Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty is “Next-Gen First”

Speaking with IGN, Activision Publishing’s CEO, Eric Hirshberg, confirmed Sledgehammer’s upcoming Call of Duty game is being developed primarily for next-gen platforms. The news came after last week’s earnings call, during which Activision revealed that Sledgehammer was developing 2014’s Call of Duty game.

“Sledgehammer is approaching this as a next-gen-first development,” says Hirschberg. “Obviously in the console-transition year, anyone who developed a cross-generational game last year had to deal with the fact that the technology of the next-gen platforms was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit during the development process…. Now that we have the next-gen hardware out in the marketplace and solid, that is our primary development.”
Activision expects Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty to be different from what’s been offered by Infinity Ward and Treyarch. “We give each of our studios a lot of independence,” he says. Seeing the work Sledgehammer did helping Infinity Ward with Modern Warfare 3, Activision’s message to the new studio is “You know what makes this thing great; now go do it your way.” Unfortunately, Activision isn’t quite ready to talk specifically about what Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty will be like, only saying, “the proof will be in the pudding,” adding, “When you see it, hopefully, you’ll see what I’m talking about.”

I am excited to see what they can bring to MP. I think it would be awesome if instead of just upping the amount of bull shit in the game, they rebooted the MP with a return to the simplicity and awesomeness of CoD4/World at War.

Hopefully we see some new & fresh ideas & graphics that actually look like they're on a brand new console. Just because they say they're focusing on next gen though doesn't mean that it will actually push the systems.

THEN WHAT THE FUCK IS TREYARCH DOING?!?!?!
CoD 2015.

Hopefully they make up for Ghosts. I have to play Blops 2 whenever I want that itch scratched and it looks like ass on my PS3

I won't get my hopes up.. it'll probably suck as much as Ghosts did (IMO). I'm ready to be surprised though.

Won't happen. The audience wants a fuckton of customisation. Trust me when I say I want cod4 again though.

2015 dude.

I'm not sure I buy what they're saying but we'll see soon enough. Sledgehammer is such a huge question mark to me right now. I hope it turns out well. What Ghosts ended up being bummed me out. Fuck that game.

No more maps where there are 6 ways to get into each building. I feel like I'm playing an arcade game where I have to constantly run and move.

Make a "base" on either end of the map and a central area. There.

Looking forward to seeing what this looks like on WiiU.

I hope they absolutely shock people with the setting. Completely ditch the modern military style, and go to medieval times or some crazy shit. It won't happen but that would be badass.

The story of Sledgehammer is super fascinating. Former Visceral people hired by Activision to work on a CoD third-person spin-off game, but had that taken away from them and asked to save MW3 and now working on this years big CoD game.

But smart of Activision to let each studio get their own subset of CoD (MW, Blops and new twist), while it still is obviously CoD it makes it seem a bit fresher each year.

Another cross-gen game, then?

Ugh.

Cross-gen is going to stick around for the forseeable future.

Lol okay Eric, you said pretty much the same thing about Ghosts. I'm sitting COD out for the next couple of years unless they properly impress with something new. Titanfall and Halo will be my weapons of choice in the meantime.

The crowd is still largely on 360 and PS3. As long as they represent the majority of the player base, Activision is going to cater to them first.

If they want people to move to next-gen system, maybe they should start making exclusives for them...
