My fellow GAFers! Have you dreamed of writing a novel some day, but somehow never gotten around to it? Do you hate having free time? Then NaNoWriMo may be right for you.

http://www.nanowrimo.org

NaNoWriMo.org said:
What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.

Who: You!

Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.

When: Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight.
Write a 50,000 word (175 page) novel in a month? Yes it's insane, but that's the point. Write like hell, shut down your internal editor (that can come later), and just get it done.

NaNoWriMo.org said:
Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.
We're now in November, but it's not too late! Join us!

We had 110 GAF participants and 36 winners last year. Let's see if we can beat our high score for another year!

I will keep this post updated with participants and their word counts.

Useful tools:
Software:
Scrivener: a word processor that incorporates scene and character notes, outlines, research documents, and more. Get a free trial through December for NaNo. (And a discount on the full version if you win!)
Q10: an alternative word processor which removes all distractions, helping you focus on your work.
Write or Die: start writing in a text box. And don't stop... or else. Give it a try, very motivating. (click the "web app" button for the online version)
Sites:
Snowflake Method: a highly recommended system that helps you get from single-sentence plot to detailed outline. I have used this several times and it was instrumental in my actually completing my novels.
Adoptions: on the NaNo forums, it's traditional to leave some ideas that other people can pick up and run with. Adopt a plot, adopt a plot twist, adopt a title, and many more!
NaNo Sprints: start your engines! Get off to the races with some NaNo sprints, where you compete with other NaNoers to write a bunch of words in a short interval. Also on Twitter.
Backwards NaNo: a slightly different way of managing your word count. It's amortized! That means for the first two weeks, you're writing a lot more than everyone else. But by the last day, you only have to write a single word! (I might give this a try this year)
Other:
How to Get and Develop Killer Story Ideas: Youtube video of a con lecture. Does what it says on the tin.
No Plot? No Problem: a book by the site's founder, intended as an aid for completing your novel and getting through the month.
The 90-Day Novel: sure we don't have 90 days, but a reliable source tells me this book is a "wildly useful resource."

And, of course, this thread! Feel free to post questions here, or ask for feedback on your outline/structure, or just complain about how goddamn hard it is. We're here for you! The camaraderie is part of what makes it fun. :)

FAQ:
The internets are broken?
No, the site is just getting hammered. This happens every year.

How do I write 50k words?
One at a time. Seriously though, if you can keep up with the benchmark (1,667 a day) you're golden. If you can't, don't panic, just set aside a weekend day or days to play catchup.

Any other strategies?
If you can, aim for 2000 a day rather than just keeping pace with the benchmark. This leaves you some elbow room for a few bad days later on in the month, which is a huge help for the week 2-3 doldrums. Also, try the sprints and word wars!

How do I update my word count?
They don't have very good grouping features on the site, so we just use the OP to keep up to date. If you want your word count updated, post your final word count for the day in this thread. I'll try to update the leaderboard in this post daily, most likely in the morning.

Is there any reason to actually sign up on the site itself?
Yes! First of all, you can have your novel officially validated by the site (copy/paste from your word processor into their word counter). This lets you officially win, and gets you congratulations and all sorts of fame and glory. Second, by signing up, you will get "pep talk" emails each week from famous authors. This year, that list includes Pat Rothfuss, Lev Grossman, and Catherynne M. Valente! (also James Patterson but whatever)

Is there a list of GAFers' NaNo handles somewhere?
You bet! Nezumi put one together and it's right here.

Does my story have to be an original work of genius?
No. It's whatever you want to write. So write a Harry Potter/Pinkie Pie slashfic that exactly recapitulates the events of Gravity to your heart's content.

Can I/Do I have to share a synopsis or excerpts?
You don't have to do anything in this thread except update your word count if you want to be on the leaderboard in the OP. But if you want to share any of your writing, or your plot, or your totally awesome characters, please do so! It adds to the fun.

Great thread Cyan. Looking forward to this year's, even though I failed miserably on the last two attempts and cursed the NaNoWriMo name, vowing to never enter one again, lol.

This time around, no planning - I'm just gonna start writing and see if I can keep the story going till I hit 50k.

I'd love to take part this year but I got projects to work on that's eating any remaining time. And helping my friend out with his own book as well. (which should be getting released anytime really)

Oh god it's getting really close, isn't it? I have another project i'm deep in and I don't know if I'll be feeling up for another 50,000 this year but we'll see.

I really, really wanted to try last year but didn't because I knew I wouldn't have the time. After writing a short story (around ~1k words) a month ago, and a string of daily essays/blog posts over July, I feel like I have a better idea of what to expect and how to manage my time. So I'm going to participate this year.

I'm seriously thinking about it this year. I tried it in 2010 and made it about 30k words but quit. This year, I'm not going anywhere for Thanksgiving, so I have no excuse.

I still like my original idea from 2010 and I'm not feeling terribly creative, so maybe I'll start where I left off and see if I can write 50k more words.

