Fighting Games Weekly is a place for all things fighting games. News, game discussion, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related. Here are some quick links:

Last year, GAFer Shouta helped organize donations from various FGC-GAF members to send fellow member QisTopTier to EVO. Q suffers from Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, but has always wanted to go to EVO and we're looking to double up this year and send him to EVO again!

If you want to help out, you can check out the details and pledge on this spreadsheet.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at FSLink!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
I currently play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. My all time favorite is Super Street Fighter II Turbo due to its characters, gameplay, speed, aesthetics, and classic OST.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
Favorite is controversial, but X-Factor. It’s a dumb mechanic with clear balance issues, but dammit it’s fun.

Least favorite is Bursts. I’m not a fan of people getting out of combos when they got themselves into that bad situation, and I dislike that it breaks the pacing of the match. The baiting people into bursting early is interesting, but that’s about it. I think Skullgirls had it right though with its implementation where it prevented infinite combos.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I grew up with Street Fighter II: Turbo on the SNES, and my dad also had a SF2 cabinet in the garage. I grew much more interested in the competitive side when I saw the famous Justin Wong “Never give up” video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVmc5ZepdVs

I also caught up and enjoyed tons of fighting games on the PS2. I had the Darkstalkers collection, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, Capcom vs SNK 2, Melty Blood, Marvel vs Capcom 2…

I got my first fightstick around Tatsunoko vs Capcom’s release.

Aside from fighting games, I really enjoy JRPGs, not usually for the story since the majority is anime trope garbage, but mainly ones that have really cool battle systems or subsystems like Final Fantasy V or Tales of Destiny remake on PS2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_-jFgxlxZ0)

I also really enjoy rhythm games like Rhythm Heaven or Ouendan and puzzle games like Panel de Pon or Puyo Pop.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Dante in UMvC3. Just a perfect combination of being a great homage to the characters’ origin and having that show through gameplay. GET BACK!
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I prefer offline local play, but I do spend a lot of time in the training room and online. I’m not sure on my playstyle, but I tend to play cheap and lame as fuck. I do not mind timing people out or frustrating people with top tier characters, but at the same time I don’t mind bringing characters out like Phoenix Wright if I’m confident you do not understand the matchup. I suppose I just play to win.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I tend to not panic in bad situations, and I do like that in most fighting games that I’m good at I have a good grasp on the entire cast, I’m not afraid to choose a pocket character if I feel it’d help me in that particular matchup. But on the flip side, I think I can be a bit auto-pilot-y and predictable especially if I’m up a game.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Mostly local or online things for best moments. I usually can scrape to top 8 or better. Still working on trying to actually get #1. Not sure on worst moment, but I’ve definitely choked in locals when the odds were in my favor. Maybe not being able to go to EVO most years despite being from Vegas. Oh well, I’ll be there this year, so I’ll see the rest of you who are going there!
What do you want from future fighting games?
An in-game online hub where it’ll be easy to share techniques, combos, match videos, etc. So basically combine Miiverse with less restrictions, and more ability to share.

And rollback based netcode.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
RomanceDawn or JulianImp
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?
Street Fighter V, Pokken Tournament, Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, Fallout 4, Tales of Zestiria, Kingdom Hearts III, Fire Emblem Fates, The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes, StarFox Zero

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or (preferably) PM me to let me know.

LOL, a Smash Player that isn't against customs in this week's spotlight. We're been having a good run on that for like a month.

Also reposting this:

True or false, with 1028 CPT points, the EVO winner will be the 1st place seed at the Capcom Cup?

Edit: Random musings: I don't think MKX will be the semi-finals game at EVO this year. I'm going with Tekken 7 with the upset.

For Sunday, I'm imagining:

GG Xrd
Smash game
MKX
Tekken 7
Ultra.

Yo dat X-factor, let the Marvel haters salt the earth.

Reading the title at first...this again!? Then realizing the last two letters are an acronym this time:

posting this in hopes of breaking the fgw chain of batching about commentary

if it's that annoying just go to the damn event or mute it man...capcom has enough commentators and they all do their job/fulfill their roles fine. James probably puts in more work than anyone else on that end but its easy to miss that and throw shit at the screen when he makes a flat joke.

Anime commentary is what I'm most interested in seeing developed. there are some solid picks for sure but a lot of room for improvement and a lot of potential talent in that field

so this title won by one vote?
As far as I can tell:

USA WINS 1-1
phaonaut, directquote

Frauds Among US
biosnake, ViewtifulJC, BlackJace, directquote, Immortal, JuiceBoxFGC, Lostconfused, Panda

USA KazunoKO'd
pixelish, Unlucky

Last votes count (in the case of direct_quote). #transparency

Since there are so few events, what is the minimum points do you think someone would need to get within the top 32 for CapCup? What place does that correspond to in something like EVO, since iirc they said there would be more points there since it is much larger than any other major. Just curious since I wonder how easily the bottom rank would be overtaken for the last scramble drive for points.

Thought the commentary at CEO for Xrd was good, but the commentary for Persona 4 Ultimax was lacking.

For a guy who knows little about Xrd, and nothing about P4U, I away being way more interested in Xrd.

Well persona wasn't too too bad....I dislike Dacidbro but I admit he is good on the mic. my only issue with him is he over uses lines and can be kind of flat without someone else.

tasty Steve has always been underrated to me. I thought him and DaCid did well together

mentioned in last thread but VF is gonna be at Canada Cup '15, the 3rd major this year which ain't bad for a 10 year old dead game imo. plus there's NYGX in August which should be amazing.

never fucking liked democracy anyway, socialism is much wavier

If nobody else does, usually I tie break and I guess implicitly I did?

I think 128 points will be enough.

Evo gives out 1024, 512, 256, 128, 64, 64, 32, 32 for top 8.

There are 8 more Premier events after EVO. There are 2 in Europe, 3 more in Asia, 2 more in NA, and 1 in Kuwait and Brazil. Dreamhack Winter is one of them and it won't give out points, but will still have money so all the top players will go.

5 ranking events in NA left
4 ranking events in Europe left
8 ranking events in Asia left

Currently debating whether I should add all of these weeklies to OP or leave room for spotlights which every now and again get character constrained and are the only thing people actually read in the OP since everyone asks what's on anyways (IMO the weeklies section is pretty dead weight in OP).

What do y'all think?

get rid of it, the section under the banner is all that's needed for what to watch at any given moment

He's just taking it all to heart.

god... damn man. I always consider sanford a really good player but his emotions just gets in his way too much. Sometimes he can looks like the best player in USA but most of the times he just looks really bad... I don't know what can help Sanford get better but I just hope he doesn't lose his hunger, he really is one of my favorite players.

You lose, Tik-Tok, get off my property.

This is how I feel.

I feel like it's become some sort of ineffectual promo space that only gets me weird PMs from TOs asking me to promote their weekly. Ain't no way in hell anyone here is up at the crack of dawn to watch Game Spot Versus KoF Casuals... no offense. People don't even read the special events section, so I don't think anyones using the weeklies section at all. Probably wards people off as it contributes to the OP being long as fuck as well so why bother even skimming it?
