ToLoveRu Darkness

Director: Atsushi Ootsuki
Studio: Xebec
Site: http://www.j-toloveru.com/

Yuki Rito’s dalliances with the constantly growing members of his harem reaches a fevered pitch, as Momo plots to hasten the arrival of the inevitable conclusion. Meanwhile, a mysterious red hair girl named Mea Kurosaki enters Sainan High School with a hidden agenda.

It’s ToLoveRu, that cesspool of manic fanservice, the quagmire of loose morals, stripped of any petty concerns like ‘storytelling’ and ‘quality,’ single-handedly responsible for declining birth-rates in Japan and the mental corruption of males worldwide. ToLoveRu Darkness was the spinoff-cum-sequel of the original manga, deviously born out of both shamelessness and rage, the product of a maddened cuckold furious at having drawn 2-D panties for a living even as another man lowered those of his wife. This is the anime for those without shame, for those who have fallen so low there is no turning back.

Censored as fuck.

From the New World

Director: Masashi Ishihama
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Site: http://www.tv-asahi.co.jp/shinsekaiyori/
Trailers: PV 2, PV 3 (watch these!)

The story is set in Japan a millennium from now. Five children - Saki, Satoru, Maria, Mamoru, and Shun — have been born and raised in a tranquil town that can be described as a utopia, overflowing with water and green foilage. The world is ruled by people who have the "cursed power" or "gods' power" of telekinesis. After a certain incident, Saki and the others come to realize the true nature of their world. Before long, they learn everything, including the bloody history that brought humanity to this state. The five throw themselves into life-threatening adventure, fighting to protect friends and a world on the brink of collapse.

hosannainexcelsis: Hot stuff. An adaptation of a Nihon SF Taisho Award-winning novel. Intriuging premise set in a unique post-apocalyptic world. Strong visual design and excellent production values. A skilled animator making his full directorial debut and bringing a host of talent along with him. If you check out one show this season, make it this one.

Best show of the season? Probably

Magi

Director: Koji Masunari
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Site: http://www.project-magi.com/

A young boy named Aladdin sets out to explore the world with his friend, Ugo, a djinn trapped in a flute. Soon, he discovers that he is one of the Magi, a magician with the power to crown kings.

The manga this is based on is excellent stuff, full of great adventure and comedy. The characters are likable, the action is good, and the world is consistently expanding, all tied together with great pacing and intersticed with Shinobu Ohtaka’s humor. What we’ve seen of it animated has been pretty good (all twenty seconds of it) and the designs are appealing, at least in motion when you can ignore the rice bowl mouths. The director is probably known best for his work on the Read Or Die series; Hiroyuki Yoshino, the master behind Guilty Crown/Qwaser/My-HiME, is handling the writing.

It’s A-1. Background porn pretty much.

Gothicmade (movie)

Director: Mamoru Nagano
Site: http://gothicmade.com/

Yes, the same Gothicmade from the noted animator, mecha designer, and author of the minutiae-packed, obsessively detailed Five Star Stories, Mamoru Nagano. It’s been years in the making, announced back in 2006 only to disappear for years at a time, resurfacing now and then to tease, to titillate; a quick search online will show years of posts from forgotten posters on dead forums making the same proclamation, it’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming, a trail of digital echoes reverberating years back into the past. Supposedly it’s coming out at last; the stars have aligned and all we can do now is to wait. Should be lovely, featuring mecha whose designs are fantastically elegant and probably a terrible fucking pain to animate.

Psycho-Pass

Chief Director: Katsuyuki Motohiro
Director: Naoyoshi Shiotani
Studio: Production IG
Site: http://psycho-pass.com/

In a future with the technology to scan and analyze the psychology and personality of a person in an instant, the worth of one's soul is measured and recorded as a systemetic set of values - that is a person's 'Psycho-Pass'.

To protect and uphold the illusion of a utopian society, the Ministry of Welfare's Public Safety Bureau employs this system against those who are deemed by the system to have a high criminality coefficient, and locks them away.

To fight actual crime that slips through the cracks, those potential criminals found suitable are offered positions as crime enforcement officers instead - after all it takes a mind capable of understanding a criminal to catch one. Executive intendants are chosen from the elites of society to monitor and lead these officers - the system's leash on these necessary but untrustworthy hounds.

