Wow...November killed me. Yeah there was absolutely zero chance I was going to go positive this year but this past month was the most damaging to my progress so far. Several bundles + Steam sale + Thanksgiving = Big backlog.

Splice (11/1) - Ugh. I can't completely dislike this one as it really has some nice elements to it but overall I didn't really enjoy the game. While I liked the minimalist style, it was a bit too minimal. I could have done with some brief instructions at times explaining some of the core mechanics.

Gears of War 3 (11/13) - It's Gears. I enjoyed it but there's nothing else for me to say.

Super Metroid (Wii U Virtual Console) - That's right motherfuckers. I finally sat down, seriously played, and ultimately finished this son of a bitch. I'm equally amazed that I never made time for it as a kid, and by just how much this game holds up today. I want to play it again and again forever.

Currently Playing:

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Steam) - 35% through I think. Usually at this point in a new AC I'll drop all the side stuff and start plowing through story missions because I'm curious how it plays out, but this time I just can't. I literally am enjoying every side activity so much that they trump the overarching narrative for me, even though I find it more interesting than usual this time around. I can't say the game is flawless but I could run out of breath praising it. I don't know how they'll top the fun factor with future iterations.

Played through most of Mario while driving down to FL. When I got back on Sunday the games I bought on Black Friday were waiting for me. I'm kind of irked that I went over 3 purchases but the prices were solid.

Dead Space 3 is next. It's winter so the snow theme is fitting plus I have a feeling I'll like it less if I play it after TLOU, so we'll save that one for later. I also picked up a regular copy of Borderlands 2 for $15 so my wife and I can play co-op; we have 2 360's and we'll just share the DLC disc between the consoles. She's early in Persona 4 right now though so I should be able to play a bunch of my games before she's finished it.

I gave up updating my list a while back and I'm probably high-single-digits to low-double-digits into negative territory. I kinda gave up on clearing my backlog a while back as I haven't been gaming much. At this point I'm just playing whatever I'm in the mood for, and it seems to be working for me.

Dead Space 3 is beat. I actually really liked this one but I do have some complaints. Should have been 30% shorter, I encountered a few bugs, and I think in 3 sections it was very unclear what you had to do. I'm not sure if I want to play the Awakened DLC since HLTB has it listed at 1 hour and it's $10. I'll probably just read about it. Oh, also the complaints about the microtransactions are blown way out of proportion. I didn't even notice it until I googled to see if they removed them. I was able to ignore and beat the game just fine without them.

I've also been playing Mario 3D Land still. I wasn't planning on trying to unlock the secret last stage but the 3DS makes it so easy to play a level or two when I have 5 min randomly. I'm not sure what game I'm playing next, probably The Wolf Among Us chapter 1 and then Anarchy Reigns single player.

I know I messed up my list quite a bit (since I didn't start at 0) and I'm thinking about changing how I handle the 100+ hour games and the collection games (like the two Sonic Collection games that I've already made a large dent in, Gradius Collection, and the YDKJ titles that I have).

The 100+ change might add more confusion though, but I have some games that I'm probably going to play for 250 or more hours to go along with some games that won't even break 10 hours.

If it helps, should we count the score starting at 0 from September or just disqualify it and let it stay for keeping track of things?

I also beat The Wolf Among Us episode 1 and The Walking Dead: Season 2: Episode 1, but I decided not to count those as full games. The argument could be made but I feel cheap adding them as 5 full games each once it's all over so I guess I'll count them all as 1 each total or not at all. The Last of Us is next but I doubt I'll have it finished before 2014 so this is probably my final update for the year. Not sure if I'll be posting in the 2014 thread since I cleared my backlog and am in single digits, wouldn't feel right.

Looks like I'm punting on this year. More games bought via Steam sale. Have only finished NSMBU since my last update.

Make no mistake, NSMBU is a great game. It doesn't do much to mix up what has become a well-worn formula, but I'd say it's the best of the NSMB games. (Though I have admittedly still not finished the Wii game.)

Playing this directly after 3D World really served to highlight the differences in design between the two. NSMBU is a lot harder than 3D World. Being able to simply walk around most enemies in 3D world serves to make them largely meaningless, while some especially devious enemy placements in NSMBU really test you in various ways.

The game is really held back by a lot of bad interface choices, however, which serve to add a level of frustration to each attempt at a tricky section. It seems that the designers are married to a lot of things due to tradition which make the game worse overall. There's nothing so bad that it ruins the experience, but it definitely knocks it down a peg.

