Digital Foundry: Thief for Xbox One edges out the PS4 version

Better resolution and framerate is now worse than texture filtering...? 20 page thread incoming!

Trilinear filtering is fucking ugly, to be fair.

My main question is why they felt they couldn't do AF on PS4. I'm not really a tech-head but when I'm setting up a new PC game, putting it to 16x AF is the only option I usually just do without thought because the performance hit is utterly negligible.

Seriously, I don't know why we take much notice of their ' conclusions'.

Asset streaming is more apparent on PS4 on occasion. Entering the Crippled Burrick area causes assets to visibly pop in in as the camera pans across. Fortunately, once it's loaded the issue disappears during regular play. In this shot, we see the left pillar on the building has yet to resolve its texture on PS4.

Don't mix the texture filter with assest streaming ;) - not that you did it, but others here will certainly do

If those comparison shots are correct, I would certainly rather be on the Bone than PS4 for this one. Hideous texture filtering. Hate popin, too.

Yadda yadda pc gaming tho.

Wow that N64 blur on ps4, who thought that was a good idea?

So PS4:
- Full 1080p
- Trilinear filtering
- Steadier framerate (>24 FPS)

Xbox One:
- 900p
- 16x anisotropic filtering
- drops to 20's

Yet the Xbox One > PS4, huh?

Yeah... Maybe good idea to edit that sensationalist title

Is this the first next gen game with some actual AF?

First of all, lol at that crave article stating the PS4 framerate is worse than the Xbone's.
Secondly, the final conclusion does seem weird and reaching.

So texture filtering is now considered a win?

I wonder why is the issue manifesting itself on the PS4. It happened with Strider as well. Perhaps a glitch of some sort in the current SDK?

Nothing! I said nothing!
Yep, i'm fine with 1080p not being an absolute must. I prefer it, but not at the cost of a lot of other stuff.
The point is that it looks and runs great. Not that it's 1080p.

Isn't the point that it looks and runs a bit rubbish on both platforms but very slightly less so on the XB1 compared to the PS4.

The article specifically states that it doesn't look nor run great on either console, though. :p

Except if you're thinking framedrops to the 20s is "running great", but at that point, you probably shouldn't be reading Digital Foundry articles. >_>
No but maybe the PS4 version could have improved in 900p.
Maybe the game was just rushed to a finish, don't know.

No. See above.
They should have probably made the XboxOne version 720p.
Or justthey should have delayed the game and put more effort into it.

This looks more like a bungled port than anything... that PS4 image is definitely not because of trilinear filtering... though there are definitely screenshots that highlight this issue.

Question is, is it an intentionally bad port? Or a rush job of some sort? (conspiracy money-hat on)

The people who ported this ported Tomb Raider to PS4

The lower framerate would be a worse thing for most people, so not really. But it mostly shows that both versions have different drawbacks.

It seems like they should've had the Deus Ex team work on Thief if they wanted a competent game (in more regards than just technical ones). As it is, there's no way a crossgen game that looks like that shouldn't run incredibly well on both systems. Drops below 30FPS for either is insane and those PS4 issues are even more mindboggling.

Ewwww. Some framedrops > blurry textures. AF is always the last setting I drop when I play games on PC.
People should try and read the thread before seeing an image and posting immediately. That's an asset loading issue NOT a shitty texture problem.

This game was seriously on my radar. Now it is not.

I have no problems accepting 30 fps games; I have massive problems accepting games that can't hold it there.

I'm concerned that we're already seeing this so early in the generation.

Yes and not for the first time. Either people accept it or ignore every DF comparison.

The fact that a game on a new console doesn't have AF beggars belief when it's been almost free on PCs for years, but I'd still argue a stable framerate is more important.

Verdict:

Given that all other settings are a match between next-gen platforms, the Xbox One release - surprisingly - stacks up favourable against a maxed-out PC playthrough.

More at Digital Foundry, including comparison pictures & video

What? I can buy that the PS4 can't win every single battle (even though its the superior system), but find it very strange that the Xbone would outmatch a maxed out PC on graphical fidelity. That's bizarre. I mean, has that even happened before? (Excluding shitty pc ports from external companies).

I own a PS4 and I agree with DF, texture filtering is vile, frame rate seems shit across the board.

The game doesn't look really great to me, not deserving that performance requirements.

What I noticed (PC Version) is that guardsmen walking like they would (macro)stutter.

FYI guys, it is important to point here that this is more of a bug instead of difference in power. Maybe a bug in the current SDK for PS4, i have no idea TBH.

The same happened with Strider on the PS4, and it wasn't even an issue on X360/PS3 version like it was on the PS4.

As expected, resolution is dropped to 1280x720 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while frame-rate is halved to 30fps. Oddly enough, the texture filtering issue present on PS4 isn't a problem here: floor textures enjoy additional clarity on both PS3 and 360, suggesting that we're looking at a bug on PlayStation 4.

They didn't say it "outmatched" it, they said it holds up surprisingly well. As in, not that far behind. If you read the article you can see the exact ways in which the PC version is better.

Havent had any frame rate issues on the Xbox One. I did download a 5gb patch.

Any notes in what was in the update?

Guess we know that Eidos Montreals Thief team really is the B team - shocking usage out of a decent, well known engine like UE3.

Wrong quote, sorry! I hanestly have a hard time believing that lack of AF is still a problem this gen. :(

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Hasn't the Bilinear Filtering been the main issue in any game where the XB1 tops the PS4? Strider, most recently. What's happening here? Is there a check box someone forgot to tick? I don't ever remember any of the Filterings taking up too much horsepower when I fiddle with my gaming laptop. Maybe the XB1 has a type of that system built into its workings.

Because this is just odd.

The point is that if you want to play Thief, get it on PC and avoid the console versions.

If you only have consoles and want to play Thief, may God help your soul.