This is the story of the men and women of the Criminal Investigation Department, and their pursuit of justice...

duckroll: Dystopian future scifi police thriller. Gen Urobuchi. Production IG. Is this real life? An actual original scifi anime with adult characters, a potential for solid gun action, cloudy character motivations, and an Orwellian system just waiting to fall apart? Sign me up!

Robotics;Notes

Director: Kazuya Nomura
Studio: Production I.G.
Site: http://roboticsnotes.tv/

In 2019, Kaito Yashio is a member of his school's robotics club and a fan of fighting games. His classmate Akiho is a world renowned programmer of fighting games. Together they decide to create an actual giant robot and seek help from their friends.

I don’t know much about the VN that it is based on, other than its relations to the other semi;colon abusing series in 5pb’s science adventure lineup. I like the director’s previous efforts, and the designs/production are appealing as well, far moreso than White Fox’s effort on Steins;Gate. It’s set to run through both Fall and Winter on the noitaminA timeslot, along with the other Production I.G. show of the season, Psycho-Pass.

It’s not Steins;Gate

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure

Director: Kenichi Suzuki (SD Gundam) and Naokatsu Tsuda (Inu x Boku SS)
Studio: David Production
Site: http://wwws.warnerbros.co.jp/jojo-animation/

cosmicblizzard: You guys remember when anime was synonymous with MANLINESS? Well guess what's back! The motherfucking JoJos! The only thing more important to these guys than being manly is being fabulous. You want action? You got it! You want vampires? Screw that Twilight shit, you got that too! You want flamboyant poses from legit threatening characters? That's another check! Come and join the Joestars as they finally get a chance to shine in a 20 years overdue animation.

I dropped it. What resulted was a series of excruciating deaths by a thousand blades spinning in an absurdly fast rate. One who does not wish to suffer such a fate should watch this show. RIP by fandeath.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! - or, Regardless of My Adolescent Delusions of Grandeur, I Want a Date!

Director: Ishihara Tatsuya
Studio: Kyoto Animation
Site: http://www.anime-chu-2.com/

Based on a light novel submitted to one of their contests that no one actually wins (but then, I suppose this particular novel won in the end, considering it was published and now it stands some chance at success via association with what will presumably be a popular show), it burned my eyes and now I am clinically blind. I write this with the assistance of a capable seeing-eye dog.

It has Jun Fukyama being... Jun Fukyama. You should probably watch it.

----------
Nerawareta Gakuen (movie)

Director: Ryosuke Nakamura
Studio: Sunrise
Site: http://www.neragaku.com/

Ryosuke Nakamura, noted for his work on Mouryou no Hako among others, is helming this ‘new take’ on the children’s novel by Taku Mayumura. It’s apparently a well-known franchise in Japan with several different adaptations of it throughout the past few decades; unfortunately I had never heard of it before the announcement of the anime, and thus is unable to offer any real perspective on just what it might be about, outside of the synopsis provided by the SLA site for its international premiere in Scotland. The premise seems amusing enough and the PVs were promising.

Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb

Director: Akiyuki Shinbo
Studio: SHAFT
Site: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/hidamari/index-j.html

Ultimadrago: Hidamari Sketch is a warm slice-of-life series that makes for a relaxing watch no matter how my day is going. The characters are largely simple, but have reflective moments that serve as a thicker dimension for them. The art direction is colorful, charming and at times really neat. For an anime to watch with a snack nearby along with time to ease from daily responsibilities and stressors, Hidamari Sketch's comfortable fluffy arms of "Wideface" is the place to rest.

Shoot me now cuz what I’m going to say we’ll probably make AnimeGAF extremely an- *dies*

----------
Zetsuen no Tempest

Director: Masahiro Ando
Studio: BONES
Site: http://www.zetsuen.net/

duckroll: Okay, full disclosure - This is based on a manga that is really bad. Not ha-ha bad, but just plain bad. It's convoluted, too "smart" for its own good, and the pacing is terrible. But have no fear, the anime staff will save the day! Maybe! Masahiro Ando, director of Sword of the Stranger and Hanasaku Iroha, reunites with studio BONES to attempt to salvage the source material into something exciting and watchable, aided by Michiru Oshima's (Fullmetal Alchemist, Xam'd) classical score performed by an 80-member strong orchestra. At the very least, this should look and sound great!

