necessitated by the inability to have battery backup on disc. Both PC Engine and Mega CD had memory cards.

See "Analogue sticks".

The previous generation was the introduction of console-based online gaming

A 4th gen development again, Mega Drive introduced online gaming in 1990, and Sega continued it with the Saturn and Dreamcast.

Xbox introduced the harddrive, allowing for custom playlists, etc.

The HDD-less Gamecube was also 6th gen.

Applying your generational definitions to Mega Drive we get;

Same number of buttons as Nes = 3rd gen
Disc based gaming = 5th gen
Memory Cards = 5th gen
Online Gaming = 6th gen

My point is that if you think graphical power is the only thing that has moved forward from generation to generation, you're crazy. There are so many other things that were crucial to the industry's direction with each generation going forward. Graphics don't define the next-generation. They are merely a part of the whole.

I don't think "graphical power is the only thing that has moved forward from generation to generation", which is why I never said that. In hindsight some of the things that you mentioned like the ability to save games and analogue sticks have pushed gaming more than just graphic improvements alone, but when defining which generation a console is in none of these are essential requirements. I really just took issue with revisionist history like this (not your post);

I also like (well, don't like, and this is a really minor gripe) how the term "next-gen" got misappropriated from its original meaning to be a purely technological term.

If anything it was even more about the technology then than it is now, you just have to take a look at the marketing from back then to see that.

I really appreciate the thoughtful response. It seems like we're basically ont he same page but saying it in different ways. The fundamental classification of consoles by generation has traditional been by means of power. However, we can recognize that it only holds so much weight as far as what has moved us forward in gaming.

Let me pour wine for http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/

The most unique feature of the site is the Japan AND English name for the game. No other site have that feature.

BTW, I have a domain name for my old company, which I still maintain (since the cost is cheap, only $15 / year). Do you think it will be useful to post the data on my site ?

I'll try to contact fellow countryman Moor Angol about it.
It seems strange to me to think that J-GC is never coming back... I don't think that's the case but I'm not up to date to be honest

There is a period between the two sentences, so it could mean that the sales question is about worldwide, and the first sentence is just to mention that the game recently came out in Japan. Could mean about japanese sales only too though, but it can be understood both ways at least :)

I'm going to assume he's talking about Japan. Cause expecting a handheld port of an old console Tales game to do better than any other handheld ports have in the past, is the sort of thing Namco would do.

I know that it'd have been a matter of time, but I remember when NDS put more than 30 titles in the chart weekly... Anyway, its presence is still strong, considering the recent hits such as Joker 2 Professional and Pokémon Typing. Will we see the Pokémon TCG Tutorial in the chart?

Maybe this is asked in the wrong thread, but does anyone know if Gloria Union is being localized? Chances are slim, right?

No word either way yet. Sting's stuff historically has a high rate of localization, but the PSP's situation is pretty unprecedented in terms of being utterly dead in North America and still very living in Japan. I would guess no if I had to. Hopefully Atlus is able to swing it.

I thought One Piece would have done a bit better.

Remember that Famitsu's last chart refers to last week, when Meruru has been released.
And still,OP is near 120k.
The series,as the top10 posted before by BKK,has serious legs.
Other examples.
One Piece Unlimited Adventure started with 40k and it has a LTD of 110k.
The two OPUC started with 50-60k,and now they are at something like 150k LTD.
The game will have great legs.
It can do even 200k.

It's a bit weird that they count Art Academy as a 2010 new IP when the game is just a compilation of two DSiWare games that were released in 2009.

I still don't get how Dead or Alive could bomb that hard.

Eh,DoA...what a bomb.
Even if the last Famitsu update said it was at 40k...wow.
The strange fact is that SSFIV was already at 100k at the end of May...so,it is selling well.
Blazblue, even with the PSP version(24k the FW),obtained to do 6k with its release.
...So,why DoA flopped?
I fear it is the brand itself which lost a lot of its strenght

I shall remain cautiously optimistic, then. Maybe Euroland gets it, maybe.

Yeah,PSP's situation is something never happened in the history of gaming industry.
PSP can be compared only with the Saturn, but even in this case, too much difference:simply,Saturn has never had a 4 million selling game :p

I don't remember such good numbers, seriously, One Piece is gaining popularity also in the video game industry!

09. [3DS] Dead or Alive: Dimensions (Tecmo Koei) {2011.05.19} - 30.597

Very sad for this, the biggest bomb on 3DS so far.

It is old because it is info as it appeared on a Famitsu magazine awhile ago, not necessarily the most recent number for 3DS games.

Thanks for posting those, BKK. I assume you have the magazines, right?

I'm not actually 100% sure that is what the chart was for, but it seemed like the only logical reason for the chart to me. I guess as Famitsu only track retail games then it's a new IP to their tracker.

Edit: Yes, those charts are transcribed from the magazines.

Yes,the manga is going very very well now,and so the anime, and games benefit from this increase of popularity.
It all started with Gigant Battle, released along side with the film, and it continued with UCSpecial, which is already over the LTD of the first Wii game, the Unlimited Adventure, and it is near the LTD of both UC1 and UC2...and this being a double port.
...But,with the Marine Ford mode, and this has helped greatly its sales so far.

I know,I know, and infact I only integrated with the datas from last weeks' charts of Famitsu.
He's doing a great job giving us lots of datas, who says he isn't? :p
And I hope we will continue having so much datas...now,we only have to conquer the first days again XD

SSF4 had the "one of the few good games at launch" effect and the previous DoA fighting game was 4 years ago.
