In honor of 25 years of Demon Summoning, GAF Plays: The (Shin) Megami Tensei series

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
CJ, I have a terrible confession to make: I've never played Nocturne. :(

I bought it last week and finally dug my PSTwo out of the mountain of stuff it was buried under. I gotta clean it up but what can I expect outside of assloads of random encounters with it?

I did it... I beat Soul Hackers.

Level 63, ~65 hours. The last fight was a tooth and nail throwdown. Got Dekunda'd, desperately revived and rebuffed my team, bastard threw out Armageddon and Megidolaon in ONE TURN, then Maken cut him in half.

Phew.

What a rush.

Can't wait for the US version!

You're a boss. Congratulations.
The final battle can be very tough if you don't have good demons but it's still manageable.

My demons were largely awful, L30s with good skills. I did not know the fusion system well enough without the language skills to break it like I normally would. If it wasn't for how good buffs are in SH, I probably wouldn't have had a prayer.

I actually fired up Persona Revelations a couple of days ago. It's pretty nice so far. How long is it (ignoring the Snow Queen alternate story)? I read ~30 hours.

30-40, easy. Maybe less if you know the dungeons. The PS1 version is really easy, PSP is a little tougher but not much.

It does suffer from IS syndrome, though. The (true) final boss is a major difficulty spike.

I'm playing Persona (PSP) right now and I have some noob problems: I'm in the SEBEC building and the monsters seem to hit my characters pretty hard thanks to my lack of equipment, but when I went to the mall the armory was closed and I couldn't buy anything. Before that, I went to the Velvet Room to get new Personas but I couldn't equip the one I created thanks to a lack of level (and the monsters in the building don't like giving their cards either), so I don't really know what to do right now to smash those little demons efficiently.

I don't think you have access to weapon/armor shops at that point in the game, although there is the casino if you're feeling lucky. At the very least, I know there are better weapons to be found in SEBEC, so that should help you out a little bit... and I think (not positive) that there's armor there as well. Check the lockers in the various offices you come across.

Thanks for the advice. I wanted some help because a special type of secret agent started punching my poor characters to death. Fortunately, I could escape before seeing the GAME OVER screen.

My SMT progress is so freaking slow haha, I gotta hurry up before Soul Hackers gets announced in the next couple weeks!

Are there any spoiler free alignment guides out there for the game? Both of the ones on GameFAQs are a little too risky for me, is it enough to say I'll be able to go Neutral if I just say no to everyone constantly? I was too dense to figure out that saying yes to either Gotou or the Embassy folks would lead to an alignment change, basically I just want something I can consult whenever a choice pops up to let me know what to do to go Neutral. Unless saying no to everyone is sufficient.

I think Persona isn't for me: Back attack, there are two enemies that do a suicidal attack that reduces the HP of the characters to 1. The rest of the enemies finish the party and game over. One thing is being cheap, this is in another level.

I'm still trying to finish Persona. The battles get so boring I can never play this game for a longer time. It's really the only SMT game I played so far that I would say is "not good".

There's something about the battle system that doesn't click with me, it has lots of mechanics, but they all seem half cooked. The battle theme was really good, though.

Does it have unwinnable battles too? :p

I'm pretty sure I'll try later, but it was so frustrating being killed by those random mobs.

No, but it does have no saving within the dungeon and lots of mobs that spam instant kills like Mamudo.
you can quicksave and copy it to a backup, and if you're in the Thanatos Tower you damn well better.

Then I'll try beating this damned building to see the rest of the game. I'll pray to the RNG God to not see those pesky enemies again in a back attack.

Where are you at? The mall? That's the first tricky dungeon in the game. Rememeber: Pixie+Megido = broken.

Who's your fifth team member? Ayase is amazing with magic.

Don't laugh at me... SEBEC. I was doing a trip to those rooms with lockers to get better equipment and the famous encounter appeared.

My fifth member is Brown, I hope he isn't bad.

He's probably the worst, but none of them are bad. You get stuck with him for SQQ, and him and Elly beat the final boss solo in my game due to how awesome their Personas were.

