Sony Went "Back to the Drawing Board" with Driveclub

Sony's output from WWS for 2014 is quite average if not below. I'd say MS certainly beats them in this department even moreso if Driveclub doesn't even make the 2014 date.

What's going on? And what exclusives are MS releasing this year?

READ THE ARTICLE, PEOPLE.

“So, I think that at PlayStation, perhaps more than at other places, we’re willing to kinda eat that [cost],” Rohde continued, “and go back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it. And that’s what’s going on right now with that game.”

He's saying that he wants Driveclub to be spectacular and wants to take time to polish it.

Again, gamers benefit.

The benefits of being first party is that you can polish a game to heck without needing to hit quarterly estimates or the threat of bad earning reports like 3rd party publishers do--look at all the buggy messes released by EA, Bioware, Bethesda. Part of the reason is that they're under gun to meet release dates to make sure quarterly estimates are hit.

Being first party gives you more latitude. It's a reason why Nintendo also ships when ready and their stuff is polished to heck and back.

This is good news.

This gen has been disappointing so far.

Not especially. It's off to a slow start, certainly, but 2014 still seems to have a lot of exciting games in store.

So this will be now sent to die in the packed Q3/Q4?

Hopefully not. Anything after September is pretty much just asking for this game to only sell to racing hardcore fans, while everyone else buys the crapload of other titles that'll be released in the second half of the year.

To all those posts saying "read the article" why don't you spell out what we're missing?

Its possible that my reading comprehension has gone to shit in my despair, but its a short article, and none of it was positive for those who have been waiting on this game since launch.

What exactly is being misunderstood here? Point out the silver lining please.
Lol. Exactly what I've been thinking.

I'm not going to post here a twitter conversation, but you can search a conversation from two days ago there between famous and thuway about the date...

I wonder what the issue was though, it would be nice to hear some of the details on what the devs thought wasn't up to scratch.

It's not exactly the most positive thing in regards to a release date, but it's not determinant towards said date either.

1. Title says that Driveclub is being built up from scratch (meaning remade, in a sense, and then being put back together for the better)
2. People freak out because this means a longer wait
3. Article is talking about the previous delay, the one around launch
4. What they are really talking about is polishing the fuck out of the game and that's why there was a delay because it wasn't ready to take out of the oven

Its a racing game I probably won't like..

Now a new Midnight Club or NFS: Underground would get me excited...

I had no idea, sorry about that. But what the hell is Media Molecule working on?

I'm pretty sure its something like Project Spark.
Like the level creator mode in LittleBigPlanet but in 3D.
From what they've shown at the Ps4 reveal that would fit. Building your own objects and animating things and stuff.
Btw. thats also something very suitable for VR.

I mean, its good news that they're willing to spend money and time to fix it. But overall, some bad shit definitely happened. This was THE ps+ launch title, there was definitely something that went real wrong/mismanaged if they can't even confirm 2014.

When they announced this game they said this is the game they have always wanted to make so why they need to go back to drawing board with it again?

You mean within the realm of the launch - they aren't going back to the drawing board RIGHT NOW, so much as explaining what they did before.

Again though, consider the bold.

Sounds like a current status, not just a past status.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Meh. I'd honestly prefer they just polish up what they have and put it on PlayStation Plus. Go back to drawing board with a sequel or just keep adding on content over the next couple years like Burnout Paradise did.

Well, that explains the lack of news...
It's kinda ironic that the Sony's big release titles are being pushed back. Watchdogs was shown at the reveal with exclusive content, now drive club is probably pushed back a bit. At least infamous is on track as far as I'm aware.

The broken promise does suck. But I've never seen polishing a game or giving it more time--with reason--as a bad thing. Nintendo does it all the time with great results. As does Valve.

Even after reading the article, i'm not sure how you see that as good news. When it was delayed shortly before launch, i don't think anyone thought it was delayed because it needed a massive re-haul or they had to go "back to the drawing board". I think most of us thought it was delayed a bit to give it more polish. The fact that it needed a large change so close to launch is worrisome and doesn't give me the most confidence that the team can ship a superb, polished product. Development hell is never good.

Yup. I sadly agree with this. I wonder if there is too much headbutting between the old guard Evo and the former Bizarre members.

smh what a disaster

this holiday season will probably be the release for driveclub but if i have to choose between this or the order or if Uncharted comes out this year, sorry driveclub

was interested too :(

People aren't mad that Sony didn't release a buggy unfinished game. They're mad because of how poor shape the game must have been in to warrant such a long delay (longer than they must have been expecting, too, with their original delay stating "early 2014"). They wanted it to have been better sooner. It was a game people were looking forward to playing at launch.

This is good news.

I'd be inclined to agree if they... didn't freakin' announce it as a launch title! And as a free game on PS Plus as well.

Frankly everything about the launch of the PS4 and the X1 has been a train wreck. I'm happy to see they sold a lot, but I wouldn't say those are well deserved sales. Both systems missed many features at launch, the library of games was lackluster, with the notable games being third party and cross-gen and there's been a big drought of games ever since launch.

I read that as it "was" delayed" thats whats "going on right now with the game" ie..Its still in that process, not re-starting over again. But thats how I read the context.

Or they realized going for another goal in addition was worth the wait (e.g. 60fps and/or VR)..there certainly isn't a lot of marketing pressure. I think this is much more likely than your theory. We will know once the details come out I guess

funny thing that DC older build looked a generation leap compared to Forza 5, yet Sony decided to polish the game even more while MS released Forza 5 as is.

That's gives you a perspective on quality standards between Sony and Microsoft.

I also think the vast majority of people didn't think retooling the game to the extent that "going back to the drawing board" was a proper description was the reason for the initial delay. Seems most people were under the impression that it was basically to give the game some more polish time rather than bring it out in time for launch and the crunch associated with that.

However, describing what happened with that delay as "going back to the drawing board" pains a much grimmer picture about the actual state of the game's systems and online functionality than anyone thought was being worked during the delay period.

This. Regardless of whether the comment was from November or not, 'drawing board' is a lot more than a few months polishing which was implied at the time

This isn't necessary man. I was mixed on Forza, but that game looked great to me.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed the delay is the result of Driveclub being tweaked/optimized to work with Sony's *rumoured* VR headset. DC launching alongside the headset, this year, would be epic. Perhaps we will have a better understanding at the beginning of next week once GDC is underway.

Can we please not do this console war thing right now?

Um... there could be many things wrong with the game not seen in the GIFs, videos and shots. Driving mechanics, customization, social functions, AI, ect...

I don't think extrapolating any kind of quality control from these events is wise.

coolasj19

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Sony still better give this game away for free, whenever it launches.
*sigh*
PS+ Edition will of course be there. It's not "free" though. It never was. Simply what basically amounts to a glorified demo that's large enough to get a Platinum trophy, which are vague terms in the first place.

There's no reason they would take it off the program, regardless.
Yup, I'm thinking this as well.
And lol @ IGN click-bait title making everyone flip a shit.
I really don't understand the purpose of clickbait titles in a forum. You don't gain anything from it. Yes, OP I know you didn't mean to, but I think everyone needs to take some liberties with their threads.
