Candy Crush Makers Don't Want to Trademark 'Candy' Anymore

The company behind Candy Crush Saga has withdrawn their trademark application for 'Candy' in the United States, according to documents they filed with the U.S. Trademark Office yesterday.

King, the company behind Candy Crush, filed for a trademark on the word 'Candy' last year, which caused a bit of a stir in the world of gaming, as, well, it's a bit silly to imagine one company owning the rights to any application with the word 'Candy' in it. Last month, some cheeky game developers launched the CandyJam, a game jam devoted to making video games with the words 'Candy' and 'Saga' in them.

Yesterday, King filed for abandonment of the trademark in the United States. When reached by Kotaku, King confirmed the trademark abandonment but declined to comment.

Better late than never I suppose.

Acknowledging you fucked up deserves some credit. Not everyone is capable of that

If I see Candy Crush on anyone's phone, whether I know them or not, my respect for them instantly dissolves.

I've never downloaded the game, seen the game played, or understood the fascination with the game.

Is it Bejeweled with an atrocious pay wall? Is that why it's always Top Grossing in iTunes? I don't even want to google it because I don't want to give them the hits/searches for it - that's how much I dislike everything about that company.

Slow, sarcastic clap, dead pan look.

Then after they leave, we'll talk about how awful they are.

:)

It's good that they have abandoned the fight, but it is more likely about the bad PR than their hearts growing 3 sizes too big, Grinch style.

Still, they could have gone the way the Edge guy did, and dragged it out to the bitter end. Thank goodness for common sense at least.

Don't you think that's taking things a little...far? It not like everyone knows about the copyright issue.

There are a lot of companies that do a lot more evil shit than King. You'd probably have to stop eating lest you lose respect for yourself if you used the same criteria for everything.

Sorry for the double post.

Only after having been called out for being douches about it. It is sad that the single word Candy could be trademarked, and it is sad that humans are imperialistic by nature.

Losing the respect of a person who judges others on something he/she has no knowledge about is going to greatly effect my self-esteem. I look forward to the sleepless nights and therapist sessions.

Yes, I'm sure those people are simply... crushed... to know that Dandalf's respect for them was eviscerated the moment they decided to pass the time waiting for the subway by playing a matching game on their phone.

I still think they're arses for doing it in the first place. It was a dick move and it's no wonder they haven't commented.

I still don't know why people play this game.
Didn't Nintendo create Yoshi's Cookies already?
Both games have sweet stuff in it.

They probably found out it would cost more to have to keep defending it, with no tertiary or monetary benefits at all.

Common sense actually leaks up to the top?

I'm sure it's just to avoid backlash, but it's still good to see.

Cool, still won't ever support the bastards. This coloured my opinion of them, on top of their game design theft.

I think they do. They have the power, the money and the right to destroy any other developer who dares put Candy in their game name but they decided not to. That's worthy of praise in my opinion.
I have the power to murder my roommates in their sleep and nobody applauds me for not doing it.

As stated in another similar thread, and these are important words:

What a bunch of absolute fucking wankers.
