Telltale Games Should be Embarrassed...

So I finally got around to playing episode 2 of TWAU after all the season pass mess (which still hasn't been resolved, they had to send out codes for the second episode...) and it's probably the worst performing game/piece of content I have ever played on 360.

It's laggy, there's constant slow-down, it often crashes during load screens, the audio is constantly out of sync and while I didn't accurately measure it, it honestly felt like I sat through more load screens than I did actually playing the episode.

Not only that, this episode didn't even seem take my choices into account and rather went with what TT wanted me to go with...

This on top of how they've handled The Wolf Among Us has pretty much cemented Telltales games as one of the worst developer currently in business. Not even EA and their downright disgusting IAP in Dungeon Keeper comes close to how badly TT have handled TWAU and how technically poor the episodes have been.

It's reached the point for me where I'm tempted to give MS a call tomorrow and demand a refund for episode 1 and the season pass...

I haven't had any technical issues with the game, it ran perfectly well for me. My one complaint about is that it's much too short - just when I thought it was getting good, it ended. Considering the amount of time that has passed between this and the first, it's annoying to say the least.

But I haven't had the issues you've had at all.

I'm sorry to hear you ran into trouble. Fortunately, I've never had to face any of the problems Telltale fans talk about, like the TWD PC save issues. TWAU also runs perfectly for me.

Haven't played TWAU but my PC playthrough of Walking Dead S1 and S2E1 were pretty flawless.

They aren't even on my radar for worst dev.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
I played The Walking Dead on my 360, and I was equally put ogf by the performance problems, especially when the game switches between scenes or camera positions. A shame, because I really like these games.

I hope they jump on next-gen real soon.

Telltale are not only technically incompetent, in my experience they have the worst, most fucked up customer service I've ever had the displeasure to contact.

People seem to give them too much of a pass due to a couple of good games here and there, but I don't trust them, nor I will buy anything from them ever again.

Sorry to hear that but I'm another one who has had zero problems with them. The second episode of TWAU also runs flawlessly.

I imagine the games are probably better on PC, but they are probably the worst games (in terms of performance) you'll come across on 360. Not even TWD S1 performed as badly as TWAU has so far...

This is disappointing, although I bought the pass on sale over the holidays so I guess it's not all bad.

I was hoping that they had gotten a better handle on their engine. TWD ran like complete ass on my PS3 when I played the goty edition last year.

The Walking Dead runs horrendously bad on the PS Vita. The game is great but damn, the framerate skips for like 3 seconds every once in a while and there are some scenes where you have to push the a command beforehand or otherwise you will skip those frames and cause you to die.

Had to restart a sequence like 5 times, it was that bad.

Their engine is obviously a bit of a duct tape job and doesn't perform very well on PS3 / Xbox 360.

The only thing about the episode that seems to disregard your choices is
Snow White getting angry with you for being abusive towards the subject even if you weren't and Bluebeard was
, but you're offered the choice to correct the misconception. Were there any other examples you ran into?

Seems like a Xbox (and PS?) problem. Walking Dead season 1 and 2 run flawless on PC. But on PC you have a good chance of the save bug happening. Not sure if that's also on consoles though.

But yeah, Telltale really needs to fix that regardless. Hope we won't get a save game problem with season 2 of walking dead.

My only problem with the episode was that it felt a bit short considering it's been so long since episode one. I guess this is one of those games you really shouldn't play on a console though.

The
part where your in the police station and the part where where your questioning Dee. It seemed to think I had tortured the guy when I hadn't. Felt like it that was something TT wanted to happen based on how many times it was brought up by Snow, Crane and Toad.

It probably stood out more because of how poorly the episode was performing...

Ah, sorry, for some reason I assumed you also had the pc version. And yeah, now that it's come up, I also had that incredibly annoying save game issue with Walking Dead. I didn't even get the last part of the episode because of it... because what's the point if it's not taking my choices into account?

So yeah, Telltale should be embarrassed, especially if the release on consoles is so bad, and if the save game issue crops up again.

and Wii.

That's the problem, when you create an engine for PC with almost instant data access and then do a quick port job to consoles and use the same code on consoles despite consoles having to load audio etc. from disc.

They even fucked up the multi-5 release of Sam+Max Season 1 for Wii. Selecting anything but English resulted in a broken audio mess. When I contacted them, they went "oh, but that release is only for UK" - then why was that release multi-5 in the first place. They then released the foreign (fixed) versions 6 months later or something like that.

Even their PS3 release of Tales Of Monkey Island had stuttering.

My playthrough of The Walking Dead: S1 was riddled with issues. I did enjoy the game, but the headaches I got by just trying to run the thing were crazy. I see they haven't improved. Not going to bother with any of their games for now.

Not really why so many issues with games that are not really pushing hardware.

Not ok if your one of the people having issues. Episodes are constantly behind schedule also.

Why turn blind eye to a pallet swap company.

Played The Walking Dead on PC and 360 flawlessly, as well as TWAU on PC without any issues. Sorry to hear that the OP is having these problems.

Yeah, it runs pretty bad on PS3. Don't know how it fares on 360 or PC, but I had a fun time with it. Just wish it ran better on PS3.

For the amount of money they get from their fans they really treat them like shit. Their games are technical mess, and they never fix anything in time and the games themselves offer nothing more than an illusion of choice, they are even more non-gamey than David Cage's games. But people somehow manage to forgive them anything, just because "wow, that walking dead game was so emotional, bwah bwah". No wonder TT don't do anything and never improve, because why bother if people eat anything?

