Media Create Sales: Week 48, 2013 (Nov 25 - Dec 01)

Exactly, which is why it is such an appealing platform for third parties. You only have to compare sales of games like Sen no Kiseki (PSV vs PS3), God Eater 2 (PSV vs PSP) to see that the Vita is, in fact, alive and viable. Dismissing the Vita as a dead platform at this point is ridiculous. It's just getting started.

This is really where Nintendo's stance on third parties becomes apparent. It's not a difficult task for developers to prepare a game for Wii U in addition to their PS3 and Xbox 360 builds. But aside from the few games at launch, we haven't seen much desire from third parties to do this.

As I said, the difference in third party support between Vita and Wii U is astounding. Vita already has good third party support. This will likely continue until one of two things happens: 1) its successor appears 2) PS4->PSV ports become difficult after PS3/PSP are no longer in the picture. For the latter, Vita will likely be a viable platform on its own at that point, without relying on ports. Meanwhile, Wii U has very little third party support, and its first party support is not making enough waves for the public to buy the hardware in droves. Arguably, Nintendo needs to step up the pace of their big releases, while at the same time making the hardware itself more appealing, either through a price drop, or a different SKU.

I think viable is a subjective term.... the Vita's 3rd party software sales is definitely healthier than the Wii U's nonexistent one. Since Nintendo ended up working on getting making a framework to port iOS games to the Wii U, do you think they have anything to show of it apart from Wonder Flick?

In this scenario the Wiiu is already rotting in a coffin.

....Vita vs Wii U debates are painful.
They're both dead. One's dead everywhere but Japan (where it's on life support) and one's dead everywhere but America (where it's in a coma.)

That much money for story-based content? What a horrible strategy on the part of the developer.

Those kind of tactics deserve large amounts of backlash.

No, it's not really about "story based content". The thing is, this SRW game is not a strategy rpg. It's a shitty 3D action game which no one asked for and no one wants. But if you buy the limited edition package, it comes with a digital download code for an SRW OG expansion scenario (an actual SRPG).

For fans who are not interested in the action game at all, they'll have to wait until early 2014 for that expansion to be released on PSN for sale.

When both parties accept that their favourite console is a failure? I doubt it. There'll be people on both sides still insisting things will look up.
People will be too busy arguing about the ps4.
I think it's obvious things can only improve in the most minuscule amount here on out for vita/wiiu any way.

Those kind of tactics deserve large amounts of backlash.

To a little more precise:
- Last year, Super Robot Wars OG 2nd came out on PS3, it was a long-awaited follow-up and a classic tactical game;
- A certain part of the story was left unaccounted for and Namco-Bandai eventually decided to release it as a standalone chapter that mechanically plays the same as OG 2nd;
- You can't buy said chapter until "sometime in spring", unless you buy the limited edition of the shitty action battle game they just pulled out.

So yeah, the only people who bought this game (Infinite Battle) either are braindead fans of the series and/or did it for the standalone chapter. And of course, used copies of said limited edition that are missing the DLC code are popping out everywhere ahah.

I took the photos today at 12:00 in the morning. I was surprised seeing DQX for Wii U sold out at that time. Maybe just is in this shop, or maybe, after all the Wii U bombas, shops just ordered a few copies. We'll check the sell-through tomorrow.

Those Vita/WiiU comparisons. Never count Nintendo out. Vita has no chance of becoming big. Wii U still has a chance do to decently because of Nintendo franchises. And they can create a hit out of nowhere. Sony Japan Studios on the other hand...

lots of mid-sized 3DS releases. Wonder how Gaist Crusher will do and how Inazuma Eleven will compare to the previous entries.

It's pretty clear that Wii was anomaly on the Nintendo way to irrelevance on home console market.

If Wii U reaches Gamecube levels I'll call that decent. Vita has no chance to even reach that level. Since we are here to make predictions, I think a Nintendo home console will never sell below Gamecube levels globally at the end of the generation.

You would be the only one

Vita has no chance to even reach that level.

Globally probably not, Japan id say it will, its halfway there now.

Since we are here to make predictions, I think a Nintendo home console will never sell below Gamecube levels globally at the end of the generation.

The WiiU will sell less than gamecube globally, its too far gone everywhere except Japan to match those numbers and japan is by no means looking likely either.

If Nintendo was making anything that could be called disruptive we would be talking about it as something that could be a game changer but as it stands no such game exists. Their current slot of Mario franchise games sell to a fanbase which already bought the system and have done little to sell new hardware beyond the system launch last year (The majority of all sales from the entire 52 week's it's been available in Japan occurred in the first 4 weeks).

Selling on par with Gc is by no stretch of the imagination decent. Even Nintendo recognises how awful that is.

Neither have any chance of becoming 'big'. I'd have thought that was clear by now.

We'll still be discussing which was the bigger failure in ten years time.

Which system will sell better during the holidays? Vita or WiiU?
Oooh, now there's an interesting question.

