That sounds bad to tell the truth .
If i pick up the DS game and did not like that it mess the ps3 version up along with word of mouth.
Sound like they want you to buy the game twice just because it in HD .

isn't this a standard practice now with the HD releases of MH3P, MGS Peace Walker etc?

Uhm... No.
It's not rare that big games in the West perform particularly well in Japan. GTA on PS2, Crash on PS1, some RARE titles and so on.
And 200k is not certainly so great compared to what the game has done here and to how Japanese successful titles perform (>2-3mln).

Considering you can count the number of western properties that have ever sold 400-500k+ in Japan on your hands, I'd say it is pretty rare. Basically 1-2 franchises per generation.

Also, I think you overstate how many titles break 2-3M in Japan. It's basically just Nintendo's biggest franchises, Monster Hunter Portable, numbered Dragon Quest titles, and (previously) numbered Final Fantasy titles. A successful AAA console title in Japan sells 400k-800k these days unless it is a Nintendo title.

Both games pretty much have the same story, but the PS3 has some additions to it, such as new characters, situations, and some changes. The magic master is included inside the game as a digital version but it is also different from the DS as its actually shorter than the physical book. But theres a lot of it thats the same in both versions. Also there are cutscenes from Ghibli in both versions. I do think the PS3 version wasn't marketed as well as the DS one. Very few people I know knew of it and all of them were foreigners.

So it's essentially a remake with extra content? I had thought it was a bit more than that. If that's the case I'm not sure why people expected it to sell much more than this. There can't be that many people interested in that kind of game that doesn't own a DS or is willing to buy an upgraded version a year late.

Well I havent finished the game yet, but Im told there is content passed where the DS version ends. But since Im working through the DS version too (been doing that for most this summer since I've had no time) I cant verify it myself yet. But there are certainly many additions to the story.

Yes, in fact I was saying that very successful Western franchises performed well in past years, and this is not uncommon; both San Andreas and Vice City opened with over 200k the first week and ended with 400k copies on PS2; Fifa had some success on PS2 back in the days (over 200k), and Sony IPs such as Ratchet & Clank and Crash Bandicoot did succeed (the latter was a million seller in Japan). Obviously, it's also true that PS3 had a lot of Western games in its first years and so it creates an active fanbase in this sense, I don't think any Japanese developer should be worries about this situation concerning its country.

Level-5 is really having little success on Sony platforms. Guess they'll stick with the 3DS from now on.

White Knight Chronicles sold more than it should. Its not Sonys Faults that they can't manage to make a good Console game (since Dark Cloud 2)

Regardless of quality, games on the PS3 (and Vita) represent a bigger investment development-wise than making 3DS games. Their 3DS games continue to sell well, also regardless of quality. I can definitely see them scaling back on Sony Platforms.

Last we saw, the only 3DS game released (Layton) was selling worse than Little Battlers

Oh wow, so I guess this is one of the worst selling "big budget" RPGs on the PS3 right? Wonder why it didn't get so high. Bad marketing probably?
It actually sold a lot worse than many "small budget" RPGs on PS3. That surely had smaller marketing campaigns.

The only explanation for this much bombage I can think of is that the DS game must have been recieved really badly. Or it's a delayed response to the quality of WKC. Most likely a bit of both.

Ninokuni did worst than a Gust title lol
It did significantly worse than the last 3 Gust titles on PS3. It's good to see that the Japanese PS3 market seems to be influenced by the quality of a developer's ouput and not just marketing.

No?

I thought the last we saw about these games was the chart that Nintendo gave in the last financial report. And Little Battlers was ahead of Layton.

I guess the price cut helped Layton.

No, you cannot compare Layton on the 3DS to Little Battlers. It is an awful comparison.

What are you talking about?

Grimmy is impliying that Little Battlers wasn't successful because it didn't sell 500k copies. And that their 3ds "games" are successful, when only one game has been released and surely has not sold 500k copies.

My bad, I was looking at Famitsu data, Nintendo uses MC.

Anyway, LBE is right just above Layton. It's not like one is selling 2x as much as the other.

Apart from Layton and Inazumi11, I don't see many games doing well on the 3DS as well. The PSP was a great profitable one for them and that is a Sony one. WKC did very well for what it was and, while the investment was larger than your avarage portable games, they did break and hence getting a sequel and a spin-off on the PSP.

Don't forget that the 3DS als needs a heavier investment and a bomb will make them cry more than they do it on the Ds. Also, disregarding the quality is silly, its about word of mouth and if the game is not good, it will not sell, especially if its a Level-5 game. Its already obvious that the market are quite weary about thier output and they need to be careful not to blow the few fans they have.

I read before that Level-5 wanted Little Battlers to sell 500,000 at least. It didn't even hit 400,000.

As for 3DS, I admittedly misspoke - I meant the DS/3DS family. Layton was a launch game for a new system and it did more than Little Battlers. The PSP sold 18 million and it still couldn't even get to 500,000.

And I'm speaking from the viewpoint of Level-5, not from consumer's viewpoint. So there's nothing silly about disregarding the quality. That's not what I'm talking about.

03./00. [PS3] Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch # <RPG> (Level 5) {2011.11.17} (¥8.800) - 67.032 / NEW
Damn i've never expected this LOW sales, maybe the price has something to do with that.
This bomba sales may open for a global localization for the game, or perhaps a port to other consoles (PSVita, X360, Wii U)

Mario 3DLand is still holding up alongside the 3DS, nice!!!

I don't think Hino ever talked about sales target (search gives me Hino wanting Time Travelers to sell at least 500k).

You are also forgetting that Layton is a huge proven IP and Little Battlers was a new IP. The first installment of a new IP with similar target (Inazuma Eleven) sold 400k LTD on the DS.

Nintendo handhelds are obviously better suited to the kind of games that Level 5 makes but I think Little Batters has sold fine. And Hino probably thinks so too because a sequel is in the making.

Sometimes I wonder if Nintendo knows what they want to do with Wii in Japan. The new SKU came out very quietly, no redesign, no price cut, lost opportunity this December with Skyward Sword and motion+ audience.

Little Battlers - 18
Layton - 19

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
So Girls RPG aka Cinderella Life will probably outsell Ninokuni Ps3 ....who would have thought that.

WOW a 100k+ for battlefield 3, uncharted 3 and almost 200k for cod.

The presence of western developed games is growing in japan.

Maybe their isolationistic focus on handhelds is starting to bite them in the bum.

Which is true, but the install base is also an important factor. PSP has a vastly bigger install base than the 3DS. For a big new IP like Little Battlers, I think Level-5 has higher expectations than what it's selling now.

Hino obviously is thinking of a sequel for Little Battlers. And it will most likely be on the 3DS.