Good action. Crap script. End of story.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

Director: Hiro Kaburaki
Studio: Brains Base
Site: http://www.tk-anime.info/
Trailer: PV

hosannainexcelsis: The manga is a fun romantic comedy, with emphasis on the comedy, featuring a cast of lovable, eccentric social misfits. The staff are solid and seem invested in the show, considering they put out a creative, well-produced trailer with all original material. Should be an enjoyable watch.

Apparently it’s the second coming of Toradora. I can’t confirm if this is true or not. Still reading the manga. Brb

Kyousogiga

Director: Rie Matsumoto
Studio:Toei
Site: http://www.kyousogiga.com/

It’s getting released as a series of short episodes online, on the release dates listed above. The original was a fast, flashy, kinetic as fuck piece of animation that also made no fucking sense. Here’s to a bit more coherence.

---

IWM28.png

----------
Fuse: A Gun Girl’s Detective Story (movie)

Director: Masayaki Miyaji
Studio: TMS Entertainment
Site: fuse-anime.jp

I guess it’s some ex Bones staff (Miyaji directed Xam’d, among others here) working on this movie, which even kinda sounds like Xam’d, with the dog-human hybrids and such. I hope the shorter runtime of a movie gives him the kind of restraint needed to tell a story without it falling apart.

---

WJu4M.jpg

----------
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

Director: Atsuko Ishizaka
Studio: J.C. Staff
Site: sakurasou.tv

‘The Pet Girl of Sakurasou’ kinda sounds like a porn in the making.

It’s some kinda fanservice anime about a girl who’s kinda not there and the boy who becomes her master. Or something. Mari Okada, the woman who saved noitaminA with her efforts on Ano Hana, is working on this. She’s notable for being pretty fucking terrible at her job, so I’m confident that this will be a good show.

Btooom!

Director: Kotono Watanabe
Studio: Madhouse
Site: http://btooom.com/

I remember feeling pretty jelly that Kirito got all the girls with his MMO grinding skills in SAO. It was something I found hard to relate to; I knew my DKP, nowhere near as good as my KDR, would never get me a perfect life partner like Asuna.

Then Btooom! came along, a show for high KDR individuals like me. Now I too can go to sleep while cradling my Asuna pillow.

---

PNbms.jpg

----------
Girls und Panzer

Director: Tsutomu Mizushima
Studio: Actas
Site: http://girls-und-panzer.jp/

It’s a show about cute girls doing cute things, with a fair bit of tank-related jargon being tossed around. There’s also a bit of tanks doing tank things and explosions and tanks sitting there looking like tanks; some good potential for action, along with the kind of physical comedy that Mr. Mizushima does well with. (See: Blood-C; Joshiraku; Azazel-san; etc) Tank porn and cute girls--can’t go wrong, right?

Little Busters

Director: Yoshiki Yamakawa
Studio: J.C. Staff

Dead eyes, bad designs, and a story designed to tear at your tragedy loving soul. Or so it probably goes. It’s KEY. (Seriously, look at that dude’s eyes. He’s seen some shit.)

I suppose the fact that Yamakawa is directing could be of some interest to those who liked Hells, as he worked on it. I don’t think it means much considering the difference in studio/premise/lack of Nakazawa, though.

The Mystical Laws (movie)

Director: Isamu Imakake
Studio: Nikkatsu Video, Kofuku no Kagaku Publications
Site: http://www.mystical-laws.com/intro/intro.html

Japanese cult Happy Science comes out with yet another historically, theologically, and logically challenged movie with unfairly high production values. If the previous five movies are any indication though, this looks to be perfect material for MST3K-style riffing and should prove to be highly entertaining. It'll have space nazis. How could it not?

Series Directors: Hiromitsu Kanazawa, Susumu Kudo
Director: Shingo Suzuki
Studio: GoHands
Site: http://www.facebook.com/starchild.k/app_249257251849625

All we’ve gotten so far are a series of cryptic PVs featuring pretty boys and booby girls, pandering to both sides of the aisle, it seems, with an ugly, overriding colour palette and a taste for frock coats and katanas. There’s a bunch of fangirl-friendly seiyuu, a character called Neko whose main purpose seems to be to run around half-naked, and the whole fucking thing is supposed to be from this anonymous collective of dudes with a twitter account called GoRa Project , or something. The whole thing stinks of a cash-grab of a very cynical sort (as if any other exist in anime, am I right?), there’s like three fucking directors attached to the project (two of whom are ‘series directors’; one was responsible for Princess Lover, the other for the Mardock movies), and it’s from GoHands.