I disagree. Pretty sure a lot of old fans were waiting for more games. Mario games sell more than that usually. The WiiU library is starting to build up quite nicely. I think it'll have good December sales. In the US too. The system is still only 1 year old and had no must haves until recently. Still too early to be definitive about a Nintendo console.

For sure the Vita, VitaTV will hold the Vita above 20k and some new Bundels + FFX HD will resolve the rest.

I think in early January Vita will be back again at sub 20k.

WiiU, hmmmm.....lol. There will be only a peak with Mario Kart, but this for sure will be bigger than any Vita Game in the first 6 Months.

Are there any heavy hitters announced for Vita in 2014 for Japan? I didn´t speak about the Monster Hunter Clones, the only big one is already released.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I actually think Wii U will do slightly better this holiday. But only because Nintendo + holidays = success, usually.

edit: Oh, forgot about FFX HD, maybe Vita will take it narrowly then

Probably Vita but not by much, WiiU seems to have better early bump but vita has games coming out in the next couple of weeks as wells as bundles.

Yeah that's what makes it interesting to me. Vita has the software and bundles to really take off this holiday but WiiU has the new bundles and Mario games that generally benefit from this period of sales.

Phantasy Star Nova as a series should be on a similar level to GE and its vita exclusive.

As far as non MH games go there is Sword Art Online which should do decently but most of the other bigger games are multi with ps3. Samurai Warriors 4, J stars and miku are all out by mid march.

Project Diva f 2 - previous version 200k on Vita
Sword Art game - previous version 200k on PSP
SS Delta - basic version reached 200k
Phantasy Star Nova - those games used to sell 500k on PSP
Persona D- both Miku and P4G are 200k on Vita so this should at least do 100k
Freedom Wars - new IP with aspirations to at least match SS

plus hypothetical Toukiden/GE2 expansions as those usually come one year after release

Isn't that Sword Art game an MH-like game though? At least that's the impression I get from Google.

its a single player action rpg.

big monsters has been s a thing for rpgs for 30+ years and wasn't invented by monster hunter

edit: apparently it does have a multiplayer mode oops

I honestly think the situation is the other way around. Vita, in Japan at the very least, has a decent chance of being... well, decent, while the WiiU... I am just not that optimistic.

Yeah I won't lie that kinda urks me, Monster Hunter isn't a genre and calling everything a clone carries a negative connotation with it.

Vita will outsell WiiU this holiday. Didn't it just post an 80k number two weeks ago. Thats like 4 weeks of WiiU sales.

That's including the Vita tv launch..and it's hard to say if that's expanding the userbase at all ..

...or if it's essentially just being bought as an HDMI out by current Vita owners. I personally believe it's primary audience at present is people who already own a Vita.

It would be interesting to see some stats in that regard.

What are we supposed to call them then? They are clearly different than your typical action RPGs so I think it's kinda misleading to label them as just action RPGs. I think it's fair to call them hunting games since the main premise of the games is to hunt/grind out big monsters.

Vita will certainly get more Japanese software support...even if Wii U does start to do better. That's what will likely help Vita sales long term.

Sony do seem able to drum up software support for their platforms even when they are being trounced by the competition/selling poorly initially. Nintendo not so much.

It's certainly popular enough in Japan (and has enough imitators) to have its own genre.

Kind of like how GTA is its own genre.

No one reasonably expects Vita to be big. It is already "big enough" to get some interesting 3rd party games. Between those and FF X-2, I am happy enough with it.

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Dengeki?
Dengeki is a website (it's also a brand of magazines / a book and manga imprint) that publishes sell-through Japanese sales data tracked by Kadokawa ASCII Research Laboratories, Inc., a division of Kadokawa Corporation. Every week they publish a nationwide snapshot of Japanese video game sales with the cooperation of more than 3,000 specialty game stores and convenience store chains all across Japan.

Why post Dengeki numbers when you have Media Create / Famitsu in the OP?
1) Unlike any other tracker, Dengeki gives us software numbers for Top 50 sales so we can track low-performing titles for a longer period of time
2) Unlike the others, Dengeki gives us total software sales for every platform, so we can track the relative health of platform software ecosystems
3) Dengeki is a respected sales tracker with 5 consecutive years of being reported each week in GAF threads

Is Dengeki less accurate than Media Create / Famitsu?
1) Dengeki is just as accurate as Media Create and Famitsu. Just because each tracker has quirks and natural deviations from the others doesn't mean one is inherently superior to the rest.
2) Dengeki is the tracker most unfamiliar to GAF / the public, and sometimes people confuse lack of dissemination with inaccuracy in sales figures
3) The amount of retail stores Dengeki tracks is similar to Media Create and Famitsu

Here are the differences between the trackers:

Media Create:

+ Top 20 software sales with numbers
+ Top 50 software sales without numbers

+ Releases first (at the same time as Famitsu)
+ Nintendo uses these numbers in their investor presentations
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
+ Distinguishes between Vita and Vita TV
- Does not track download cards
- Does not provide software sales figures past the Top 20

Famitsu:

+ Top 30 software sales with numbers
