In the end the PVP aspects for me and a lot of others is what matters. After some playthroughs it's the only thing that makes me keep going back to to the game every time, just like the predecessors. So I really don't care too much about graphics and I also can live with a slightly worse Singleplayer experience, but I really hope that the movesets, different build and weapons are just as fun as in Dark Souls 1.

I am shocked, nay appalled that FROM would do server side calibrations for a game they designed to be played online.

This is a travesty.

Oh, you must have been a staunch supporter of the original Xbone plan too I see. I know that the game was meant to be played online, but not everyone wants to deal with the intrusive aspect of PvP that was never forced upon you in the previous two games all of the time. I don't give a shit about Dark Souls PvP at all, because it was previously a joke and it will almost certainly be similarly bad this time around. I don't need to summon other people to help me with bosses, and I don't ever find the "hints" all that helpful either. I'm not saying that I do, or want to exclusively play offline either; but it would be really stupid to have to contend with two different versions.

Definitely going with magic. The magic system seemed to be the most expanded one this time.

It certainly looks to be more interesting now, but it also drains endurance like melee attacks (no idea how much per cast though). Not sure how I feel about that at all either. They said that they wanted to make magic as fun as melee, but if their idea of "fun" was just watching a green bar go down, I think we have very clashing opinions on what makes a game fun.

All this overreactions over the lighting.

Lol it's pretty funny. This is par for the course in Neogaf just before a really hyped game is about to release.

I think the hand-wringing over the mirror knight downgrade is hilarious. The GIF version being obviously a cut-scene version as evidenced by the way the camera is carefully positioned head-on to show the emergence of the clone through the shield before cutting instantaneously to a 90 degree two-shot so as best to show the blast of debris and the player standing in its way.

Neither views are possible with the regular gameplay camera, so its always going to be an apples versus oranges comparison. I mean if you are tweaking the camera around so as to make the best visual impression, why not turn up the fx all-round too, because the bottom-line is you don't have any interactivity to worry about.

at last, for christ's sake
looks fine from the stream i'm watching, and seems like a good game. Interest rising

Tell me about it. Once the full game releases GAF will be back to THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVAH mode.

THe game looks fine btw. As it was established earlier the screenshots do the game no justice.

Or this could turn into Dragon Age 2 and go with ohh it looks like shit and it's casual as fuck.

I'll pick it up when it hits steam for cheap. I'm still not convinced with this game after hating most of dark.

I don't give a shit about technical shortcomings that will be resolved by the PC version, which is the one I'll play.

I am worried, however, about the amount of boring/artistically uninspired environnments I've seen in the streams.

Hahaha! Oh must I now? Do I have any other opinions you want to inform me about?

That's a shame. I like the way they integrated MP & SP both narratively and mechanically. I think it is one of the unique and defining aspects of the series; the perpetual fear of invasion, the quiet bond between you and your co op partner. I personally think to play DS offline is to miss out on the intended experience.

Okay, but many people have posted gameplay video's of the fight. In those video's the lightning looks great. The gray screenshot could still be just an unfortunate shot from a low quality stream, but there is more evidence suggesting that the lightning has been downgraded.

A downgrade is not an apocalyptic disaster, but I think we can all agree that it's at least unfortunate.

What if their are two bosses. Veggy said their were secret bosses in the game. It would explain the name change the " downgrade " and atmosphere

All I want is my Dark Souls in my hands so I can play it after a long tiresome day and enjoy everything this game have to offer with some coffee/tea on the side. Then, share some hype with my good old fellow GAFfers and have great fun while playing as well discussing with you all.

I know many of us are letting the hype or the anticipation get the worst of us but soon most of us (some, like me have to wait a little longer, unfortunately) will be able to enjoy it and see it for ourselves how the game really looks. I can only wish for the best experience possible, after all it's Dark Souls. ;)

All I want to know is how things turned negative so fast in this thread? I just slept a bit and bam according to this thread the game sucks worse than 2 souls games already.

Well what the hell else do you expect someone to think, when your condescending reply was basically "get gud noob and deal with it"?

I expect you to read my condescending reply, for starters.

I didn't call you a noob or tell you to deal with it, I was pointing out the absurdity of getting up in arms about server side game updates for a game designed from the ground up to use servers.

Shhh. Youz are spoiling teh finalz bos fite.

You mean riposting Gwyn for Awesome?

What is wrong with you people?

Last night, everyone was fine with how the game looked and what they could tell from videos. Excited, even.

*Literally* overnight suddenly it's the worst thing ever?

LOL.

Keep your pants on, guys. Grow up. I've peaked at some videos and streams, I've seen some of the early game, it looks perfectly fine to me. The animations themselves are so much vastly better (I care a lot about animation in games, and I'm something of an animator myself) it alone is worth the price of admission.

I'm not saying it's out of bounds to criticize the game. I'm saying that this lurching and crowdthink is really annoying right now, especially when the majority of the naysayers haven't even played the game.

Here's some real talk and measured perspective: It is, and will be, what one would expect: Similar in appearance to Dark Souls 1 on consoles but with some upgrades and improvements around the margins. What else did you honestly want? It's PS3, and there are limits.

I think the overreaction is the overreaction about the negativity haha. From what I've seen, it's only two posters who keep harping on the game. Everybody else on Reddit/the spoiler thread are extremely positive.

Dragon Age 2 was shit sure but the overreactions were even worse than the game.

