Impressions:

So it has been a while since my last update - life can get in the way as I'm sure everyone knows.

Anyway, I finished off VLR having suffered from teh save corruption bug last year. Brilliant. Mind-boggling. A must-play for everyone. It would ruin the game to discuss any of why it is so brilliant. Typically I prioritise gameplay over story, but this is my exception. Buy it. Now.

Speaking of buying, I bought MH3U. I played Tri far too much and this has more content. Oh dear. I'm already forty-hours deep. It will be difficult to know when this game counts as beaten but oh well.

I'd like to polish off NSMB U if I have the time - I'm up to World 7. Similarly, Sonic Racing is near the end though I am loathe to go back to it. It is good but it never grabbed me as other arcadey racers have done - Burnout/CTR/MK7.

If I can beat those two plus one more then that covers the three next games I want to purchase: NFS:MW, Fire Emblem and Luigi's Mansion 2.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3)
Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (PC)
Dead or Alive: Dimensions (3DS)

Forgot I had Heart of the Swarm ordered and DOA I found on clearance for $AU20ish. Still, after this I can't imagine buying anything before GTAV.

Beaten:
Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium (PS2)
Half-Life: Blue Shift (PC)
Far Cry 3 (Xbox 360)
Okami HD (PS3)
The Walking Dead (PS3)

Dishonored (Xbox 360)
Syndicate (Xbox 360)
Halo 4 (Xbox 360)
LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Xbox 360)
Dragon's Dogma (Xbox 360)

March wasn't really a super productive month because I took on Dragon's Dogma, which took about 40 hours spread mostly over weeknights. I really enjoyed the game, but I wish there were some better fast travel options. Didn't matter so much after you get over the initial difficulty hump, but I reckon the game would have been 10 hours shorter easily if I could warp to more than one place without having to find port crystals. LEGO Batman 2 was ace - I think it's the first legitimately good Superman game.

Now Playing:
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - the missus and I each decided to start the game over the four day Easter break. I think it will spill over into the regular week though.

Resident Evil 6: Personally I don't think it's as bad as people make out, but it's lost a lot of the things that RE4 and 5 feel rock solid.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance: On break, will come back to it.

Seem to be focusing too much on my 2012/13 purchases and not getting stuck into the 2008-2010 stuff.

Great progress for me during March since I only bought one game, and finished quite a few. Im actually tempted to get Atelier Totori Plus but decided not to buy it yet, since my budget is kinda tight right now and I still don't have a job.

Im still struggling with Atelier Ayesha though since I barely have any chance to play due to the tv being used from morning till evening. Its at times like this I would seriously appreciate off-screen play of Wii U or Remote Play wherein you can actually play games on the Vita. I think I've only spent less than 5 hours total with the game.

However, I still got other games that kept me occupied. Spent majority of my gaming time with Etrian Odyssey IV. Its technically and mechanically the best in the series due the various improvements in interface and gameplay balance. But my presonal favorite in the series would still be Etrian Odyssey III. Im currently on my 3rd playthrough, but I slowed down significantly on this one. Also, finally finished Eternal Punishment. Actually, after playing Innocent Sin last year, the game felt dated and slow thanks to various improvements they did with IS PSP. So far, the ending is what I've expected from the P2 duology. I've been spoiled already by my friends before, but I got a few stuff clarified with this regular playthrough. Still wish we got the PSP version :( I decided to play some games I've barely played on Steam and then saw A.R.E.S., it felt like a Megaman x Metroidvania game and I'd say its decent, but Im seriously not a fan. Sonic Adventure DX is weird one for me since I kinda hated it. I guess I just got too used with the gameplay I've experienced with Unleashed, Colors and Generations that this game felt clunky. But then again, I've only spent time with Sonic and didn't bother with the other characters and Im fine with what I've played up to that point.

Right now, Im not playing anything since Im struggling to get some gametime with Atelier Ayesha. I have Mana Khemia but Im actually busy reading some manga right now. I also have some free games I got from the App Store but Im not including them this time. There was also those free game promotion for Vita but I just don't feel like playing them tbh. But I might spend sometime with them in the future. Right now, Im anticipating Soul Hackers, but the release is still a bit far though.

I've made so little progress these past few months and I broke my no new games rule! At least I'm approaching the end of Inazuma Eleven 2 and Legend of Grimrock I suppose.

