First Update:

Grendel - John Gardner

The main reason I bought this book was because I loved the Cover so much. The book itself was a bit erratic for my taste. There were some scenes that I thought were brilliant, while others dragged on too long for my taste. But I would definitly recommend it especially since it is a rather short read.

Looks like I'm going to need that third post available after all, with all the additional people signing up this year and us using a single URL link for each poster instead of incremental updates.

Can either Mumei or Cyan edit this in as the third post in the thread, please? I realize it will probably jack up all the links I have, but I'll just redo them. I can't fit a single other person into master list and will need to split it in two. Thanks in advance!

We've had one member notice his name dropped off the list...not intentionally, I promise. I also don't currently have room to add anyone new to the list, but I'll do so when I get the third post to split the two up. I'll get to you soon.

Oh, it's entirely possible. I had thirteen books (1181, 555, 482, 548, 684, 598, 2559, 457, 835, 1008, 925, 776, and 453 pages) over 450 pages last year, and The Lord of the Rings, which didn't count.

You have 12 months; it's okay to spend some time on some gigantic books. It doesn't really take long to knock out a 200 page novel, after all.

Mumei. You are a reading deity. Us normal folks can't hope to match up with you.

I finished this before midnight but thought I would recommend it:

The Reason I Jump

A book about autism. Really really interesting. Some repetitive parts but definitely worth a read.

I found that book both fascinating and totally eye-opening. My son is three and high-functioning ASD. I know every kid on the spectrum is different, but reading that made me feel like I understood some of his behaviors and actions for the first time. The best part is the ultimate message, which is to never give up on someone with autism or lose hope in their future.

-----

Thanks to both Cyan and Mumei for the extra post and not even breaking my links in the process. You two rock. If you've posted in this thread, you should now be able to find your name in the second and third post of the thread with a link to your master list. That will make it easier for you to find your location as this thread grows and will make my monthly updating easier.

If there's a problem with your link or you don't see your name, give me a holler. Right now they're alphabetical but will be be in order of your book + movie total in the future.

It's 1am in Germany and I've just finished reading V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. Even though I absolutely love Natalie Portman, I think I enjoyed the Graphic Novel quite a bit more than the movie. Fun read! Not sure what I'm going to read next. It's probably either going to be The World Without Us by Alan Weisman which inspired the environmental design of The Last of Us, The Casual Vacancy by JKR or the GAF Book Club book: The Quiet American by Graham Greene.

Anyway, my updated master list:

Always looking for a new excuse to read more, though I doubt I'll reach 50. The movies should be easy enough.

Saw The Wolf of Wall Street at the Alamo Drafthouse today. Really enjoyed it. Gave it 4 stars on my list.

I'm a fan of Scorsese and DiCaprio, so I figured I'd like it. It's a long movie, clocking in at exactly 3 hours. But again, if you are a fan of Scorsese, you know what you're getting into.

I'm also a fan of Terence Winter, creater/writer of Boardwalk Empire (which Scorsese is an EP), who wrote the screenplay based on the real life Jordan Belfort's memoirs (which I did not know about until after watching the movie).

Overall, it is a good movie, but don't take grandma to go see it.

I'm surprised how divisive this film has become. On Fandango, the critics liked it, but so many 'normal folks' hate it. I plan to see it sometime this weekend during a morning showing.

It was quite raunchy. I suppose you have to be OK with that, and a lot of folks aren't. After seeing it, what you said doesn't surprise me.

No story spoilers, but raunchiness description:
very foul language, lots of boobs and drugs, and even a penis or two

Yep, divisive is one word that movie screams.

Finished the last (we'll find out in nine years, I suppose) of the Before... series today as my first movie of the year.

I loved Midnight as much as the first two, which I finally got around to watching last week, despite its differences. Incredibly well written and performed.

Just finished my first book of 2014! It was the dog stars by Peter Heller, and even though its a post apocalyptical novel, it feels nothing like one.

Its really unique and filled with moments of effusive joy, sadness and profound observations from the narrator. Highly recommended!

I'm in. Don't know if I reach the 50 books as I finished last year just 2. And both for the school. So, we'll see.

That challenge sounds like a nice motivator to read more. It's a good thing I bought a lot of books recently. Also, I am not even sure I watched 50 movies in a year. It will be interesting to track it all.

One down, 99 to go!

Watched my first movie of the year, The Lady Vanishes. The plot is a hoary one by now (a woman takes a blow to the head while boarding a train; when she wakes up on board, an older woman who had befriended her has vanished, and none of the other passengers seem to remember the older woman ever being on the train), but this movie holds up surprising well. (It's 75 years old!) Hitchcock doesn't give short shrift to the thriller aspect of the movie, but also gives it a surprising number of comic bits. Which are still damn funny (those goddamn Englishmen...).

Saw:

Saving Mr. Banks today. I enjoyed it. There were some cornball moments, but having not known the general tale of Mary Poppins' journey to the bigscreen....it was interesting.

Del Toro - Cronos
You really can see Del Toro in it. It's rough, but beautiful. It has a clear three part structure, and despite knowing the ending the entire movie was enjoyable. I definitely recommend it to people who like Del Toro's more popular (I'm not sure if this is popular....) films.

