Not open for further replies.
NCL has announced the end of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for its Wii & DS consoles & games in Japan as of 11PM on May 20th, 2014.

This DOES NOT affect the Wii or DS shops. This isn't expected to affect PokeTransporter.

Other services unaffected are:

-DS(i) Browser
-Demae Channel (Wii)
-Hulu (Wii)
-Youtube (Wii)
-Internet Channel (Wii)
-Paid services

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/support/information/2014/0227.html

It seems to affect every game that used the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service for its online, including Mario Kart Wii & DS, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, DS Pokemon titles, The Last Story, Animal Crossing Wide World & Metroid Prime Hunters.

End my service if old.

Nintendo Video for 3DS will also be ending in Japan on March 31st.

This also affects Wii Speak and Wii Speak Channel.

EDIT:

Australia too, same date: http://www.nintendo.com.au/index.php?pageID=6&action=news&sectionID=1

Looks like this is a WW shut down.

What? The page is in Japanese, can you go into specifics? Can you no longer play online Wii games (in Japan)?

I was going to make a "The three people still playing Metroid Prime Hunters will weep" joke, but then I realised that this will affect Pokémon B/W/2 as well.

Noooooo....
XY may have better internet, but goddamnit, BW2 is the better game.

I have been slowly picking up virtual console games in advance of them delisting or shutting down the Wii vc service. Mostly TurboGrafx 16 and a few neo Geo games.

I am absolutely amazed that the Wii virtual console still is up and has so many 3rd party titles still available in 2014.

Well, they learned alot. Like... uh, unified accounts are pretty important.

Wait, no, that's not it.

I got nothing.

Man. I remember purchasing The Dongle so I could play Mario Kart DS. It seemed mindblowing to actually be playing Nintendo games online after the GameCube era.

...Though I guess it was the GameCube era still. November 2005, before the Wii and even a week before the Xbox 360.

Can't Pokemon DNS spoof like they did for the GPS service or whatever Global Trading service in Pokemon was used for to get Pokemon from some other thing?

Seems a little too soon with Black 2 launched a year or two back, but I guess there's not enough people using the service. Hunters was dead, so was Mario Kart DS. I don't expect other "Wi-fi connection" titles outside of Pokemon to be super popular and I guess Pokemon X/Y superceded the DS population now.

Fuck, that means I'll probably never finish getting to all of the Picross 3D downloadable puzzles (there's way more than you can fit on the cart at one time) :(. I've been slowly working through them for a while now after finally finishing all of the downloadable puzzles for Picross DS (which has waaaay less cart space).

I'm guessing the shop stuff is all staying up since you can access those from a Wii U/3DS and they still probably make some money off of it.

So basically they'll kill off Mario Kart Wii's online ten days before MK8. Even though Brawl sucks for online, I hope it's not a habit for them to be killing off communities. Imagine if Melee was online and they killed it because Brawl came out...

Mario Kart Wii, Brawl, the vast myriad of DS games with an online play element, most notably pokemon Gen 4/5? A bit sad, but I suppose all days must come to an end.

I'm assuming that Mario Kart 7, despite being under the N WFC label when it first launched, is unaffected.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Damn, just bought pokemon black and wanted to at least use wifi to transfer content to black 2. Doubt I'll have black 1 done in time.

Damn, end of a era. Not the most amazing era, but still a generally pretty alright one. I'm not playing any of those games still, but my dad is gonna be kind of bummed that he won't be able play Dr. Mario online anymore. :lol

Uh, what does this mean for
Project M
Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

I imagine accomodating the online mode will be even more pointless. Though the given date is only for Japan, right? No announcement regarding US servers?

Mario Kart Wii is also fairly active.

And it's gonna be a big problem for Just Dance 2014 that Ubisoft has just released (October 2013). It's the first Just Dance game with online multiplayer.

Oh man. This is sad to be happening already. I mean, this means that Pokemon Black and White 2 had an online lifespan of like a year and a half. And I'm gonna miss the Mario Karts.