While stuff like PS3 Skyrim is inexcusable, their games have massive scale and a lot of checks to constantly make. Not to excuse them either, but it's atleast somewhat understandable why their games would be so hard to QA for. Telltale make incredibly simple games, yet can't even nail the performance when nothing is variable, like a game where mostly unknown amount of stuff can be on screen at once. That, and they have issues with save states, which is the only thing the game needs to track. They're obviously much smaller, but it's kinda crazy to me.

It also sucks, as I enjoy their output and the perform REALLY tries to mess with that. Anytime there's some kind of action sequence with a lot of rapid scene switches the game hangs up and just murders any suspense, and also chugs like crazy while actually trying to line up the controls here. I also don't know what's up with TWoU specifically but when I boot the game it loads, then I get a black screen for a good 15 seconds, then more loading before the title screen.

I was really annoyed by this stuff in Walking Dead, and was hoping with the giant success they had with it this would be improved. But nothing happened.

Hmm I just bought TWOU season pass on the PSN sale. This is discouraging.

Any PS3 impressions here? If it's no worse than TWD was then I'm ok.

Had zero technical issues with the PC version. That said, I agree that they have taken on too much work. The wait between episode 1 and 2 was unacceptable. Also I agree with OP that episode 2 felt sloppy. It felt like the outcomes were pre-made for you, and whatever you chose was ignored. The
hotel investigation
part was laughably bad.

Telltale stuff runs awful on Consoles, I was shocked at how bad TWD was when I replayed it on PS3 for the easy platinum.. For the way those games work they should not run that bad even by brute power alone.

That being said, I also feel the same way with the fact your choices doesn't matter, on my second playthrough of TWD, I went out my way to make the other choice to what I made the first time (for example
selecting to save larry, where kenny kills him anyways, or choosing to take Lilly with you, where she just ends up staying on the bus at the start of the next episode.
which left me quite disappointed, even more so because it was hyped as basically choose your own adventure, not choose slight variations down a set path

Episode 2 of Wolf Among Us runs worse than the first episode did. I will say that walking dead season 2 runs loads better on PS3 than season 1. I guess that game got an updated engine.

Episode one is fine. Episode two runs like dog shit. Its sad because while I'm enjoying them so much the technical problems are starting to grate on me. They also delayed this episode so long as well.

You know I can say I've never had any problems with any Telltale game except one episode of BTTF. Almost everyone had that bug though. It was the glass house glitch. I hear time and time again how bug riddled their games are but haven't ever experienced these bugs. The most common being this save bug. I've never had a save lost in one of their games. Not one damn time. This coming from someone who's bought their games from as far back as the Sam & max days.

Which is weird, its not like the game is taxing the system. The PS3 version has 0 anti-aliasing, but it just stutters so much. Speically when switching scenes. We shouldn't have games running like this at the end of the consoles life.

You should play some Battlefield 4...

On a serious note, thanks for the warning. I'll play it on PC then. Their games on PS3 were also technically disastrous.

I've been playing TWD for the first time in these days too.
The game is a mess, it looks and plays like an interactive movie, except there are no actors and instead we get weird computerized facial expressions.
The gameplay is basically a point and click on rails, your choices are blatantly ignored by the developers throughout the whole game, for example, if you need to choose who to let die between two people, the game will surely take care to kill the other one in the next 30 minutes to be sure there are no plot holes. Many times you get the same answer in a conversation no matter what you said.
Not to mention the amount of technical problems on the disc version on 360. Constant lag as soon as a video starts playing and expecially during QTEs, leading to instant failure. (Did i mention you get a QTE every 5 seconds? And either it doens't matter what you do because another character resolves it for you or you instadie and reload without any consequence on the game?)
I really don't get how this can be anyone's GOTY, it's not really even a game

I feel for you OP, but I haven't experienced the issues you have in my playthrough of TWAU for both episodes on the PC.

Performance is top notch on my 4.5 year old laptop with a crappy (by today's PC standards) Core 2 Duo CPU and ATI Radeon 4670 GPU. I can push the resolution to 1080p, options to High, 0 AA, and still sustain 60 FPS most of the time.

In fact the game runs way better than it does compared to TWD Season 1 where the FPS drops/stutters were so common that I had to settle for a lower rendering resolution and lower settings. I applaud Telltale for actually optimizing the engine better for TWAU on the PC lol.

I had no issues with TWAU. But the walking dead season 1 was full of issues and everyone praised the game, so it kind of sends a mixed message to the studio. If you can get game of the year nods with a game that runs horribly, why focus efforts on fixing that?

That's TellTale on consoles, I've yet to play a TT game that performs acceptable on any platform that's not PC. There was a humble bundle some time ago with lots of TT games, some of which I already owned on PS3/360, but double-dipping on PC was worth it to me.

Telltale games have had performance issues as long as I can remember. I remember trying Sam and Max on 3 different platforms and having issues. And I usually don't even care about that kind of stuff too much. I don't mind when games "dip" below 30 FPS or whatever, but they really need to work on a new engine

Yep, played TWD on PS3 and it had terrible lag issues.

Same with TWD2 and TWAU, not sure why I keep buying this games on PS3 instead of PC... oh yeah, that easy platinum trophy :(

I feel like Telltale is working their staff to death, what with the constant IP acquisition, the aggressive release schedule, the billions of ports and the awful post-release support.