I completely agree. I'm also one in the minority who actually thought the combat was a great improvement over the stale and formulaic gameplay Bioware had been doing since 1998. But then, I also thought Mass Effect 2 was superior to the first game in regards to gameplay too.

The game had a lot of issues, but at least it didn't put me to sleep during the actual gameplay like Origins was prone to do. Oh look, auto attack, whee...

Yeah, you did essentially tell me to deal with it when you feigned incredulity at the notion that anyone would ever want to have the option to play offline. And since you're so adamant about the way the game should be played, there's no other way to take your comment. Get gud and deal with it, or don't play. It's also kind of ridiculous to bother mentioning using servers too as though it's some kind of innovation in gameplay. Plenty of games use servers, and guess what? They still get patches. They still play offline with the same version.

It's not like Dark Souls was the epitome of aesthetically mindblowing environment design. From what I've seen in the streams and without spoiling anything, Dark Souls 2 ups the ante quite a bit.

Someone posts a badly compressed jpg from a 480p livestream, someone else barges in and says "I red somewhere that a random dude said this game looks like dogshit" and that's that.

For those who have the game or watched streams, are the ambient sounds as good as DS1?
I loved the care put into it in the first game (the strongs winds in Anor Londo or the foilage moving in the Royal Woods, hearing Manus in the Chasm of the Abyss , the screams in Olaacile Township, those creepy sounds in New Londo...)

Some effects are recycled and the new ones sound on par with it.

I still think the stepping on grass sfx could be better.

Could you please quote everyone that said this is now the worst game ever? Speaking of overreacting.

I think it's perfectly natural to express some disappointment over a downgrade from demo-builds and the beta. It's very confusing, that's why people were talking about it a few pages ago. It's not like we can talk about the actual game yet, so.

To be clear, I'm still enormously looking forward to playing the game and can't wait to judge it myself. The Souls games are pretty much my favorite games.

It is embarrassing but I can't silence them from voicing their opinions. In the end it ain't me the one jumping the gun and going full on whine mode over nothing too important.

Just to be clear: I'm not overreacting to the lighting by itself, since this would indeed be silly. I was mostly referring to the people stating that the levels and art (in places) look bland and grey and that enemy placement is uninteresting (again: going by their stream impressions, not mine as I've not seen any). Those things, if true, wouldn't be minor gripes within the context of a series known to have excellent atmosphere, art direction etc., in my opinion that is.

I also am fully aware that I'm whining about this, and I'll be the first to admit that the game is fine when it is as soon as I get it in my hands. In fact, I hope it is fine, that those people were wrong, and that my fears are unwarranted.

I'm going to try and reserve a CE at Gamestop this morning. Anyone know if they're still accepting preorders on it? If not, I guess I'll do release day delivery on Amazon.

The downgrades are there and they are obvious (especially in motion) unless the day 1 patch or the PS3 build changes things dramatically.

I don't think the people acting like all of this stuff is manufactured or completely pointless are acting in a much more sensible manner then the people thinking of ending their gaming career over this. I think this stuff matters and should be acknowledged, it should just be taken for what it is. A surprisingly disappointing aspect of a game that still seems to be pretty good regardless of these issues.

I'm kind of sick of these dumb generalizations honestly, stuff like gameplay is the ONLY thing that matters. No it's not. It's the most IMPORTANT part but other aspects matter too. Or the graphics whoring accusations when to me atleast it goes alot deeper than that. It's about polish, care, craftsmanship and overall tone and feel of the finished product. These things matter alot to me and I don't think there's ANYTHING wrong with that. Games are the amalgamation of a bunch of different disciplines, the best games have this synergy between all their different aspects. I'm always looking for those complete package games that get most of everything right. The previous Souls games hit those notes for me and it's just disappointing that this one won't.

With that said, I wish people could react to this stuff a bit more sensibly, no one should take this info and start shouting that the world is falling apart. But it's also not like I made up a knee jerk completely uninformed statement either, there's clearly a significant visual/polish difference between the recent PS3 preview builds and the final 360 version. Very obvious stuff that anyone can see, it's not just a bad screenshot or whatever. Maybe things will be improved through day 1 patches or maybe that's the way it's going to stay but right now this is what it is. That's all I wanted to point out because I was very disappointed personally. I really value atmosphere, polish and little details, that's all there is to this whole thing. Doesn't mean I don't care about gameplay first and foremost and that people shouldn't be excited for the game.

CE yes. Also available online for in-store pickup or delivery. BA edition (for those still intersted) is gone everywhere afaik.

Why exactly are you posting that again? I swear people really don't understand this one.

Those two shots are taken from PRE-RENDERED VIDEO. This is the ultimate example of changes made to art design (even if you don't like the change). This has nothing to do with hardware limitations or problems. It was 100% video.

Uncharted 3 is one of the best looking games on PS3.

Just watched an unboxing vid of the BA edition. That steelbook case looks better than what I was expecting. Will provably end up as the best in my collection once it gets here. Hnnnnggg.

sure that they are pre rendered?

why would they get rid of the shadows in a pre rendered video?

I don't right now but I wouldn't be surprised if some footage popped up today or tommorow, game is out in the wild right now so it's only a matter of time.

That wasn't the only area that was significantly downgraded either, the dragon mansion is probably even more of a dramatic visual difference.

But honestly I'm done with this topic, I'll let other people make the comparison videos or whatever.

Sick of being called out and essentially having to repeat myself.