Anywho, stick with it. No dungeon in that game is particularly brutal aside from the true final dungeon. The only reason the towers in SQQ are tough is due to time constraints and no saving.
Also, his spear/gun have great range.

That's how I feel about the persona series in general. I haven't put a significant amount of time in p1 though.

Finally finished the SEBEC building. Thanks to a velvet room inside it I could create two new cool personas that made the boss relatively easy. The only trouble I had was that Nanjo kicked the bucket again.
This game's Igor likes to screw up my fusions and 2 of 3 had unexpected results and I couldn't get a precious persona with Media thanks to that.

There's a thing bothering me right now: My main character takes more damage than anyone from Mudoon (1/2 the total HP) and it doesn't say anything about him being weak to that in the status screen. He even has the highest magic defense. I don't understand anything!!!

Phaleg, Judgement. Is it because of the arcana/order?

Yeah, Phaleg takes 200% damage from Curse/Death spells. Mudo is Curse, Eiha is Death (I think?). You can check resistances on the Persona status menu, I think. You may have to press triangle or square to change what information is displayed though. I don't really remember because it's been years since I played this.

I only see that it's weak to Physical. Its type is Light so I suppose they want me to memorize that Light is weak to curse/death.

What? Mudo is not instant death in Persona???

I was surprised when I saw that it wasn't. Hama/Mudo keep doing damage each turn after you cast them in an enemy (If you do X damage with it, the enemy will be damaged by that amount in each succesive turn).

Huh, I loaded it up and checked, and yeah, I guess not. I could have sworn they added in one of those charts that shows what's weak to what like in P3/P4. But yeah, all Judgement Personas are weak to Death and Curse, even though it only lists Physical.

Maybe I've missed where they said that about Judgement personas. I suppose Death personas have the same weakness against Hama, so I think I shouldn't use them too much as Hama/Mudo are pretty strong in this game even if they aren't instant kill spells.

Judgement personas are actually pretty broken. You basically get total magic immunity at the price of a Mudo/Eiha weakness, and those don't even instant kill you. Physical attacks will rarely be a problem, either.

It isn't uncommon to have Phaleg in the final battle for its cheap Mediarama spell.

30 - 40 easy? o_O

It took me something like 18 hours on my first (And only) run-through.

Also, P1 is easily the weakest in the series (By a country mile), but the ending at the very least is really good.

Yeah, I love using Mediarama right now as a "cure all" for only 12 SP, but there are some possessed toilet seats where I am now that cast Mudoon and kill my poor character immediately thanks to the double damage (x4 actually thanks to Mudo's special effect, so it's about 140 of damage).

I HATE Marin Karin, it's even more dangerous than Mudoon. Weak enemies can destroy you in a spiral of characters hitting themselves, failed attempts at fleeing and residual damage.

Heropon

Is the ability to cast 12 SP Megidolas considered broken? Only the monsters that reflect nuclear spells and the Marin Karin casters are safe from me now, mwahahaha!

My adventures in the world of Persona PSP: SEBEC route continue while I discover new ways to trivialize random battles. After my affair with 12 SP Megidola, I've fallen in love with one of my previous enemies: The charm status effect! Thanks to buying bullets that cause it and SMGs that do 7 guaranteed hits, the demons start attacking themselves while they eat some plumber. At last that status effect stack counter is useful for me after suffering its effects!

In memory of Mitsuru Kirijo: MARIN KARIN, MARIN KARIN, MARIN KARIN, MARIN KARIN, MARIN KARIN!

Just realized, from the OP...

Soul Hackers came out on December 13th, 1997.

15th anniversary would be a heck of a day to announce a localization.

Beat Devil Survivor 2 the other night, marking the second time out of the many MT games I've played that I managed to beat one (besides Last Bible 2 on GBC.) I wound up on the restorer ending, and it was pretty cool. I must say, this is one of the better SRPGs I've played, up there with FFT Advance and the Disgaea series. I liked how this had a heavy focus on strategy that's too rare in these games. Going back for the other routes now.
