Week of April 27th to May 3rd, 2015.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well. If you are looking to see what events are coming up past this week, check out the FGC Event Calendar that our own Malice215 put together.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Last year, GAFer Shouta helped organize donations from various FGC-GAF members to send fellow member QisTopTier to EVO. Q suffers from Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, but has always wanted to go to EVO and we're looking to double up this year and send him to EVO again!

If you want to help out, you can check out the details and pledge on this spreadsheet.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at favourite tester, Osu 16 Bit!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
The only game I currently play is Mortal Kombat X. Since the game just came out and we're still working on DLC I've been super busy and don't have time for other games. But even when I'm not busy I generally only play my main tournament game. I will try almost any fighting game out at a casual level just to see what's up but for the past two years outside entering MK9 at majors I only played Injustice. I will say though that even if I don't play a game I will watch it. I follow the SF4 scene fairly regularly, especially the majors. I enjoy the Capcom Cup drama.

My favorite game of all time is probably Mortal Kombat 9. It's corny but that game completely changed my life. My friends, where I live, my job, it's all tied to MK9.

Outside NRS games my favorite game is Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection. I think that game is the peak for Tekken.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
My favorite mechanic is obviously the variation system in Mortal Kombat X :)

I didn't care for Rage in Tekken. I don't mind comeback mechanics as a rule but this one was uninspired. I haven't followed T7 enough to know if the Rage Arts thing is better.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I've been playing them since World Warrior and MK1. I played everything, even like Double Dragon V and B.I.O. Freaks. In 2005 I started playing Tekken 5 arcade seriously at my local Aladdin's Castle. I was going there 4-5 days a week to play. I was destroying everyone and wanted to level up and see how I'd do against good players. I had always read about the tournament scene and had been watching tournament footage for years but never actually participated. So I started traveling to St. Louis to play with those guys in Tekken. I got bodied. It was great. I was quickly hooked on the grind and started driving 3 hours to play with them as much as I could. I started going to majors, including EVO, and played Tekken as my primary game until MK9 came out. From there I've been a NRS specialist.

I also a lot of single player games. I play open world games, cover based shooters, and western RPGs. Fighters are the only multi player games I play.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Kitana. In MK II Kitana was my favorite since female ninjas are awesome and she was blue. She had high damage, easy juggle combos and could beat Kintaro and Shao Kahn. I'm also partial to Catwoman in Injustice. I'm a fan of Catwoman as a character in other media(her solo book is really good right now!) and her Injustice appearance was awesome. Of course both these characters mean a lot to me because of my success with them too.

Outside NRS games I like Rose in SF, Lili in Tekken(I might try Katarina when I play 7), and Xianghua in SC.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
My most comfortable style of play is long range footsies, with some zoning. However to make Catwoman work in Injustice I had to rush down and although it was a struggle I ended up enjoying it. Now in MKX I'm back to zoning since I think that's what Kitana excels at.

I play locally at Galloping Ghost Arcade in Chicago. We have an amazing scene, easily one of the top scenes for NRS games. At our peak we play like 3-4 days a week and we have a local every Thursday. We just started up MKX, so if you want to check it out the link is in this thread in the stream section. Our scene is so good because we have a team mentality. Like last year when you were hearing about all the drama at NLBC and how they don't help each other, we're the opposite. Everyone trains together, shares information, people here will even pick up alt characters just to help.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is definitely my drive. I am hyper competitive, to an obsessive, honestly probably unhealthy degree. I have to win. So I work very hard and grind as much as I can to do it. At the same time, I'm a character specialist and only want to play the character I like. So I am in this weird situation where I can't stand losing but want to play Kitana/Catwoman, so I end up working very hard on matchups, which then makes me a much better player for it. In gameplay my biggest strength is probably my ability to play under pressure and my instincts for picking up on player weaknesses.

The worst moments are when my anger gets to me and I act like a dick, even to friends. I'm always salty when I lose but the past year it got real bad. I was so bitter and angry over playing a match up I hate I drove one of our players away until I smoothed things over. That was a wake up call and I tried working on it with limited success. It'd be nice of my passion for success didn't have the dark side but it's there.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best moment was placing top 8 at EVO 2011 in MK9. It came out of no where. My Tekken career was mediocre. I was becoming a decent player and could do ok against top guys but I had bad tournament nerves and wasn't at the level of placing even top 16 at majors. In the early days of MK9 I did very well in casuals against guys that were making top 8 but at my first two majors I didn't do well in the tournament. I was still playing shitty when it mattered. At EVO 2011 for some reason that faded and I delivered. I was super happy to win my pool and make top 64. Placing 5th was just crazy. In top 64 I even beat two of the great St. Louis Tekken players that had bodied me in that game.

Worst was being involved in the rigging scandal of NEC 2012. I am ashamed my drive to succeed and fear of failure made it too hard to pass up the opportunity to get an edge because I knew the guy doing seeding. I've done some dumb stuff when I'm salty but this was unacceptable.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I want to see next gen UI and presentation. Why are games still using the traditional character select, for example? I want a game's presentation to wow me, like Killer Instinct did in 1994. MKX is a good start. I hope SF5 has some cool stuff too.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
I can't keep track of who has done this already.
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?
I will buy every major FG release, except anime games because they're weird.