----------
Ixion Saga DT

Director: Shinji Takamatsu
Studio: Brain’s Base
Site: http://ixion-saga-anime.jp/

At first glance, all I could see were the awful character designs and the underwhelming PVs, just a cash-in project for Brain’s Base as they gear up for Baccano 2. However, the director, Shinji Takamatsu, is most well known for a trifecta of well-received comedies--School Rumble, Gintama, and the Daily Lives of Highschool Boys--and early impressions indicate that the show continues along similar lines.

Code: Breaker

Director: Yasuhiro Irie (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Studio: Kinema Citrus
Site: http://www.code-breaker.jp/

cosmicblizzard: Hey, I got an idea. Let's make a series that's like a combination of Death Note and shounen fighting stuff, but instead of portraying the main character as an unsympathetic bastard that drives the point home he's a villain, we'll completely miss the point and make him seem like an alright redeemable guy despite doing shit that's nine times as evil. I BET EVERYONE WILL LOVE THAT!

Jexhius: The most entertaining show of the season.

We can’t have a new season without the obligatory incest show. If there’s one thing that being a Silver Link production is likely to get you, it’s that it’s probably going to be fucking ugly. Some Mayo Chiki staff working on this.

Hayate no Gotoku! Can’t take my eyes off you

Director: Yoichi Ueda
Studio: Manglobe
Site: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/hayate-project/

After working on the financially underwhelming TWGOK, and then the similarly disappointing eroge adaptation Mashiro-iro Symphony, Manglobe is now behind yet another reboot of the popular Hayate the Combat Butler franchise. Of slight interest is the author, Kenjirou Hata’s, increased involvement with the project. Perhaps he finally came to his senses and realized that the true pairing needed to happen in Hayate, hinted above in the choice of image for this entry, and is now working to make it happen.

Ruined Hinagiku. Dropped.

Kamisama Kiss

Director: Akitaro Daichi
Studio: TMS Entertainment
Site: http://www.mikagesha.com/

Daichi is a director well-known for shows such as Kodocha, Now and Then, Here and There, and Gag Manga Biyori among others(the list of shows he’s worked on really is quite varied, ranging from really wacky comedies like GMB and Sexy Commando to shoujo romances to, well, NTHT). I’m not familiar with the manga it’s adapting, but the synopsis and what I’ve read about it indicates there being a pretty average plot--a cute normal girl meets a handsome young man, and they’ll fall in love, one way or the other. The PV was . . . underwhelming.

Aoi Sekai no Chuushin De

Director: Tetsuya Yanagisawa
Studio: 5th Avenue
Site: http://aoisekai.net/anime.html

A novelty piece whose appeal is predicated around a nerd-friendly piece of satire: console wars as fought by console manufacturer mascots transformed into console warriors. Only other thing of interest is that this isn’t a full series; there will be three episodes, one airing in Fall, the other two airing next year.

Medaka Box Abnormal

Director: Shouji Saeki
Studio: Gainax
Site: http://medakabox.jp/

No one really cared when the first season aired, and I doubt the second season will turn out to be any different. Abnormal will cover some interesting battles as the series continues its shift into a full-on battle shonen, but the point where the manga truly hit its stride--coinciding with the introduction of its most popular character--happens at the end of the arc Medaka Box Abnormal covers. The first season sold so poorly I wouldn’t hold out any hopes for a continuation past this one.

It’s a set of three-minute shorts about a couple of girls in a light music club tennis club who doesn’t actually play much music play much tennis. I guess MAPPA is behind it, which could possibly be somewhat interesting (it’s not); Shin Itagaki is directing, writing, designed the characters, and is possibly ordering food for the staff which consists of himself and unsold stacks of Ben-to BDs retrieved from an Amazon warehouse. It’s all pretty ugly.

More interesting than anything about this junk is the fact that the studio is reportedly working on a movie based on a Fumiyo Kono manga. Which you should be excited by.