I don't see why we wouldn't do it again next year. Progress resets on Wednesday, so save a couple you've almost finished and start 2014 off with a bang!

I just finished my last game of 2013. I will end with a total of 0, so i'm not complaining. I didn't play much of my steam backlog (like i had planned at the beginning of the year), but i expect to change that next year. And i beat 18 ps+ games.

Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers - by far my biggest highlight of the year. I took me maybe 3-3.5 hours to beat but after that just out of curiosity I started fucking around with the levels and found tons of stuff I didn't even know was there the first time through. Music is absolutely amazing even on it's own but it also fits with the theme of the game. If anyone has it in their backlog I say get to it.

Lol, December exploded. :( I didn't plan to rebuy the PSP games (marked with *), but couldn't pass on them since the titles were on sale and the thought of being able to play on the Vita TV. Also rebought some RPGs for my Nexus 7, since my 2nd iPod Touch is getting kind of...old. I had a decent start in the beginning of last year, but my overall score dropped pretty fast when I found a job. Been that way ever since. HOPEFULLY this year will be a tad better...hopefully.

Alright, final update time. Score for the year = 0. Better than last year, but I was really hoping to end in the positive. However, looking back, that's a shitload of games I got through, and I'm really hoping to get to the positive next year (and actually, I would be in the negative this year if I counted presents or gifts as a negative, but I don't since I also use this to track spending).

Welp! I finished with over 100 in the negatives. But! I also beat a lot more games than I did last year. Also interesting to note, out of the 44 games I beat this year, only 11 of them weren't on Nintendo systems. 6 were on PC, 3 were on Xbox 360, and 2 were on Genesis. I do own a PS3 and PSP. I guess I just didn't beat a single game for either of those systems this year :O

Dark Souls killed any momentum I had. Nothing really fit the bill after that - in fact, I didn't beat a game from the backlog for nearly 3 months after. This is the first year since 2009 when I started tracking my backlog that I ended up with a net gain...probably because I stopped caring after the missus and I merged our collections and my backlog technically grew from about 270 to over 1000. Also started participating in Steam sales after fixing my PC. I was tracking okay until the clearance sales in November.

Final Fantasy VIII (Steam) - My favorite in the series. Just finished the opening mission in Dollet and am refusing to go back to Balamb Garden until Zell's mom gives up his friggin' card.
Mega Man X (Wii U VC) - The only X game I've ever touched. Nabbed it during the 2 day discount.
The Walking Dead: Season One (PS Vita) - Came free with the PS Vita bundle. Probably won't make time for it since I'm playing this series on Steam.
Retro City Rampage (PS Vita) - Came free with the PS Vita bundle. Didn't care for the game on Steam so I'll probably avoid this.
Hotline Miami (PS Vita) - I was surprised to see this so cheap, it was barely over a buck. Plays pretty well on the Vita so I might not go back to the Steam version.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS) - Beat this during a rental a while back.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Steam) - I couldn't put it down until I was done, and I couldn't stop myself from doing damn near everything.

Currently Playing:

Super Mario 3D World (Steam) - Actually my son's been playing it a lot. He got to the last world and needed some help, and when we got to the final castle we realized he needed another 70 or so green stars to open it up. So I've been going back through a bunch of levels to get them. Almost there.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss (PS Vita) - Up to Chapter 7. I'm kinda liking it so far. No idea what all this card game business related to the treasures and mystery stuff is though.
Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita) - I'm at the boss just before saving Yukiko. I love this game and the new additions to fusion and shuffle time are great, but fuck that boss.
Miscellaney of PS Plus and Free-to-Play (PS4 and PS Vita) - Yep, I got myself a PS4 when they were back in stock at Amazon a couple of weeks ago, and the wife got me a Vita for Christmas, specifically the Amazon bundle that came with a bunch of stuff. I immediately got PS Plus and am staggered by how much is freely available. I hope to get to Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice, and Wipeout very soon. For now though I'm busy with free stuff on PS4 such as Resogun, Warframe, DC Universe, Flower, and Contrast. I also rented Knack but sent it back after a few hours. That game is just bad. Another bummer is dealing with a PS4 trophy sync issue that started last night. I unlocked like 7 trophies in Resogun and now I may have to employ some workarounds that require I get them again. Ugh. Anyway, I'm hoping that gamefly will send me Battlefield 4, Killzone, and Tearaway soon. Lots to do when you suddenly get two new platforms.