Have any of you participated in the in-person events in your area? I live in the Seattle area and I've heard there's quite a few here and they're pretty popular. Just wondering if people found them helpful.

Very much so! I've been to one or two kick-off nights to start off the month, which are quite fun, and a decent number of write-ins. It varies depending on the crowd and where you're meeting, but the atmosphere is generally both fun and helpful in getting your writing done. It gives you a chance to commiserate and/or talk about your story, as well as a little peer pressure to get a lot of words down.

I might be back on board this year after missing last year, finishing in 2011 was a nice feeling. Still time to brainstorm...

I've only done this once and got to like 15,000 before stopping. Still the most I've written in one go.

I think what I'm going to do for this time around is stick to writing a bunch of short stories so I don't get discouraged with a huge project I don't know where to take. I don't know if that's allowed, but it'll be a personal goal at least. :)

Will be writing in Dutch though.

Not a problem. We might have trouble reading any excerpts you post, though. ;)

Mos def! Plenty of people do that.

I have some stories I want to pursue in other formats, but because I'm focused on another project (a web series) I'm super creatively-constipated (using the term in the opposite of how it's normally used) so I'm hoping I can put the stories into novel/novella form for this, and then maybe revisit it in other mediums down the road.

Hey, I am not doing it this year, (went back to school this semester in addition to working) but I wanted to hop in here and wish everyone who is doing it good luck!

I've had an idea for something I've wanted to write for ages, now may be the time.

Basically, a few years back.I ran a tabletop RPG in a mash-up universe with some original characters and some well-known characters. I want to go back to that world. It's five years in the future, and unlike most superhero comics, time has moved on. Teams have formed and broken up, people have gotten married (and maybe even had children!), there's been deaths, there's a new generation rising.

And then, I want to blow it up. A truly final battle, that starts when the world's governments demand that the world's greatest superheroes stand trial for causing a disaster. And when all seems lost a desperate struggle against an overwhelming foe from beyond this universe. An enemy that may truly be unbeatable, and the consequences that occur when the heroes can't save the day. I also really want to do the ASOIAF method of different characters narrating different chapters.

We'll see. I have quite a bit on my plate, but I have the first week of the month off.

I need to do this. Every year I say I will but never get past the first couple of days because of lack of planning.
Same here. Maybe if planning a novel is too intimidating, smaller stories will help? In the end it still comes out to a bunch of planning, but I don't know, in my mind it sounds less scary. D:

Definitely in again for this year. Got my idea picked out and everything. Not too enthused with the NaNo fanfare (not a fan of Rothfuss or Grossman or Patterson) but the GAF thread is where I participate the most anyway.

This almost killed me last year. I can't remember how long I had but I switched my book right at the end and wrote it in two weeks or something stupid like that.

This time should be much easier.

Should be.

I went this angle last year, it worked really well.

This year if I do try I'll be going back to the fuller novel format. But it's still a maybe, Cyan.

Those emails are so very annoying.

:D

Awww. Well, you can always just ignore them. I think my favorite one ever was from Neil Gaiman, where he talked about how there's a certain point in his books where he always starts to hate them and decide he's lost whatever writing talent he might've once had.

Fantastic! I was just thinking this morning "Oh, it's October... I wonder when Cyan is putting up the nano thread..." AND HERE IT IS! =)

I'm in for a 4th year in a row. I can't let my streak break now. I also have some vacation time I need to take. WORDS WORDS WORDS!

This year, finally, science fiction. Have an idea already brewing for it. Not going to change my mind seven times like I did last year.

I'm in again this year. Tentative idea is to write a sequel to last year's story with one of the supporting characters I fell in love with. But then, I've got at least 3 other ideas crying for attention so we'll see. May also have talked my wife into it this year.

I didn't make it 3 days last year, but it was better than the 1 day in 2011. Here's to hoping for 5 days!

In again, for better or for worse.

I haven't done any writing in a while...I need to get back on that...so I might be up for this. Would be nice if I could beat my record of beating it by the 13th of November.

Did you prepare outlines for each story beforehand or just kind of winged it during the month?

I had outlines ahead of time for each of the 6 shorts with varying amounts of detail. Some were only a few sentences, others had enough work put into them that they had character sheets. In one case I had compressed an entire story into a 4 paragraph summery, pasted each paragraph into Scrivener and then re-wrote it til it became about 8,000 words long.

It was really fun, allowed me to experiment with different approaches for each short and kept my momentum rolling faster than I think I've ever written. Different stuff works for different people so your mileage may vary but it worked for me.

Please put my name down, it is great fun.

When people sign up, feel free to add me as a "writing buddy" or whatever it is on the site:

I'm not really sure what I'm doing yet. I've got three main ideas, but I'm not in love with the idea of writing them just yet. I'd say that will change (hopefully) in the next week or so. I can't see myself doing the 10 day thing this time... will be spacing it out and going for a bit more quality.

Good luck to all those going in it.
