M&L has already bigger than usual discounts, big amount of unsold stock and holidays just ended. Things are about to get worse, not better.

Yeah content really is king, 3DS obviously owns Japan, and it was the number one selling console in the states too last month, so i'm not seeing how handheld gaming is dying or dead or on the way out. As long as they release games people want to play, they'll sell.

SMT IV is long running franchise while Dragon's Crown is a new IP, so I thought this little strange. Did they do massive advertising for the game?

Not really SMT IV sold more than SMT III so it did about as good as could be expected. They're not exactly known to be friendly to everyone given ita difficulty, and its sticking to hardcore dungeon crawling w/ minimal story.

I would say the advertising was much heavier for SMT than Dragons Crown.
there were ads everywhere especially convenient stores where 3ds games are often sold.

Hint: it sells less in USA than PSP did at similar point in it's life , not even talking about DS numbers.

Japan is a totally different market than the west when it comes to handhelds.

The 3DS might be king over there, but out in the west, it's doing alright at best compared to the DS.

Is 200k LTD number for new IP like Toukiden is good?

It's doing better than Soul Sacrifice. And it seems to have good legs. PSP and Vita, it has sold more than 350.000 copies, and it's still selling like 10k combined every week. So yes, I think it could find some kind of success (I think it could reach God Eater level of success). If the next Toukiden game is PSVita only, it could move some units for its PSP fanbase.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Almost 30 titles for 3DS in Dengeki top 50...isn't the biggest software presence for 3DS since it launched?

MH3U Rise Up This Is The Beginning

2,994 > 2,275 > 2,255 > 3,083 (315,431)

I wonder if MH4 will kill MH3U or bring new players.

Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney - 3,263 (273,257)

Still charting! Slay a bit.

Toukiden PSP - 4,822 > 5,144 (148,536)
Toukiden PSV - 4,372 > 4,994 (216,743)

Its first increase, I believe.

I wonder if that's another 100k seller on Vita list:

[PSV] Ragnarok Odyssey Ace <ACT> (GungHo Online Entertainment) (¥4.935)
The original sold 75k, I don't think it's possible, especially not with a PS3 version.

So Yakuza Ishin was confirmed for an unspecified PlayStation platform and got its first screenshots.

I would say this is a pretty realistic bar for what a higher-mid tier Japanese developer will produce for the PS4 that focuses on graphics.

Things like Tales will presumably still look like uprezzed PS2 games with a bit of extra detail though.

There are way more here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=658453

The PSV LTD that make it so impressive since PSP have larger install base. I guess its true that Vita being a lively niche platform in Japan, since I think that Tecmo-Koei is quite niche on their own (I compared to Bamco, and SE lol).

Anybody have a price comparison for the 3DS and DS at their same point of life?

June 2007 (2 years, 6 months from launch)
DS - 15,000 JPY (close to being fully discontinued with retailer discounts)
DS Lite - 16,800 JPY

August 2013 (2 years, 6 months from launch)
3DS - 15,000 JPY
3DS LL - 18,900 JPY

thanks! I am really curious how FFXIVARR will do.
Considering the price it could do similar to DQX? Hopefully anyway.

Wonder how Ragnorak will do. It's another monster hunting action game right? Could do well with Vita's audience...but I wouldn't expect any jump in Vita's hardware sales for it.

Ragnarok is an enhanced version of a launch windows vita game. It did something like 75-100k. I don't expect this one to do much better, especially with the PS3 version. It was also kinda mediocre, so it might actually do worse...

I also assume there's only so much MH clone an audience is willing to buy in a year. They already got 2 of them this year, and there's another 2 coming...

So this was interesting: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=658709

15 Japanese publishers lead by Sega (including Capcom and Square Enix) have decided to start a mobile cross promotion alliance to save on advertising and distribution costs.

The goal is to help break away from the "double taxation" effect of paying both GREE/Mobage and the platform hold (Apple/Google) when selling mobile games.

They're hoping to get 15 more after they start.

I think this is the first time we've seen so many Japanese publishers unify around the same thing in quite some time.

