Media Create Sales: Week 8, 2014 (Feb 17 - Feb 23)

Do we know if PS4 have supply constraint? Or even the size of the first shipment units?

It's been sold out at some stores/chains, but it's still available in large enough quantities that you probably could have found one if you really wanted one last week. And yes we do;

More specific numbers:

Famitsu: 87,1% sellthrough - 322k sold / 48k unsold
Dengeki: 84,5-85,4% sellthrough - 317k sold / 54k-58k unsold

Eeeeh, let's not exaggerate here. If it seriously sells less than 10k for too long, there would be bad consequences for the future as well. Like...the impact of the comeback and the amount of support. Or better, when this kind of support will be released. It's not that simple.

It isn't that simple, and how the PS4 or any console is doing, especially early on, is all about momentum. We can't derive or forecast a lot from one or two weeks, so going one way or the other just seems silly IMO.

Hmm looks like someone needs to update this with new titles

Well thanks for the number! Though my knowledge so far seems inadequate to make any further comment.

It's doing well because of tech enthusiast, once the "oh cool, new tech" thing wears off, it's likely to start selling like shit until FF15 or any other exclusive title of significance is out.
Every game, which won't release on the WiiU, too, is a PS4 exclusive.
See MGS: GZ, etc. ;)

suddenly so many people were expecting 60K second week for PS4...

and let's not jump into conclusion yet. Maybe SCEJ's estimate is wrong and the number tomorrow would surprise.

That's still not exclusive, it would be a better joke if there was more "exclusive" games, quite alarmingly there's fuck all so it's simply even greater cause for concern.
Not really "alarmingly", because this is how it always was at launch.
(this time it's a bit more dry, of course, in japan)
But they will get a new Metal Gear Solid title early, FF: Online, etc.
Games are coming.
And again, what I meant: If a game releases on the PS4 and the Bone (only), it's practically a PS4 "exclusive" in japan :p
Because nobody cares about the Bone there.
Almost every game that releases on Wii U is a Wii U exclusive.

And GZ isn't PS4 exclusive.
Uhm...you didn't get the joke ;)

Doubt it. It's in line with the deleted estimate from that blog.

There's no mid tiers, there's no AAA for ages. Even the Vita got a load of port's which the PS4 in Japan is lacking. Alarming is exactly the word that should be used.

It almost sounds like there wasn't a second shipment for PS4 yet, since this week's sales appear to be matching last week's unsold so closely. I'm going to have to go with my gut feeling that it's rather supply constrained right now.

I wasn't expecting a 300k+ launche debut (I was foreseeing a 200k+), but on the other side, I wasn't expecting (if confiremed) a 50k second week too :\

There was a second shipment and we'll find soon how big it was.

Also, the guy put first day sell through ratio and such said PS4 shipment is super low, so don't expect large numbers (he already deleted the post btw).
He said even below 50K is possible, let alone 100k

50k is fucking awful, come on now. That doesn't exactly spell certain doom for the console, but "supply constrained!" isn't something we can determine at this point.

maybe Sony just assumed that the first shipment sold out completely and didnt bother checking how much the second shipment sold.?

I dont have they have their own internal tracking like Nintendo

Very funny.

I expected a big drop for second week, but not that bad. That's abysmal.
Based on the (little) info we have, somewhere around 60k doesnt seem that surprising to me. Out of curiousity, what do you expecting for the 2nd week?

Come on, Sony doesn't have their own internal trackers like Nintendo? Where the hell did you pull that one from?

Considering that sold more than 300k on launch, I expected at least 100k.
Fair enough. It depends on how big the 2nd shipment was. After the first two days, about 50k PS4s were available in Japan according to Famitsu. The 2nd shipment would have had to be at least 50k and we would have to see a near 100% sellout in the 2nd week for it to reach 100k. But we will know more about this tomorrow =)

First Limited Pack out of production (出荷完了)

Regular PS4 available at the beginning of March:

No camera bundle anymore.

Just confirming what we already know.

Ideally, the First Limited Pack would be limited to a nice rounded number such as 400,000 bundles. But it can really be anything 421,748 or 396,489 or 467,103...

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

I remember Chris posted something similar as impressions from some blogs. If that's something that can happen when shipments are very big (like at launch) and you can still have a good debut hardware wise, seeing this being said with a low second week shipment is worrying, I think.

