Want to make a few notes since it was more difficult to get this list compiled:

1) Though it was released in Japan, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was released the following year in NA and Europe, so I'm not including it in this list. It will show up when I do 1992! =)
2) Tried to get the big arcades of this year, and I think I got the heavy-hitters, but if there's one you loved that's not here, please list it so I can put it on the list.
3) As a whole, it's a lot harder to find something comprehensive the further back in time you go. There may very well be things missing from this list. Here's a Gamerankings list for anything you don't remember came out in 1991. Did my best on this one!

Enjoy! =)

Street Fighter II (Arcade). There was a cab at our local sports centre. Dad would take us there, yet was always disappointed that we went for the vidja games. :D Some of the best times of my life. Lemmings on Amiga kept me entertained @ home.

Find it hard to argue with Super Mario World, even with plenty of strong competition. My favourite 2D Mario by a long shot.

Honourable mention to F-Zero though - I'd never known a sense of speed like it in a game when I was growing up and it's still one of my favourite ever game soundtracks. Big Blue, man.

I was 1 1/2-2 years old at the time sooooooooo nothing. The game that resonated with me when I was older was Super Castlevania though.

road rash (genesis) and civilization, countless hour between those two.

Edit: wait, didnt realize this was sonic year, that one too

Your list really neglects the arcade titles. If we're going back this far, got to give arcade a fair crack.

Going by the OP list:

- Street Fighter II

- Battletoads a respectable second place.

EDIT: Sorry OP, just noticed your note about arcade in the OP. I nominate Tumblepop.

I was only 4 years in 1991, but some years later I had NES and Genesis and these are my choices:

1. Sonic the Hedgehog
2. Streets of Rage
3. Battletoads (NES)

Yup, I'm really trying with arcade after several users mentioned it in previous 90s threads. Even with declining sales in the 90s, they were still a big enough thing that I'm going to make a bigger effort in finding out what arcades came out in a specific year.

Thanks for the nomination. Putting it in. ;)

No worries, I'll try to help with suggestions. These threads are awesome btw.

That was a pretty packed year.

Winner would have to be Super Mario World

Honorable mentions to Civ (played original Civ more than the first sequel), Monkey Island II (didn't play til many years later), FFIV (ditto), F-Zero, Duke Nuke'm, and Act Raiser.

Ok OP, arcade titles you can consider for your list:

2020 super baseball
Robocop 2
Seibu Cup Soccer
The Simpsons
Soccer brawl
Sunset Riders
Vendetta
WWF WrestleFest

You can disregard Seibu Cup Soccer if you like as it is pretty niche, but I remember it as the first soccer game to really "wow" me with it's gameplay and graphics and it was pretty popular where I grew up.

1. Turrican II
2. Hunter
3. Eye of the Beholder
4. Lotus Turbo Challenge 2
5. Another World
6. Lemmings
7. Mega lo Mania
8. Super Cars II
9. PGA Tour Golf

Didn't get to play Civilization, Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog in that year...

Not a lot came out on consoles, at least compared to how much would come out by the end of the decade and beyond, so no worries populating the list a bit. ;)

Wow, what a great year. Actraiser is still one of my favorite games of all time. But Tecmo Bowl, Super Mario 3 and others are legends too.

Street Fighter 2, it's not even close.

All of the other games that I really enjoyed a lot though were:

ActRaiser
Out of this World
Final Fantasy IV
Gradius III
Shining in the Darkness
Streets of Rage
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Super Mario World < this would probably have been my favorite if SF2 had not existed yet.

What a year!

I can't choose... Really can't. I probably have more hours on Super Mario World, but my personal favourite is:

ActRaiser

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Holy crap, I was only 5 back then.

Based on the list the choice is either Final Fantasy IV or Streets of Rage. Both games I played much later and both games hold a big place in my 'this is what got me into gaming' list.

1. Super Mario World
2. Civilization
3. Monkey Island 2

In many ways Super Mario World still hasn't been surpassed within its genre, Civilization has been surpassed by any other game in the series but still laid the groundwork for one of my favorite franchises in gaming, and Monkey Island 2 (even though I personally preferred MI1) sort of improved on the Lucas Arts formula.

Hard year, but I'll go with Sonic.

This one is a toss up between:

&

I honestly can't separate the two. Both took up so, so much of my time and I still play them to this day.

Ahh man, the Christmas I got a MD with these two games. Best Christmas ever.