Rollcage isn't as good as I remember, some of the track layouts are suspect and you have the uncanny ability to end up facing the opposite direction at the slightest touch. I think it's telling that they added a button to make you face the correct direction. I am still enjoying it though and plan to keep playing it for a while longer. It also runs without issue on modern operating systems which is a nice change.

New Current Score: +2

Currently Playing
Bioshock Infinite - Doing a second runthrough on 1999 mode. I love the game too much not to play it again even though I've already beaten it. But after that, on to greener pastures!

On the Agenda
Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - (I got through the first act and then hit a lull. Will likely go back to this after Bioshock.)
Deadly Premonition - (This has been sitting unfinished for a long time and I really want to actually play it for the story.)
Resonance of Fate - (So close to the end, it's taunting me.)

This month was a bit of a slide back for me. I got caught up in Redbox fever and ended up renting both Tomb Raider and Hitman Absolution. While I didn't purchase them, I feel I rented them with the intention of starting a new game I'd never played before and therefore added them to my list of "new" games. But I also beat both of them before having to return them, so overall they are both nulls on my list. El Shaddai was a surprise purchase for me, but I'd been wanting it for a while and it hit $2 in a sale on the 360 so I had to jump at the chance, especially since I had a little over $2 sitting leftover in my Microsoft Points account.

Still I'm overall positive for the year, which makes me happy.

Overall:
Bought in 2013: 9
Beat in 2013: 13
Current Score: +4

Bought in March:
Sine Mora (PSVita)
Sleeping Dogs (PS3)
Adventure Time (3DS)

Beaten with Quick Impressions:
Sin & Punishment: Star Successor--Game had a weird difficulty curve for me. Easy was too easy; medium was too hard. Ended up playing on Easy mode because I wanted to feel like I could actually finish it and be able to look at other things on screen than just the enemey. The shooting and sword/melee stuff was interesting and I liked the horizontal-scrolling levels when they happened.

Sine Mora--super fun and scratched a Shoot-em-up itch I didn't know I had. Really loved the art direction and visuals; gorgeous on the Vita. Felt a little short, but I don't know how much more I would've wanted to play anyway. The
rotating
boss was interesting design, but a little frustrating.

Yakuza 4--came back to this finally after a year and a half and mostly enjoyed myself. I think the environment is beautiful and really liked the combat. The stories got more interesting towards the end to me, but I found myself having little interest in side missions. Very cinematic.

Sleeping Dogs--I rented this one and broke down and bought it with some gift certificates this month also. Hong Kong is beautiful in this and loved doing the little side things as well. Never really felt compelled to screw around in the world and always tried doing some objective, which I guess is a way of saying that it held my attention all the time. Story got great towards the end and would really like a sequel.

Liberation Maiden--good God, this was short. An hour? Maybe 1.5 hours. Did not feel like it was worth whatever I paid for it. I had a hard time telling if I was doing the right thing when attacking stuff and it was extremely uncomfortable for me to be able to hold the 3DS and play at times.

Hopefully I'm done buying games for a while now. It's hard to pass up incredible Steam sales but unfortunately buying a Broken Sword three-pack means three more games for the backlog. :(

I'll have to go on an adventure game binge at some point, clear out some backlog a little faster so I can feel totally guilt-free about whatever Steam pack comes next.

EDIT: Ohhhhh god, I just remembered BattleBlock Theater is out this week and Guacamelee is next week..... sigh.

BioShock: Infinite: Well worth the 5 and half year wait. Fantastic from start to finish. Rather than going through a laundry list of great things this title does I'll just say if you haven't played this already do it now!

Halo 3:ODST: Story wise I found this to be the best entry into the Halo series yet. Loved the Neo-Noir atmosphere and had a haunting soundtrack throughout. I'd love to see Bungie try something along the lines of Blade Runner after this but sadly we're getting another future themed shooter eg. Destiny.

