Gamers who picked up a new copy of the latest Mass Effect novel Mass Effect: Deception now posses somewhat of a collector's item.

Mass Effect: Deception didn't exactly tell a true story.

Writing on the official BioWare forums, community manager Chris Priestly apologized for the string of errors fans found in Mass Effect: Deception, and said changes are being made for future editions of the novel.

"The teams at Del Rey and BioWare would like to extend our sincerest apologies to the Mass Effect fans for any errors and oversights made in the recent novel Mass Effect: Deception," wrote Priestly. "We are currently working on a number of changes that will appear in future editions of the novel."

Last week, Mass Effect fans published an extensive Google Docs catalog of errors found in Mass Effect: Deception, a novel set in the Mass Effect universe. These mistakes included timeline missteps like Nick and Gillian aging six years since the events of Ascension, which is set only three years before Deception.

Mass Effect: Deception released on January 31. It was penned by William C. Dietz and published by Del Rey. Dietz is the author of several game novels, including those set in the Halo, Resistance, and Hitman franchises. Dietz also served as a writer on Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita.

Should've had QA read the book, lol

Haha, Dietz, author of Halo: The Flood? What's the excuse this time? Another time constraint?

Can't believe how screwed up this book is. Don't know why Drew Karpshyn didn't just write it. Even the Bioware books are buggy now.

I just think that some of these writers just don't care. I mean most of these games have huge encyclopedia-size amount of back story and they just want the money.

Don't read the books nor do i care, but i hope ME3 wont have such mistakes.

As someone who read the book, that's a lot of shit they would have to fix. Considering nothing of any real consequence happens, they would be better off removing the book from sale and pretending it never existed.

Nah, he just didn't give a shit, just like Kai Leng!

So it's the same as every other Mass Effect book? Mass Effect 1 actually gives you a plot synopsis of the first book if you talk to Anderson about it! And ME2's book is barely mentioned outside the tutorial area with Tali.

I'm honestly surprised they acknowledged the errors at all. They haven't commented on any of their own plot holes/inconsistencies through ME2+DLC or the comics.

This is the only ME book I haven't read so it must be really bad for Bioware to take note.

Even if it's shit, people will still buy it because it's Mass Effect. That's true for the vast majority of game books. They'll fix the more glaring errors, and count even more monies as the people who bought the first edition also buy the second. Best thing to do is not buy books that are shit, no matter what game they're connected to.

Wonder if they will offer a free update to Kindle customers.

ME books have gone downhill since the first one, Karpshyn or not.

Kai Leng is shit.
Biotoic academy plot has become dull.

I strongly believe tie-in books to have mandatory shitty stories to make the games' stories shine.

Praise the video games Gods for the glorious Halo Crytpum.

It gets even better:

The director of the ME games Casey Hudson actually approved the book.

Casey Hudson
Finished my final review of the #MassEffect Deception novel. A really fun lead-in to #ME3! Kai Leng is a badass. January 31 release.

I think Casey Hudson is one of the best in the biz. But he should have foreseen this.

Didn't they bring back a character that died in the previous book? And characters had completely different personalities(racist now hitting on aliens, ect)? They'd have to redo the whole book.

Are the second and third Mass Effect novels any good?

I read Revelation and thought it was alright. I thought it did a nice job building up to Mass Effect.

Pretty common for multi authors working on a franchise, characters constantly go out of character, but they wont see that as an error. Only actual factual errors would get fixed, any stuff that seems off or out of character will remain.

I think Bioware/Mass Effect fans simply need to come to terms with the fact that the most interesting lore told in this universe was in the first's Codex. And everything following that was ruined by Mac or other writers.

Dietz portrayed Halo's Master Chief as Duke Nukem, so this is no surprise.

You could at least argue that the previous books helped build the universe, going a bit more in depth into some things and pointed at things to come. There's bugger all in Deception really.

I was amazed when I read people saying as much on the Bioware forums, personally I'm done with the books and the comics as monome is right, the quality has been going downhill. Well, the comics were always shit, but you know what I mean.

No world building? Skipping it then. That's why I read them.

Slightly off topic, but are any of the TOR novels worth a read?

Fatal Alliance was drawn out and borin. Deceived was good, but really short. Revan had questionable story choices with fans, but has lot of good background for the games setting and seems to go into stuff that will likely play a major part in the games future.

The patch will be available as a DLC. Only 10 bucks. Oh, it will also have online pass, and will be necessary to get the best ending in Mass Effect 3. Galaxy readiness, lol.

I saw this on Penny Arcade and clicked onto that file where they compiled all the things that book got wrong.

Holy mother of god. And not at the amount of errors in the book but at the amount of shit that fanboys actually know about a goddamn fictional sci-fi universe.

I mean, krogan biology? FFS, I bet they know less about human biology than they do about krogan biology.
