Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2014 (Feb 10 - Feb 16)

Man, demand dropped off a cliff on day 2. Bomba?

Again, this is just predictions.

I have an idea of what Sony wanted to sell. And I have friends in Japan... and follow cheesemeister on twitter. So just putting those things together this is the number that makes sense to me.

But it's not fact. I could be wildly off.

I will say I hope the sales are higher. Not because I'm a PS4 fanboy... but because im a japanese console game fanboy and the country's declining interest in consoles is really a bummer to me. I assume if the ps4 goes to wii u levels that any japanese console games will be heavily "westernized" which is better than nothing... but not exactly what I want.

Most Japanese companies have gone "westernized" with their titles. We'll still have NIS type Japanese stuff, at least.

If the JP console market flops this gen I'm done with consoles. At least western devs put their stuff on PC. The only reason I bought a PS3 this gen was for the region free capability. Heck I even learned enough of the language to play unaided.

Dunno as long as devs like Atlus and NIS keep making games for consoles then I have no problem buying them.

I hope ps4 does well in japan, but i can relate to the japanese going handheld and mobile only , because even though i have a ps3/xbox360 and backlogs on both, i find myself playing more in my 3ds and in my cousins vita

Just wondering, what exactly are people worried about regarding consoles in Japan? Personally i cant really see a mega shift away from consoles and to handheld and mobile. I can see fewer games compared to PS3, but i still see a good amount coming out in the years to come (for consoles that is, not just PS3 in specific).

It's disappointing that we didn't get the numbers on monday.
Still I believe that 300k is the threshold to consider the launch successful (assuming the initial shipment is at least 350k of course).
There's no doubt that Sony has an uphill battle to make a home console a huge success in Japan nowadays, they need to work hard with their japanese studios and third party partners to provide a good flow of games.

If Japan gives up on home consoles I won't be shedding a tear. Handheld is already where it's at for the best Japanese games right now. The Japanese industry can't keep up with the insane budgets required for AAA home console games anyway, so why bother when their energies can be better spent on 3DS and Vita, where they can focus on making better gameplay experiences while not spending millions on making graphics shinier.

3rd highest launch week and higher than 3DS highest week? Sure, why not.

I've already given my prediction but I expect at least 300k.

People were lining up for new Kamen Rider toy during 3DS launch so it inflated the line for 3DS... On the other hand, PS4 has real lines for launch so selling more than 3DS is not imnpossible!

weak console sales = shifting game development to handhelds and mobile i guess (no stopping this imo to be honest). or developing their games to be more "western" are the two main things i see posted

When people talk about Japan "giving up on consoles" and things like that, what do they actually mean? I don't think there will be any big exodus from consoles now - developers and series that are going to move away from them are already in motion.

EDIT: Didn't see test_account's post. Yeah, I imagine some developers will target PS4/XB1 anyway because they're aiming primarily for the West, some niche ones will stay on PS3 because they have an audience there.

PS4 Two Day Sales in Japan (Famitsu): 322,083
http://remoon.blog15.fc2.com/blog-entry-29519.html

That's good news! How does it stack up against other launches? It looks like the 350,000 report was spot on too. Hopefully, for the sake of the Japanese market, the drop off isn't too harsh in the 2nd week. I honestly kind of expect the drop off to be pretty disasterous, but I'd love to be wrong. I wonder what the attach rate was.

That's a pretty solid number. Not a blow out like it has done in other areas around the world but a pretty good number given the market.

the wii did 370k in 2 days.

Really not that bad of a number.

The Wii was more heavily supply constrained though. For a comparative launch the 3DS did 375,000 (Media Create number, haven't dug hard enough for Famitsu) but struggled post launch. This number in itself is not super strong, but neither is it a failure by any means. Honestly if the PS4 followed post-Launch 3DS numbers, that'd still be OK for a home console.

Lol, you wanted that badly to fail huh!

Or maybe they wanted the numbers to tell us something we don't already really know?

That's quite a bit higher than I anticipated, especially given the timing of release and lack of compelling software. #thethirstisreal

Although I still don't expect it to hold up well going forward.

I predict 170k +/- 10k.

I didn't know that.

Predicting 240k.

Very optimistic. I can't see first week sales over 200k.

Prediction PS4: 135k

The anticipation, man. It's killing me.

Anecdotal evidence didn't sound all that promising, but you never know.

Edit: I forgot to predict. 207k.

I predict 250k to 300k.

i'll go with 265.3k maybe 265.9k tops.

Well, I already said 310K for the PS4 in its opening week in the last prediction post for February... Today I would say 250K.

prediction: PS4 = 284k.

I predict 191k

I think that first two days of launch will set PS4 slighlty over 200k. Week after will still be high, over 100k. Than it will naturally collapse, but still I foresee an higher weekly basis compared to the actual PS3 Japanese numbers, similar to PSVita

My prediction:

PS4 158K

Prediction:

PS4 125K

I say 250k!
Below 250k is a total disaster for japan (!).

I'm changing my number now. 125k. I had thought 300k but not anymore.

PS4 predictions?

I'm thinking 150k.

I said 300k iirc. Nearly the entirety of Sales GAf underestimated the launch.

Not too bad for 48 hours. Guessed at more than that, was over ambitious I guess.

But there is apparently stock on the way or already replenished isn't there so be interesting to see how sales continue. Any anecdotal evidence from mondays sales?