Part of me thinks I should try to play either Tekken 7 or SF V seriously. Just to prove to myself I could do well in another game. But logically I know I don't have time.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
For a list of NeoGAF OTs for specific fighting games, as well as a list of non-GAF fighting game communities that may be of interest, check out the FGW Archive where these resources can be found on separate sheets at the bottom.

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or (preferably) PM me to let me know.

Let me quote this shit real quick
datholdupplayy9ibe3.png

To Smug, Snake, Die, etc... Infiltration is going to Texas Showdown. If he wins that tournament, you're now left with 4 ranking events to get 128 points. If all of the top players in the US go to the remaining 4 events, what are the chances of you pulling off a 1st place finish or even two top 2 finishes? This is all assuming no other Asian players start attending the last 4 US ranking events.

Good luck getting into Capcom Cup.

What could be different with character selection? I love Smash's, but what else is there?

What you think Capcom can do to bring in casual crowd like MKX? I saw earlier some really bad player streaming MKX with 30k viewers. What can capcom do to overcome the casual hate (megaman cancellation, locked DLC)?

How did you come up with this premise? I don't get this in the context of SFIV still doing greater numbers or when SFV comes out.

Casual players have the short-term memory of a goldfish, so as long as a) they don't do anything scummy again with SFV, and b) they give the game some sort of wide appeal, they'll do fine.

Netcode that doesn't suck dick for starters.

The whole "bad players getting 30k" has less to do with the actual game and more to do with streaming personalities. For MKX that will go away after a while, that's just how it is.

All those suggestions and you picked that? For shame, Enzo. For shame.

Nice interview, 16-bit. Will Jason be top tier? Should I buy him to win?

What could be different with character selection? I love Smash's, but what else is there?

I guess he wants the character select/interface to be more pizzazz. The way the characters come from the shadow and so flashy stuff/taunt each other in MKX is nice.

What can capcom do to overcome the casual hate (megaman cancellation, locked DLC)?

I doubt the casuals care much about that stuff. MKX just managed to build a great hype train while providing enough content for the casuals to play their game, even if they have no intentions of playing competitive. I doubt many can Combo or even do spacial moves consistently.

Ya know, a game tried a different take on character select, and everyone hated it. But...it was also a shit fighting game.

Katsumi Ninja

Anyway, fighting games biggest problem right now is people would rather watch/read/think about fighting games than actually play them. NRS does a good job catering to both casual and hardcore. It's a real shame capcom drops the ball constantly.

that bad player is an extremely popular streamer. He can stream paint drying with commentary and people will watch him.

Lirik is one of the top streamers on Twitch, it's not about the game and more about the personality in this case

I meant what can Capcom do to bring in SFV to even more newer players. MKX is obviously watched by a lot of people. And i think out for 30k watching MKX maybe 1k will pick up the game to play seriously. I wonder what can Capcom do to promote interest among casuals. And maybe convert a few of them into good serious players.

Who is the best player on GAF that doesn't get to travel to a large tournament? Any game.

Unrelated, voting for DBJ in the player spotlight.

SFV is going to be Sony's exclusive baby. I'm sure they'll push it. The rest is up to Capcom to produce a good game that will appeal to both the hardcore and casuals. I'll admit, I enjoyed watching the MK story mode. I hope SFV has similar things in store.

Three things Capcom can do to bring in the casuals:

*Game play that is exciting to watch. None of this slow walk speed crap but the exaggerated CH effects and changed up blocking animations are good steps. And for god sakes no 1 frame links... ain't no one got time for that shit.

*Netcode that doesn't suck and a very good online infrastructure with fast MM and easy rematches.

*Good graphics of course. First impression is everything and if a game looks good it gets attention.

SFV will sell well and do well. Whether it starts creeping into e sports/MOBA/PC games territory then that is a whole different issue.

Honorable mention: PC version that doesn't suck dick.

Well alot of indie games have had success offering the games to Streamers/YT LPers and shit before release to get people hyped up.

It's basically free PR.

They can overcome hate by not doing so much stupid shit that people hate.

Otherwise:
1) Good netcode.
2) Hire pop streamers.
3) Maybe pay Maximillian to do something for promo.
4) Have a full SFV anime contained within a story mode (there was a SFIV anime - why not just give it to people in the game?).
5) Make doing cool stuff easy so people feel good.
6) Include multiple badasses. MK games have like 8 ninjas with the same recolored outfit and no one gives a crap because ninjas are badass and MK ninjas have badass powers like spitting acid, freezing people, and telekinesis. Basically, don't fill it with a bunch of generic Joe's in karate gis. How many badasses does SFIV even have? Like 5 in a cast of 50 or something.

The idea that SF[V] isn't popular [enough] around casuals doesn't make sense to me. MK and SF are both super appealing to casuals and numbers support that. I don't get what this 30k number means for anything, really.

