999 the novel (iOS) launches March 17

I think the only thing I'm actually missing from this "remake" is voices. (Though, I'm sure most people would just complain about them anyways... -_-)

Thankfully there's at least the fandub that's slowly in progress.

?

999 never had voice acting, in any format. What're you talking about?

Why are people assuming that the puzzling being cut out means the rooms themselves and their story are cut out?

I assume they've just novelized what happens in the rooms, the character interactions and, well, the story.

Funny, I just started 999 on DS last night.

Really hope the adoration is deserved because so far I find the subject matter completely flies in the face of the ridiculous character art. Puzzles are kind of just ok and even for a visual novel it reads wayyyyyy tooooo sloooowwwwllly. Only put maybe 2 hours in so far, but I can't tap the screen fast enough to make the text crawl faster.

I'll keep at it though.

you can fast-forward the text when you start replaying parts. any text you read already can be fast-forwarded. i don't wanna spoil anything but you'll understand.

Not simply details important to the overarching story, but the little things that flesh out the characters, make them interesting. Basically, the same sort of quirks, humor, and bits of characterization you'd get from investigating rooms in an Ace Attorney game.

Being fine with watering down everything that would help make either the story or the characters it revolves around more interesting just to be rid of puzzles sounds more than a bit extreme to me.

I don't know how they've implemented it in the iOS version but why can't they include little things that flesh out the characters like many other visual novels?

I wish you could just skip some sections though. Game crashed when I was on the final route near the end and I had to hold fast forward for like 20 minutes.

yea, replaying puzzles was probably the only thing i didn't like about it. i ended up using a guide as a reminder for the puzzles i had to replay. they fixed that in VLR which was a relief.

Is this new character artwork? I don't recall seeing these before.

Yep. The characters all use portraits now instead of sprites, so they came up with new high-res portraits for everyone. I ripped them back when the Japanese version came out, but I'm not sure if posting that is against GAF TOS. (I'd imagine it's about the same category as sprites, but I'd rather not push my luck.)

I never actually heard any impressions about the Japanese version. I wonder how it turned out.

Theyll be fixing the fact that the character photos on the site have heavy spoilers, FYI.
No idea when theyll do it, but yeah. Avoid them until then?

Well, the text beeps aside, I meant that I was hoping a remake would include voice acting of some sort, since VLR had it, and I assume ZE3 will too. I'd love to have official voices to pin to the dialogue.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
DS version is superior, but I hope this is a success, just because it might make Zero Escape 3 more likely.

I wonder how people will deal with the transition between 999 iOS to PS vita/3DS VLR.

i.e. from no puzzles to puzzles.

Haven't played 999 yet but those puzzles really added to VLR... There isn't much of a game without them. Choosing your options would be a very simplified experience which probably suits modern mobile gamers at the same time.

Honestly the replaying part bit me harder in VLR than it did in 999. 999 with a guide you had to play what, 3 times? Whereas VLR you basically played it 20 times. Jeeeezus.

Yeah, but you could scrub the timeline at will and the text itself has a HyperSpeed Fast-Forward option so you basically never had to experience the same scene twice.

Err, yeah.... about that...
???

Glad everyone is excited for the upcoming release of Zero Escape Vol. 1: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors - The Novel! :)

To help celebrate MacLife did an article with Uchikoshi where he talks about the characters, if you guys want to check it out!

Aw, they spoiled
the 9th man's exploding!!
I remember that being a HUGE shock to me when I first played 999. It's early on in the game, but still... Kinda sad that's out there for all the new people. :/

I saw this a little while ago. For anyone who hasn't played the game yet they sort of hint at a couple of spoiler-ish things (
specifically in the sections about Santa and Lotus
), but nothing major.

Also, great to here from the devs at Aksys!

I feel like the puzzles were integral to my enjoyment of the game. It will be interesting to see how people feel about this novel-only version, but I won't be picking it up.

Liked their page.

And after looking around Uchikoshi's twitter and that IGN article, it sounds like some western investor would have to take on any sort of crowdfunding responsibilities.... Could Aksys do something like that?

I am pretty clueless when it comes to the business world, though. It honestly sounds like it's too simple of an idea to be realistic. >_>

I did too. I honestly think the game is worse if you don't use an endings guide since you're basically dicking around for all of the endings. And if you're redoing the puzzles there's no harm in using a guide to get through them again.

Yep. This is especially true for 999 since only three of the routes are worth seeing, fumbling your way through it and accidentally repeating things you don't need to is a bad experience. 999 has enough repetition and poor pacing on its own that you don't need to add to it.

999 without puzzles is like Mass Effect 2 without mineral mining.

It would be nice if these mobile releases were for PSM or at least Android too. I know the Banshee one will have an Android release but there is no date for that.

My only iOS device is mine old old 3GS, am I safe or is 3GS not compatible? Thanks in regards

EDIT: iOS 5.1 or later is compatible! I'm safe!

I'm really happy this is finally getting an English release, especially for all the people that don't have access to a DS. (Though I'd still recommend playing the DS version if possible.)

I'm quite interested in hearing how certain things are handled in this version, since it does not have access to the DS's unique properties.

Now, bring on ZE3!