Edit: Sent back Devil Survivor: Overclocked due to a few little bugs. Adjusted score accordingly

SimCity (Origin)
LEGO City Undercover (Wii U)
Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (Wii U Virtual Console)
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (PS3)
Bioshock Infinite (Steam)

Finished in March 2013 (2):

Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) - Ended up mostly being a fan of the battle system but I couldn't be bothered to invest a lot of time into the side quests. I had tried looking into the specifics of how you can finally get some decent money in this game, and what might be good paths to take for weapon / accessory upgrades, but I just didn't find the process compelling enough. It didn't help that I was completely indifferent to all the characters and story beats this game offered, even at the end. No desire to continue with XIII-2 and XIII-3.
Bioshock Infinite (Steam) - Now here's a game on the opposite end of the spectrum. Great characters and story with a satisfying ending. I was thrilled to see how compelling a shooter it is too, given that Bioshock's mechanics weren't the best when it came out. They could still use some work here, but there's something about using the skyrails on the battlefield to quickly get out of a hot spot and attack from a different angle that ratchets up the intensity and freedom in a brilliant way.

Currently Playing:

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (360) - I don't know if I care that I ever finish this game. It's just fun to play around in.
LEGO City Undercover (Wii U) - Casually playing this when I get some time. Gameplay is pretty simple but the writing is funny and the characters are enjoyable.
Dark Souls (Steam) - Replaying on PC. Currently in the upper level of Blighttown.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) - Before getting this I was discouraged at reviewers talking about how the game was more action focused, with less puzzles and interesting ghosts to deal with. I don't know, I'm on the 5th mission and I'm enjoying it alright. If it wasn't a handheld game then I might harp on the same issues, but on this hardware they need to keep the missions relatively short with consistent gameplay loops.

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
We should do another "Beat Three" for April. That dented my backlog nicely.
Pretty sure Grief.exe is planning to make the thread again this month, though he was floating the idea of it only being two because college students have exams.

It's up. 2 min after you posted this! It's 2 for April

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=532986

edit: I'm a little torn on my priorities right now. I've been playing ME3 multiplayer all last week and weekend, put probably 20+ hours into it with my wife and friends. We're having a blast but I put my backlog on hold indefinitely because of it. That 20+ hours could have been spent towards a game(s) on my backlog, you know? Still, I think the social aspect of playing with my wife and our friends is more important, but I can't help but feel conflicted.

Update. Damn you, Steam sales. But I also faced cold hard reality and removed a lot of games that I bought on impulse and had no real interest in or tried for a few minutes and didn't grab me at all. I shortened up the number of sections I had because this list is gonna grow even bigger, baby.

I didn't buy anything this month too. Just stuff I won on Steamgifts. I really want to get at least two more games finished this month.

Hahaha. I'd be happy if I could finish as much as I acquire. Shame my reading comprehension sucks as Het_Nkik, who posted way before me has bought 7 more than me. I don't know if second most frivolous in the thread is an accolade I should be proud of :p

Yeah, if you're saying you have problems, I definitely have problems. But hey, we both have 16 beat so far which is really good for only three months in. If I can keep at this pace up I'll double how many games I beat in 2012.

Rented and beat BioShock Infinite over the weekend. Does that count as a +1? It's not free since I paid for it, but I don't own the game so I can't give it a -1. I'll keep it as a +1 unless people think differently.

I also bought Dead or Alive 5, so that's one more -1 that I'm going to have to deal with eventually.

Fractured Soul - Did not care for this game. It had received pretty good reviews when it came out and I thought I would dig it based on some videos. The game was difficult, but not in the fun way. I was never able to get into a natural rhythm of switching screens which lead me to repeat sections until I memorized the enemy and trap placement. On top of that, it's a pretty ugly game and there's virtually no story. Overall a disappointing experience.

Ninja Gaiden (NES) - Not much too say. Classic game that I was never able to beat. Thanks to the save states on the 3DS, I finally completed it. Still controls fantastically and I'm glad to have it portable.

I did the same thing with Tomb Raider and Hitman Absolution this month. I counted them both as null overall (-1 and +1) simply because even though I was only rented it, I brought a game I previously hadn't played before home with the intention of playing it. So...shrug. Mileage may vary, I don't think it matters how you decide to do it.

Well seeing as I managed to finish 2 GAF darlings back to back there little more I can say about either. Although they do share something in common...

Binary Domain: Absolutely corking story and fantastic setting. Always been a fan of the Yakuza series but Nagoshi has outdone himself here. Lots of Blade Runner and iRobot vibes from this. Gameplay wise, my god is it a chore. I finished it on Survivor (hard) difficulty and as per most games it just turns the enemies into bullet sponges. Voice controls for squad interactions was a nice touch but don't work all that well (or not cater for British folks). If only there was a TPS with good gameplay...