Watched Moonrise Kingdom, a movie I had sort of set aside for a special occasion. What better occasion than a new year? I am genetically inclined to love Wes Anderson movies and this is no different. Touching, awkward, Bill Murrayism, all the hallmarks of Anderson's best are here.

As much as I love WA, the Grand Budapest Hotel coming out soon is rubbing me a little raw.

Moonrise Kingdom seemed fine to me as it felt like a paintbrush of my father's youth and the craziness of boy scouts in the 50s-late 60s.

Then again, who cares when he makes some of the most touching characters on screen.

Grand Budapest Hotel is my most anticipated of the year. It's definitely going to end up on this list. I have enjoyed every one of his films and, yeah, it can be well argued that his films centered on adults have generally been slightly weaker than his ones dealing with the problems of youth, I don't think he's made a bad film yet. I even like Bottle Rocket quite a bit.

The only two that I find somewhat questionable are Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Limited.

LA, though the soundtrack is amazing, just seems a wee bit too far up his own bungholio.

DL, I just haven't seen in a while...but I was disappointed when I saw it in theaters. I should really give it a rewatch before passing judgement.

Call it a 'semi-cautious' massive anticipation for it. A guarded hype-beast that is only minutely controlled to prevent a massive letdown if the movie turns out to be what I would consider a worst-case scenario.

BR, Rushmore, Tenenbaums trio define my youth and have shaped me in ways I probably can't fully comprehend.

It's been on my Goodreads queue forever. I really need to read it. Thanks for the feedback.

Its actually quite amazing how levity is simultaneously leveraged with the gravity and overall heaviness that such a world necessitates.

Like I'd be laughing one second and extremely sad the next, and it somehow all works.

OT: I just watched Wolf Children based off of its constant mentions in the Anime of the year thread.

Of all the things I expected, a well executed narrative on the troubles of single motherhood was not one of them, and it was amazing in that respect.

It didn't quite reach the highs that I felt it needed to be top tier, but I was admittedly beaming for most of its screen time. So in that sphere of critique it gets an A.

Started the year off with a couple of quick, easy pulp reads from Hard Case Crime.
Plan to read The Last Quarry and then hop into Leviathan Wakes or A Dance with Dragons.

01. The First Quarry - Max Allan Collins
02. Quarry's Ex - Max Allan Collins

My first movie of 2014 was a Wes Anderson movie. Rushmore! Really enjoyed it.

Rushmore is one of the greatest movies of all times. Every movie that Wes Anderson even has a finger in, or Jason Schwartzman is in I have to see because of Rushmore.

Just finished my first book of 2014, I took the easy way out and read Dan Browns Inferno. I feel dirty doing it but it was quite the fun read and I recommend it to anyone that wants to read something light, easy, and not taxing to the mind yet still looking for a page turner.

Kicked in the New Year with two Robert De Niro movies, both drastically different, Silver Linings Playbook witch I enjoyed and the Killing Season. The later really was an interesting movie as the location they shot in was breathtaking but the actual acting left a lot to be desired.

Best of luck to all of you and I hope that everyone reaches the 50/50 goal for the year.

I've nearly finished Triplanetary by EE "Doc" Smith (1934) and found it surprisingly enjoyable. Seeing the type of future-gazing that happened in the 1930's is hilarious in some instances and startlingly accurate in others.

Has anyone got recommendations for other good "pulpy" sci-fi?

First Update - Books 0/50, Movies 3/50

Watched the last part of Sherlock S1 and the first two parts of S2 last night. Man, I'm glad that I didn't have to wait the 2 years between them. In any case, these were as fantastic as expected.

For books, I'm going to start with a couple non-fictions that I'd picked up a while back and barely got into before setting them aside for various reasons. So far, Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN is keeping me pretty interested.

The only two that I find somewhat questionable are Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Limited.

I saw The Life Aquatic in the dollar theater back in the day and was thinking, "What the heck is this crap?" Watching it again later on blu ray made me fully realize how freaking fun and awesome the movie is. The Darjeeling Limited, however, really is a stinker. I think it stands out against the rest of his films like a sore thumb. I just could not get interested in the characters or story. It pales in comparison to Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Its actually quite amazing how levity is simultaneously leveraged with the gravity and overall heaviness that such a world necessitates.

Yeah, the entire premise of The Dog Stars just screams, "Hey, Tragicomedy, this is right up your alley!" I think I've been hesitant to read it because several folks in the monthly reading thread said the writing style was haphazard, and a little atypical. That shouldn't really bother me, though. I love McCarthy's stuff, and that comes without proper punctuation or use of quotation marks. It gives it a free, breezy feeling that I really appreciate.

I saw Jurassic Park last night but I'm not sure if I've actually seen it ....

I saw it in theaters back in 1993, so maybe I'm coloring this view with my nostalgia...but how the heck could you ever forget seeing that film??? It might not compare to some modern day computer graphics, but that film completely altered the way I perceived technology in movies like none before it. I think the progress since then has been amazing but largely iterative, as opposed to the massive gap between Jurassic Park and everything that came before it.

Great minds think alike. The wife and I started the series for the first time. Two parts in to the first season and it's been wonderful so far. I have no idea why I haven't sat down and watched it prior to now.

Well, I was two years old when it released in theaters so...

It's one of those movies that has been so ingrained in pop culture that it basically felt like I've seen it before, even though I'm not sure if I did. Certain shots, the soundtrack are very memorable.
