Whats wrong?

I miss the time when talented studios and developers weren't forced to keep working on the same franchises over and over again. I miss the time when a single developer - Rare, for example - would create a new IP simply because they didn't have one genre represented in their catalogue.

This iterative bullshit is why I'm so goddamn tired of triple-A productions and can mostly only have fun with indie releases and visual novels nowadays. This industry went in a direction I'm not overly comfortable with.

I was hoping Rocksteady would create something new next, but their publishers and probably even themselves are too crippled by their huge budget-derived issues to take on a single risk.

I hope this game is a great title that satisfies those who are looking forward to it. I won't buy it, just as I won't buy the next Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Battlefield, or whatever. I also hope I'm able to voice my lack of enthusiasm just as much as those who are able to voice their enthusiasm in this thread without being jumped at.

Good to know. Not sure why, but thanks.

Fuck this industry for giving us another great game to play in a beloved franchise.

WAHH

Aww, did someone not get what they wanted?

So much for that. Enjoy, I guess.

The final Arkham game...

Guess we'll be getting that hot reboot next year!

Warner Bros. has the development resources to do more with their DC properties than Disney/Marvel does with their properties. Instead of capitalizing on that, building individual brands with QUALITY games and in return establishing those brands with the public for other forms of media, we'll continue to get big Batman games because why try anything but safe?

Hopefully Rocksteady does a better job with the story this time around. Their previous games really fall apart at the end in that respect, and Batman is such a bland character in both of them.

AO story is leagues above AA and AC.

I hear people say that, but I hear no reasons why.

I'm not talking about how the characters are written. I'm talking about the cohesiveness of the sequence of events. I don't understand why Arkham Origins gets more praise than the other entries in that regard. Sure, it has shiny cutscenes, but the actual story was better?

So please, enlighten me.

I'm pretty excited for this, but it I kind of wish they had updated the Two-Face and Penguin designs from Arkham City. It made sense for Penguin to have a smashed bottle monocle in City (or, well, it fit the aesthetic at least) and for Two-Face to have a shredded suit, but now that it's just Gotham City and they are super rich crime lords you'd think they'd get some nicer digs. Oh well, minor complaint, I also just like seeing characters looks evolve across games.

Pretty much.
Joker
was great. Bruce and alfred was good.

Arkham City story was hot garbage made worse by the dlc.

Let's hope AK is somewhat ok, but the lack of any story detail besides BATMOBILE in the initial review doesn't make me have much hopes up.

Didn't Rare create a bunch of Donkey Kong and Banjo games?

Yes. But they also went out of their way all the time to create different proposals and experiences, while nowadays you'd be hard-pressed to find a western studio that works on more than one franchise concurrently... And even more to find one that works on multiple genres concurrently.

Everybody is entitled to their opinions.

But it makes little sense (to me) that you would avoid buying a title you yourself hope is great on principle. Indy experiences can be touching and moving, but there's nothing wrong with AAA sizzle and flash from time to time either.

And before you lament workers at Rocksteady being trapped with a franchise - that they created, mind you - understand that studio is stuffed full of Bat-fanatics. I'm sure lots of those guys love working on the Arkham games, trying to create something special.

But yeah, f*** them and this industry.

No mention of PS3 / Xb360 in any of the trailers or marketing material so it's safe to assume its current gen only.

Come on people PS4 - Xbox One are current gen now!

PS3 and 360 were called next gen for nearly ten years. PS4 and Xbox One will get the same treatment.

Well, it wasn't twist after convoluted twist like the ending of AC.

Yup, just noticed the press release in the OP. Crazy hyped. Argh PS4 or PC? :(

it could be farmed out though.

if it is on unreal 3, you probably could scale it down to last gen and make way more money than having it current gen only.

Warner Bros is starting to be a top publisher for me personally. Next gen Batman, the new LOTR game and Netherrealms rumored next title are all at or near the top of my interest list. If they want to produce nothing but top quality licensed games then so be it.

If you only look at the titles themselves, sure. However, they are awful in terms of supporting games post-launch when issues arise, especially the cash-grab port jobs they farm out and don't allow the devs to fix issues after release. I think they're as bad or worse than a lot of other pubs people seem to hate.

Doesn't this statement come across as entitled to you? We have three mainline Batman games over the course five years and two console generations; Final Fantasy has three lightning games in three years; Call of Duty has a game every Fall; EA promotes yearly sports games. That's playing it safe.

Yet Rocksteady creates the two best Superhero games we've ever seen, and we're clamoring at the bit to judge the completion of what they claim is a trilogy (first I have heard of it). Still - we have plenty of time to see this one out before we start calling it playing it safe. It's what we expected, but this is the one studio and one game I don't expect to be a cash cow.

Wouldn't have been interested in this if it weren't "next-gen" only. Glad it is. Disappointed in CG only trailer. I just don't even watch them anymore.

That's because they're expensive, time-consuming, and manpower-intensive productions. A lot of studios simply don't have the resources to work on more than one game at a time.

I hope they're great for those who can enjoy this kind of experience more than once. Personally, I thought Arkham Asylum was great, but really disliked Arkham City. The formula was already worn out by the first sequel - which is why I didn't even consider picking Arkham Origins up. Unless they really shake things up (which they won't), I won't enjoy Arkham Knight.

It's a great thing that all those Bat-fanatics get to work on a franchise they enjoy. I, too, work on something I enjoy, and I wish everyone could do the same.

Still, yeah, fuck this industry and all of its self-imposed creativity-limiting shackles. If you want to put words in my mouth and interpret this as an ad hominem attack on the developers, be my guest. But you'd be wrong.

I know. That's what I said. Things could've been different, but alas.

Thank you.

Finally someone who isn't blind and just follows the mob mentality. I wish people would stop pretending to care about resolutions or whatever, maybe they would see how shitty of a company Warner Bros is.

But no, let's discuss for 40 pages how Killzone isn't actually 1080p.