Vanquish: If Binary Domain had the story this has THE gameplay. Short at around 4-5 hours but nothing in a shooting sense comes close to Vanquish. Everything revolves around speed and style. Battles despite involving a lot of enemies at once are easy to manage with the Slide and AR modes and is still fun for me going through a second time. The story and setting though is a case of so bad it could be conceived as good. JP Kellams is a great guy (and an active poster here so no offense JP) but the dialogue is stuff a 14 year old would think is cool.

Now if only you could take the story and setting of Binary Domain and the gameplay of Vanquish and you'd have probably the best TPS, maybe even best game ever and I'm not even kidding.

Hmm, not sure if the new Sim City has challenges or scenarios. There are these things called "Great Works" which I might use as my defining point of completion.

I think I'm close to having my fill of ME3 MP. Played for like an hour last night and the spark just wasn't there. Looks like back to my backlog for a while, which brings me to:

Ico HD is beat. I hated the gameplay. First 2 hours were absolutely agonizing for me. I came very close to quitting at the 50% mark but decided to just use an FAQ to get to the end; I made it to that point in little time, figured I could withstand the rest.

HOT. DAMN. What an ending. I've done a complete 180 on it and am in love. I still hated the gameplay and am glad I used an FAQ, but the ending is wonderful! I've played Shadow of the Colossus already but not the HD version; looking forward to it but will play a different title or two before circling back. Makes the wait for TLG hard for me now.

Puts me at +5, for now.

2. Persona 4 (PS2) - 1/28

Jade Empire was next on my list but I might want something a little more current after Ico. What I hated was his tendency to jump in whatever direction I didn't want him to, and the Yorda A.I. drove me bonkers at times. Sweeping camera made me run off ledges like a moron, resulting in too many cheap deaths. Gonna take the rest of tonight to think of what game to play next.

My wife and I moved and I started a new job recently, so not much gaming recently. I did buy the Humble Mobile Bundle, Gunman Clive, NSMB2, and HarmoKnight. Finished Gunman Clive and Let's Golf 3D, but beyond that, not much action recently. Gunman Clive was pretty good, especially with real controls on the 3DS. Let's Golf 3D was just OK. Passable, blatant HSG rip-off with insanely long load times, lack of depth, and poor polish. How IGN gave this a 9 is beyond me.

Anyway, still +5 for the year.

I've been playing it on my Galaxy SIII and the controls are really my only big complaint and the only thing keeping me from beating it. :(

EDIT: LOL just gave it another go and beat it on the first try.

I will try and update with some impressions at some point. March had a fair few really short games that I did not know whether to include or not, but I ultimately made the decision to do so. I also bought quite a few games I probably shouldn't have as I am already focused on a bunch of other titles.

Not listed (due to receiving in April) are Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon and Injustice: Gods Among Us (iOS version), both of which I have become very addicted to. The animations in Luigi's Mansion are sublime and the rest of the game is so charming it is fast becoming one of my favourite 3DS games. The iOS Injustice game is not really that deep, and its built around using the expensive IAPs (of which I admit I bought a couple of booster packs) but I am enjoying it.

On the back-burner we have Halo 3: ODST which I am going through with my old man, Luigi's Mansion (the original) which I have put down in favour of the newer game, Ocarina Of Time (N64) which I have almost finished and Jedi Academy which I have just started. No doubt I will get distracted this month as I do every month, though.

I definitely need to join this venture. My backlog is getting scary and intimidating. Will make a list later, although I'm afraid even to start!

Enjoying Judgment very much. It's different from the previous games, but I still enjoy it even though it's not as great as Gears 3. Still a decent game that I plan to invest a lot of time into.

- 04/17:
• Dead Island GOTY edition beaten with my brother: Damn, what a fun game. It has some glitches here and there (there was one in particular that blocked my brother's ps3 a couple of times), but other than that, it's a blast to play (and it's long, with lot of missions to do). I still have to play the singleplayer dlc, but i wont anytime soon.
- 04/14:
• Guacamelee! beaten: If you like metroidvania games, buy this game asap. It's Amazing.
- 04/10:
• I bought Guacamelee! and started playing Metal Gear Solid 3 HD and Guacamelee! on Vita.
• I have some university exams in 1 month and 10 days, so only portable games and dead island for me until i finish them. Everything else to the on hold list.

What is your guys' approach to buying games on multiple systems.

I.e. I bought BF3 on 360, and just repurchased on PC. Would you consider that a -1?
