Rime: Microsoft rejected Tequila Works’ game before it became PS4 exclusive

Honestly I'm glad this happened, Rime is one the games I'm more excited to play on the PS4 and one of the reasons that pushed me to get one. At least one so soon.

Microsoft is pursuing a different market from Sony, that has been clear since the reveal and cases like this help show that.

EDIT: the one thing I don't like from that document is that there isn't a story. I think that art style would be perfect for a story-based game.

We've only seen about a minute of supposed gameplay, and whilst it has a Gorgeous artstyle it didn't really show any of this crafting e.t.c they pitched in there document.

I'm excited to see the final product , but then I thought dead light was good until I hit the halfway mark.

Heh.. Thanks MS.

Maybe Microsoft wasn't satisfied by Deadlight quality and/or sales and didn't believe in Tequila Works anymore. Jury is still out.

I suspect you might be correct. Deadlight was pushed heavily in one of the promotions but sadly ended up being pretty average. I hope Rime doesn't end up following a similar path being another style over substance release from Tequila Works.

The design doc there makes the game suddenly way more ambitious than I first expected.
If they match that along with the stunning visuals then it'll be something really amazing

On the contrary, it seems like Sony's budget for greenlighting games is much larger than MS. Or MS is just using more of their budget for useless marketing.

From the interview i posted before:

[...]Then the Xbox One plans were announced and everything changed. The people at Microsoft say that the game doesn't fit in the strategy of the new console, that they are looking for "connected experiences" and the social factor. Rime didn't fit because it was a single-player game, a very traditional game experience. [...]

God, that sounds fucking dreadful to me.

If that's how Microsoft is picking their games, then I really don't know what to say.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
From the interview i posted before:

This whole "social factor" BS is ridiculous. Stop trying to shoehorn that garbage into every game. There is a very large market for single-player games.

Honestly I woud be skeptical too if the developers of Deadlight pitched something to me, especially if the elevator pitch boils down to "game X meets game Y meets movie Z".
Who can reject this beauty?

That's not at all what they rejected though.

I wish there more design docs like those were made public. I love so much to see different ways devs approach a project in its infancy.

I suspect Microsoft's disappointment with how Deadlight turned out also played a role in passing on this game.

Yeah, that's most likely why....combined with the request for over $3 million to fund it. They were probably unsure, but that happens sometimes.

Edit** Oops...guess I was supposed to take a shot at MS in this thread after looking through it again. Every chance some of you get I guess.

It'll probably be more like SotC/Journey style narrative, where it's more in the gameplay/world design than traditional story-telling

People in this thread are making huge assumptions that the pitched game is exactly the same as the Rime we saw, which seems pretty non-true considering the windows phone pitch as well. Can't say I blame MS for rejecting the pitch as is, but since we can see what resulted from the pitch since then, it's easy to say they messed up.

I am thankful to MS for this. I really am hyped for this game and it is the only indie
is it still and indie?
game I have ever had a longing for. The vibes from that initial reveal still send me chills. It just looks incredible.

In treads like this I have to wonder how many people hyping Rime with so little footage shown have actually played that stinker.

Yeah, whilst I'm not giving MS a pass here (I'm interested in Rime), Deadlight was very average and disappointing to me, especially as I was very hyped for it.

I'd be wary of throwing TW 3 million after playing that game.

From the design document what I got was that it was more like Minecraft were the stories are created by the user. I don't want a cutscene heavy game but it would be cool to have a narrative connecting the action.

Of course things might have changed since they first pitched the game, we'll have to wait and see.
