According to a FAQ released for the upcoming "Better Together" Minecraft update, Microsoft wants to bring it to PlayStation 4 and wants to work with Sony, it also confirms that Microsoft is indeed in negotiations with Sony: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/better-together-faq

Q: Will the new version be available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch?

A: While we are thrilled to be able to confirm the new version of Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch, we are still in discussions with Sony about PlayStation and have nothing to confirm. We would love to work with Sony to bring players on PlayStation 4 into this ecosystem as well.

Doubt anything will come out of this, but good news though. That being said, one would think they would've talked to Sony before they announced their cross play policy before they announced it to the public instead of being left to dry like what happened

They did, and Sony refused.

It seems this FAQ is not only aimed at answering consumer questions but also Sony's questions.
Q: Is the Better Together Update safe for kids?
A: The Better Together Update will enable players to discover new content and creations across all devices, as well as the option to find new and like-minded players, as with any multiplayer game. Helping keep kids safe online is a priority for Minecraft, and we provide parental controls across platforms via Xbox Live which help parents choose the content, communication and sharing settings that are right for their families. For many, the most important of these is making sure that your kids are using child accounts which you have control over. To do this on Xbox, you can find out more at http://aka.ms/xblsafety.

Of course MS would love this. PSN users would have to create an Xbox Live account for this to work. Upping their user base and allowing them to market Playstation users in the process.

It's the Rocket League crossplay that Sony needs to get their heads out of their asses on.

MS has been saying this since it was first announced. Its of course good they haven't given up but Sony is going to do what they are going to do unless MS is willing to make concessions I imagine.

Sony would allow it if MS would stop trying to push their shit unto the Playstation ecosystem.
Then explain why Sony doesn't allow Rocket League crossplay with other consoles?

Sony already allows other parties into their ecosystem. Playing FFXIV requires a SE account, playing Dreadnought requires a Grey Box account, etc.

Sony won't let games on Playstation require an Xbox live account (which I think is a reasonable stance), but it's no surprise that MS are open to it.

The bigger question mark to me is Rocket League and other games not owned by MS.

I mean, Sony (and MS and evreyone else) let's every other company do it. If Sony didn't want MS to 'taint' the PS4 they could've just not let minecraft onto it in the first place.

It sucks that PlayStation Minecraft players will most likely miss out on the cross play feature and the larger playerbase, but I suppose that's just good business.

Even in a world where Sony allows console crossplay on things like Rocket League... this is not going to happen, maybe if they cut the Xbox Live requirement....

Q: What is going to happen to the old console edition?

A: The old console edition will not be available for new purchase after the full release of Minecraft on Xbox One and Switch. Existing owners will still be able to access and play the old console version and minigames, but those versions will not receive updates after the official release of Minecraft.

I wonder what this means for the PS4 version. I know they're not going to support the previous generations, and that just leaves the PS4 as the only current console version

Erm No....these wouldn't be full XBL accounts, they'd most likely be Single sign on accounts specifically made for other external services to plug into XBL. You'd connect via PSN and a random account is generate which is associated to you PSN ID, how do you think we can use you Facebook/Google accounts for lots of different services without inputting any details? Nothing valuable is shared outside of username and perhaps PSNID. XBL would only be a authentication tier.

Don't really care for crossplay so hope Sony holds strong. Seems like it could bring all kinds of problems especially if it extends to PC.

I thought it might be because it would make the development process easier if they were working on the same build/code for all relevant platforms but you're probably right, its so they can artificially increase there MAU's.....

There is no reasonable argument that Xbox Live logins would represent any kind of serious issue. Further, there's no reason to believe that it's the source of Sony's lack of cooperation, given that it is not a requirement for Rocket League, another game for which Sony has prevented cross-play with Nintendo and Microsoft players.

Sony, for whatever reason, does not want cross-play with other consoles, full-stop.

They won't let folks log in using the psn IDP (SSO) and are insisting folks have to create a Microsoft held account to play.

I would agree with Sony that having to create an account on your compeditors ecosystem is bullshit. There is a clear distinction between this and say, the optional origin login in other titles.

Lack of Minecraft PSVR further displays micorosofts intent on using Minecraft as a weapon against Sony

Haha nice PR stunt from MS. If Sony refuse they look like cunts, whereas if MS were as far in front as Sony are now they would never be doing this in the first place.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Of course they wanna add the PS4 Minecraft userbase to their MAU XBL numbers.

Can't hold all this balls, Sony.

The other option would be to let MS look into your PSN data to see which additional stuff you bought for your version of Minecraft.

Would that be more to your liking? I mean you wouldn't have to create a Xbox Live account after all!

There's a lot more features than just crossplay. PS4 will basically be the worst place to play Minecraft on a current gen console once this update is out

These players would not be included in MS's MAU counts, as they already do not count iOS and Android players.

They only require the creation of a free account, not a paid account, so those accounts are irrelevant to anyone anyway, and would only exist for authentication and identification purposes.

An XBL account is just a Microsoft account with a username. So any Windows Live/Hotmail/Outlook, Windows, or Skype account will work, you would simply need to choose a name.

This is no different than any other 3rd party account system.

There is no scheme here by Microsoft either, as the entire system hinges upon a centralized account system with a shared authentication and identification system for paid content, server management, and cross-platform friends lists. As Microsoft is the publisher, that centralized account system is a Microsoft Account. Unless you wish them to create an entirely new account system for Minecraft entirely divorced from all other Microsoft accounts, which would be ridiculous to expect, I'm not sure what people think the alternative would be.

This is just dumb.

And Sony doesn't seem to have an issue with people signing up for UPlay or Rockstar accounts on their PS4s.

So it's okay for Sony to not allow cross play but Microsoft are bad guys for not doing Minecraft PSVR