We have this absolutely prehistoric game right now that is still gaining viewership numbers and updates are doing well enough and selling hundreds of thousands as well. MK fizzles quicker in viewership, and I don't think some day 14 or whatever it is hype on a Twitch service that's much bigger than it was when MK9 came out is anything to go off of.

Why shouldn't we expect SFV to be even bigger? Especially when the next gen install base is only going to grow and grow? Sure some of these guys are only streaming story mode because that's the only part of a fighting game they'll touch but the fact that a new goddamn SF is coming out will provide enough hysteria. It's only going to get crazier as SFV gets closer.

Any other folks from GAF attending KVO(KSB)? I'm in for marvel singles and teams
and I'm still salty Xrd filled up before I could get in T_T

My team has to fight RF's team right off the bat apparently, so it ain't gonna be easy, haha.

To just get a lot of casuals, make a great story mode, some mini game that involves timing shit to practice combo timing, great matchmaking to scrubs play scrubs, a tutorial that is more than just trials for combos, and promote the shit out of the game.

Want to convert casuals to the fgc? Have a mode where you travel to real tournaments playing cpu made up competitors along the way in game with the final stage being Capcom Cup Finals. That way you promote the Capcom Cup in general.

That's my best shot

Thank you so much!!!!

Seems like we'll have an issue with the air fares and flight restrictions and it looks like we'll have to go to miami and then get another flight to Las Vegas or take a bus... is there a travel guide to get to EVO somewhere? :(

If we're talking about those who play seriously, I doubt MKX will catch up to SFIV. There's a huge difference in number of copies sold and actual serious players. MK9 sold more than SFIV, but it wasn't as active as even SFIV:AE, the worst selling version of SFIV.

Ironically many of the bad asses in SF4 wear a gi.

Akuma
Gouken
Oni
Evil Ryu

Aside from that there's Guile, Cody, Fei Long, Guy, Sagat maybe Decapre..

SFV needs some characters in trenchcoats to increase its bad ass factor.
You need plain badasses (Dormammu, Oni), badass/douchebag hybrids (everyone with a trenchcoat, guys in their underwear), and then plain douchebags (Zero, Rufus) to complete the roster.

If they have another character that looks like Gill/urien/seth I'm gonna lose it.
The only thing cooler than a random guy in a karate gi is a random guy in underwear. Or a guy that has jiggle physics applied to his stomach.

Ironically many of the bad asses in SF4 wear a gi.

My badass list would also add:
C. Viper
Sagat
M. Bison

Dhalsim could almost be on the list, but then I see his long limbs get counterhit and it's gone.

I don't include E. Ryu, personally, since I consider him to have lost his way. So 6 badasses in the roster, 2/3 of which are shoto-esque.

I see some potential there...

Street Fighter character design has generally been really fantastic, and I think it's one of the key things that made it the top franchise in the genre, it's just SF4 character design that's been really awful.

Just stick to the "obvious but interesting" character design philosophy they had in the 90s, KOF and Tekken had a ton of "cool" characters but none of them had as much cultural relevance as even a dumb (but distinctive) character like Honda.

SFV should have a good, fleshed out story mode. I've never played MK besides vs. with my cousin in II and Deception years ago, but I was thoroughly entertained by the story mode in MKX.

ehhh

You talking shit about Urien?

igaA93QPDaiNg.gif
Is that the animation for him putting underwear on?

Guys in underpants will never be cool. Never. If Mike Ross mained a fully-clothed character his popularity would be ten times what it is now, and he would probably get at least 3rd place at a major.

Arnold begs to differ. He would dunk his balls on you bro.

Urien's music along with his "Kill" automatically makes him bad ass. The dude is basically a god.

There's a $200 ticket from miami to las vegas but it takes 2 days and 5 transfers to get there... the same when coming back...

Is that the animation for him putting underwear on?

Guys in underpants will never be cool. Never. If Mike Ross mained a fully-clothed character his popularity would be ten times what it is now, and he would probably get at least 3rd place at a major.
Nah Mike Ross would still be irrelevant even if he picked Evil Ryu.

Arnold begs to differ. He would dunk his balls on you bro.
Arnold is so godlike that he can survive the crutch that is wearing only underwear.

This is still Arnold at maximum awesome, though:

Notice two layers of clothing, plus shades. He would make a great Wesker.

How to make sf5 more popular: more hometown. You're welcome capcom, haunts pm me for billing info
Not life?

Just have Morrigan guest star.

There's a serious lack of Makoto in those badass lists.
I might add Decapre. Makoto isn't lame, but not a badass, either. She looks too much like a kid. She's somewhere between Sakura (lamest of the lame) and Juri (almost badass, but too annoying) in badassery.

anyone else having trouble loading the vods from NWM on twitch? Trying to watch today's MKX and USF4 finals but its not loading any vods.

Arnold would be bad ass butt naked, in a thong or full clothed. However his most bad ass form is in a leather jacket with shades on while riding a motorbike and reloading a shotgun single handedly.

You know who else is a bad ass? Wesley Snipes as Blade.

Having upper body naked but having full trousers is acceptable like Kazuya/Jin but wearing thongs and sandals like Heihachi is wack as fuck.

Again this isn't entirely my opinion but rather the casual interests.