I suspect this is also a sign of even more mobile focus from our major Japanese third parties, since they also plan to promote mobile games that aren't social games through this network.

So their goal is to bypass GREE and Mobage? (I honestly don't really get the point of Gree and Mobage anyway tbh, never really understand where they fit between publishers and app stores)

They're essentially networks that span both feature phones and smartphones and your game gets promoted by them for being on the service (and you pay to be on the service).

They're essentially the publisher/distributor of the games on their service which are developed by publishers for them.

Or, put another way, in a traditional publisher/developer relationship, DeNA/GREE would be the publisher, and Square Enix/Sega/etc would be the developer.

So, instead of publishing through DeNA/GREE, these publishers are trying to make an advertising/cross-promotion network that's strong enough that they don't need to be on DeNA/GREE in order for their games to be a success, and thus make more money.

Basically they consider mobile to now be crucial enough to their business that improving margins on mobile games is important enough to invest in creating their own marketing/publishing network instead of using the existing ones.

Reading retailers first impressions, Super Robot Wars is selling less than expected. PS3 >>> PSV
Dungeon & Dragons is selling well.
Conception II for PSV also selling well, 3DS version no existent.

This was a no brainer, I don't even know why 3DS version was made.
Pretty sure there has been quite a number of people in previous Media Create threads arguing that all Japanese console games should move over to the 3DS. That its much larger userbase and top selling franchises means everything would sell better on it.

Thanks! Not sure what to make of it. The difference in price between DS lite and 3DS LL would be pretty negligible for me but I've suspected for a while that the form factor is a bigger reason.

ha, this is going to be fun :)

Pretty sure there has been quite a number of people in previous Media Create threads arguing that all Japanese console games should move over to the 3DS. That its much larger userbase and top selling franchises means everything would sell better on it.
Obviously wrong, especially for a niche game like Conception, install base means shit here.

What the DS current price?

Amazon.co.jp is selling the DSi for a discounted 10,150 JPY (-32% off MSRP) through 11,599 JPY (-23%).

Although keep in mind, this is just offloading existing stock. NCL is no longer shipping new Nintendo DS consoles to Japanese retailers.

There isn't first day info for a Saturday release unless enterbrain decides to give early report on Monday or Tuesday for W101 record opening sales.

Oh okay. Thanks for the heads up. :)

Well, with stuff like New Love Plus and Senran Kagura already on the system, you'd think there would be at least some sort of audience for this.
But there is, otherwise we wouldn't see a 3DS version to a PSP sequel. Just not as much as on Sony platforms.

A random 50k game is a random 50k game, be it on a 10M or 1M install base.

Some outrageous posts can and should be ignored.

Yeah content really is king, 3DS obviously owns Japan, and it was the number one selling console in the states too last month, so i'm not seeing how handheld gaming is dying or dead or on the way out. As long as they release games people want to play, they'll sell.

I think mobile has certainly cut into the userbase. That being said, the software output, and more importantly, the QUALITY of the output, has allowed the 3DS to fly against those headwinds.

Seriously, almost every 1st party nintendo game on the 3DS is the best game in the respective franchise.

Toukiden is doing really well on both PS Vita and PSP. Currently on ~370k sold.

I think it could stretch to around 500k across both devices by the end of the year when factoring in digital download. (talking total shipped here)

Hopefully KOEI can give us a shipped number in November.

If you expect DQX Wii performance get ready for huge disappointment.

As for Ragnarok Ace sinobi doesn't look very excited from its preorders.
Really? I thought I was being kinda realistic in seeing FFXIV doing around 400k. Damn, that's gonna be some bad numbers if you're right.

Thanks did not know it was just an enhanced port!

That 3DS domination. Pretty crazy that over half of the top 30 had increases in sales. It is crazy to see Pikmin 2 in the top 30. Also Brawl is in the top 50. Mind/Zero is already on its way out of the top 50.

I wonder if Nippon Ichi is happy or not with the sales of The Witch and the Hundred Knights. Will end up with over 80K soon.