Thinking better about it, maybe PS4's horrid second week (as it seems) won't lead into the console being in the 20k-30k territory in the third week, already. The reason? This week, the regular PS4 pack will be out.

On Amazon, it'll be out on 7th, and it's 45th after being available for around 1 day, and here's its trend up at 21 JPT

http://www.rankbank.net/amaran/history/?date=14030421&cat=videogames&asin=B00IR18MEU

While at Yodobashi, it seems it's already out in most stores, with 3-4 still needing to wait till tomorrow

http://www.yodobashi.com/ec/news/1000073465/index.html?kind=0002&store=0011

Status @ 20:50 JPT - available. Of course, since it should have been available for just some hours. Tomorrow, we'll have a better look.

EDIT: PS4 is now 36th on Amazon

I actually shouldn't talk about this , because i have been guilty of it too . but why the sudden heavy interest in Amazon best seller list ?

Every time during the pre- PS4 in japan launch period ,saying it was out of stock or was at the top of the list it was called a useless and meaningless metric to get a decent picture of it's sales performance .

Is this still the case or did something Change ?

If it's sold out of stores, then it's supply constrained by definition. It may also wind up demand constrained once the channel is full. We'll need to wait to find out for sure, but there's no doubt it's currently supply constrained.

Are there stores without stock? If so yes he is correct. It's supply constrained...not "no stock anywhere"

I expect Sony to primarily focus on their supplies to the west for the rest of the year..much more important than the JP market for now

The sentiment I've gleaned from people in Japan is the console isn't hard to find if you want it. Generally "no stock anywhere" is closer to what most would consider supply constrained, like PS4 in the west or the early days of Wii and DS Lite.

Calling a dead console dead is an accurate description of a dead console.
The sky is blue. Water is wet. And Vita holds absolutely no relevance in the US market.

The Wii U is also on the cusp of irrelevance. It contributes less than 5% of US software sales revenue. It's hardware sales are terrible for a system in its second full calendar year. It isn't a viable platform for anyone but Nintendo, and even then, I don't know whether their projects on it will provide a particularly good return.

Nintendo has accepted this. You should too.

I thought pretty much everyone had given up on WiiU at this point, but I guess I was wrong! You'd have to be ignoring absolutely every single aspect of the things sales and third party support to pretend it is anything other than an albatross around Nintendo's neck at this point. Even Iwata and their own PR has started distancing themselves from the system and speaking about what comes next.

Can either of you show me a source where Nintendo has said that "WiiU is dead" or that they are even starting to move on from it please ?. The QOL platform is something completely different from a home console. Last time Iwata spoke about WiiU he was talking about bringing games out that would show why the tablet exists which would in turn drive further hardware sales, far from calling it "dead"...

Hmm looks like someone needs to update this with new titles

No single title will improve WiiU sales dramatically outside of maybe Mario Kart 8. A combination of much better marketing, software that shows off why the Gamepad exists, a price cut to the same price as the original Wii and a collection of exclusive, big name Nintendo games not available anywhere else will all improve the consoles sales. As I said yesterday all the WiiU has had so far is two Mario games in as many years, a Zelda remake and Pikmin 3.

I don't really get why people won't open their mind to the possibility that a combination of Tropical Freeze, MK8, Hyrule Warriors, Sonic Boom, Bayonetta 2, X and Smash will all improve the consoles value proposition to consumers in 2014, esp if it's combined with a price cut and much better marketing.

And those titles are also only the ones we currently know about, there could very well be a new Wii Sports, Metroid, Animal Crossing and Pokemon games on the way on top of the new Zelda for 2015.

People convinced that Nintendo are going to drop software development for WiiU after the current 2014 games and drop the system in early 2015 are going to be very disappointed*.

*I should add that if I had my way I would drop the console at the end of the year and schedule all the 2015 onward games as first year titles for a much more powerful system to be released in late 2015 but that's just not going to happen.

Well then most people would be wrong. "Supply constrained" has an actual meaning. There are stores that want to stock and sell them, but they can't, because they can't get units from Sony. It's supply constrained.

We don't know how many additional units Sony needs to ship in order to fill the channel and meet demand, but we know that they need to ship some.
