Version with a longer time scale and a 6 million line, so you can see how long it took for other consoles to hit this number:

We haven't had an update from MS in a while but if we assume Europe is selling about the same as NA and we assume Feb was similar to Jan we'd be at about 3.6m for XB1 by start of March.

What's for sure is, MS isn't going to publicise a 3.x number when Sony's trumpeting 6.x. I think MS will at least wait until they can say 5.x, although by then who knows where Sony might be. I guess a lot depends on Titanfall.

i am guessing MS next PR ill be about Titanfall sold or moved xbox one units

Seriously. Sony was the only one of the big 3 that didn't take stupid pills before designing their new box. They simply made a powerful with a nice controller for $400 and everyone ate it up. Keep it simple stupid!

People act like sony/cerney did something amazing. They didn't. It's just the competition is a fucking joke. Of course the jokes have billions in the bank, but the point still stands.

It's nice to have a steady drum beat of data. They're all but taunting Microsoft to provide an update of their own, knowing the comparison is getting less and less favorable.

I'm sure that Xbox family sold well and that those console provided gamers millions of hours of entertainment while killing billions of zombies or interacting with tens of drivetards who know how to drive.

PS4 has a shot at a LTD of 15 million by the end of this year.

Only if summer is not to harsh and fall has excellent games.

EU is selling worse then NA. Whenever Xbone hits 5 million, PS4 is in 10 million area. I guess we wont hear any numbers for a long time. And I doubt that even Titanfall could change this. We might see a "sales doubled" or "sales increased 200%" or something.

Yeah, probably. I mean, Titanfall isn't going to suddenly close this gap, but what MS will be hoping it does is to set up an ongoing level of sales such that this gap doesn't grow. So that over time the relative gap shrinks.

Anyway, looking at this, Titanfall definitely does seem like that last bulkhead before a proper price drop and kinectless SKU. If Titanfall doesn't manage things on its own, it's either that or - most probably - cede very strong dominance to Sony. Maybe PS2 style dominance or close to it.

Hmmm, you know when you hear someone play the guitar, and they are brilliant at it... then some virtuoso picks up that same guitar and makes them sound like they did not know what the fuck they were doing?

This is the console that requires no system sellers.

That's gotta piss off some people.

The whole concept of system sellers is redundant in this day and age when the majority of game sales are multi platform titles, which the PS4 is doing rather better with.

If PS4 continues to sell at similar (albeit a little lower) rate throughout the rest of the year, practically everyone will want to develop for it. Large install base, easy to develop for, flexible rules for publishing.
You hear me Blackbird interactive!

Keep it up Sony. Keep it up!

Those second week Japanese sales are uh...something else. Kind of officially worried about the console market over there.

It's not even a full second week though, no?

But either way, I say fuck the Japanese market, let them produce Japanese games and even if they're niche the 10x higher install base in the west will make up for their lackluster home console market.
two sides of the coin: more localized games but also more games trying to mimic western games.

Goal/forecast was 5 million right?

No, that was an analyst projection. Sony's stated goal has always been 15m home console sales for the year. The ratio of PS3:pS4 that Sony expect has not been revealed publicly, but in their Q3 results they did not restate the estimate higher so they are on course to sell 15m home consoles.

Specifically:

Q1 - 1.1 million home consoles (PS3)
Q2 - 2.0 million home consoles (PS3)
Q3 - 7.8 million home consoles (PS3 + PS4)

Total (Q1 - Q3) - 10.9 million home consoles (PS3 + PS4) as of December 31st, 2013

Amount needed to meet 15 million console goal:

4.1 million home consoles between January 1st, 2014 - March 31st, 2014

After the Rocky week they have had Sony needed some good news, I wonder if Killzone Resolution Gate or the cancellation of exclusives will hinder sales at all.

The one downside to the PS4 being this successful is that it can easily make Sony complacent, not something I want to see happen personally.

No, he's right, it was 5 million. I think perhaps you are getting confused by the 3 million prediction for the end of 2013:

http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/02...nt-say-by-how-much-ps4-marketing-to-increase/

During the earnings call for investors and analysts related to the third quarter of the fiscal year, Sony President and CEO Kazuo Hirai answered a question on whether the sales forecast for the PS4 before the end of March had increased from the former 5 million estimate announced by Andrew House at Tokyo Game Show. Incidentally the predictable question was asked by ACE Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda, with whom we’re quite familiar already.

6mil, wow. It only seems like yesterday when I saw people argue that an amazing launch line-up was important for a console.

i am still sad about them selling the laptop. they used to have the best laptops in Windows. second to Apple IMHO.

and i really love their TVs. they are much better than Samsung in my eyes. just more expensive.

Made in Japan has always meant super high quality as long as I've been alive, and I can't believe I might not be able to buy a Japanese TV in a couple of years.

Nah, surely not. And "cancellation of exclusives"?
They have canceled more than the one "unannounced SSM game" now?
Anyways, SCE has more AAA teams than the competition.
They have canceled several new IP's/games in the last gen (8 Days, The Getaway, SCEE London Action Game, SCEE Cambridge Game, etc.) and still had the most 1st Party Games.
Quite funny how some people are acting now, because one game got canceled at the start of this new gen. Happens every gen. But I'm sure these people know that, but are still ignoring it, just for the sake of bad news ;)

Plural?

Again, House's comment was originally made in response to an analyst who asked if they could beat 5m. Jack Tretton was asked a similar question at the time. Both said that 5m was a good target, or something along those lines. The public facing statements have always related to the 15m home console figure. A lot of people have this 5m figure because the estimate released in May was 10m and was for PS3 only, then they pushed that up to 15m once they included PS4. At no point in time was it revealed that PS3 shipment estimates remained at 10m.

The fact that they have shipped over 6m and will likely hit 7m+ before the quarter ends means they can't have estimated near 5m sales or they would be tooled up for 5m worth of production, which they hit towards the end of December by my calculations.

Sony have never revealed their PS4 sales targets publicly, but one must take into account that they will have produced more than 7m by the end of their financial quarter. The minimum target would have been 6m shipped with extra unit manufacturing being brought online in January once assembly lines begin to idle.

A 5m internal target at Sony doesn't line up with current shipment and sales volume. It's just analysts seeing 10m PS3s, then 15m PS3+PS4 and drawing the wrong conclusion.
