Giant Bombcast - 03/11/2014

I havent listened to the show, but this was a bad week for a guest. With two big games out I want the crew to be super in depth with them. But its whateves, we're getting a multipart Dark Souls 2 series.

Any criticism that starts with 'I haven't consumed this thing, but here's how it's bad' isn't a very salient criticism. As a person who doesn't care about either game, there was more than enough on both. And I'm sure people will be talking about both of them for months (or years in DSII's case) anyway.

And can it be said that I really miss Patrick? Because Dave bores me terribly. He's 20-something going on 60. I don't relate to him at all. He'd be a really great fit on Gamers With Jobs.

edit. I mean Drew, but was quoted, so alas.

Dave?

Between john drake the grim reaper, the escalation of beef in both australia and the science world, talking about dark souls as teenage girls, car fucking, skatesaurus and jack tretton hunting down the shit smearer, this has been a podcast for the ages.

Yep that was pretty great.

Australia beef getting worse (if another New Zealander sends a letter shitting on Austrialia then the beef will be full blown lol)

I don't hate Drew, but he doesn't have much to add to the gaming discussions and his off topic contributions are fairly boring.

Patrick was much better. Oh well, what can you do?

Drew isn't that much of a gaming man. I think he's the most interesting person there, with all the things he does and topics he's interested in but he's probably doing all those things because he doesn't waste his time playing games like the rest of us. So I don't think he's very well suited to gaming talk but he can talk about Formula 1 or North Korea.

At least Drew doesn't force himself into conversations. I won't say that his hobbies are always the most interesting stuff (though a lot of it is interesting to me), but he doesn't really talk much outside of his segment.

I like him, but there have certainly been times where I just wonder why he's on the podcast given how little interest he appears to have in games.

What purpose does someone have being on a weekly gaming podcast when their usual answer to "what have you been playing this past week?" is "nothing"? I enjoy him on Unprofessional Fridays which I presume is the one time of the week he touches a video game.

yeah

as someone who's hobbies are video games, pathfinder, boardgames, and comic books, hearing shit like "went to see a decommissioned aircraft carrier" is incredibly fuckin interesting

My problem with drew is actually that he doesn't speak enough.

I feel like right now it has turned into one segment about drew and themn the rest of the podcast is just the other three guys talking.

There isn't much talk I would consider spoilery, and I am very sensitive to such things. One boss name is mentioned, some mechanical changes are addressed, but thats about it. Most of it was stuff I already knew about, but if you have been on a total, strict 100% blackout, you may want to skip it.

Also, Brad's "skepticism" about the obvious lighting changes is pure madness.

I agree, but I feel like that is because he doesn't play any of the games the other guys are talking about. So, he obviously doesn't have anything to add. He'll try on occasion to ask questions, at least.

I'm seconding this.

Anyone?

I didn't actually listen to the Dark Souls 2 section itself but I think it goes from 1:10:45 to 1:30:25 roughly. Basically after Vinny talking about his old job as a teenager and before the short South Park talk.

And just because I heard it from skimming through, for those that care about the demo vs retail differences in Dark Souls 2 they briefly mention (other people talking about) it at the very end of the Dark Souls 2 talk.

edit: bah beaten.

Also, Brad's "skepticism" about the obvious lighting changes is pure madness.
It's not surprising.

Since a lot of the podcast is off-topic conversations anyway, I like Drew's input on activities that the other guys are never going to take part in. It is a different perspective and usually for me an interesting one.

Drew and his hobbies often spark some of the more interesting conversations and his one-liners are usually gold and genuinely hilarious

Is may just be my perception but Jeff seems to be increasingly dominating the podcast, to the point where he probably talks more than all the others combined. It can be a bit like listening to 'The Jeff Gerstmann Podcast (with guests).

Not really a bad thing though...?

Thank you both, hugely helpful.

Brad and Vinny's Dark Soul's talk is pretty damn hilarious. "He shot magic on me." "It went all over the place." "He staggered me."

It's really hard waiting for April 25th.

:lol Holy shit, Drake with "My mind went straight to murder, I don't know why."

I'm like halfway through the cast and so far Drake has been delightful. It's weird, I never really enjoy him when he's on streams but on the podcast it's totally the opposite.

Also, Drew is right about that early to mid 90's range for pinball games. Creature From the Black Lagoon, Theater of Magic, Arabian Nights, Addams Family, Twilight Zone, Tee'd Off, Whirlwind, World Cup Soccer 94...

The beginning with the audio problems and Brad's mishaps while flipping a coin reminded me of how the Bombcasts were back in the day, for some reason.

I never said there's no difference, rather that people were acting crazy about it when they hadn't even played the game, which is par for the course on this forum. Since then I've been Twitter bombed and had my integrity and intelligence called into question multiple times. In my mind that just further proves my point.

At 15 hours into DS2, I can only think of one area that doesn't look as good as or better than everything I've seen in the previous games, and on top of that it's an exceptionally good game. If that's not enough for the people who are raging about the preview footage, it's their prerogative not to play it, but they're seriously missing out.

I'd like to know too, they didn't even allude to what it does, let alone the name of it. Where art thou, Bradley?

Not sure which ring you guys are talking about -- what was the context of the discussion? May have been DS2's equivalent of the
Cling Ring
from Demon's Souls.

Just a little advice when you are dealing with people on Twitter, forums, etc. Have some class.

Spewing vile, at a third grade English level will not only get you ignored, but people will not take your point seriously from that point forward.

Honestly, I can see why Journalists, Developers, etc treat us like a joke. Go and browse Steam forums, Twitter, Youtube comments for 5 minutes, the average gamer is far below average levels of intelligence.

I'm not calling anyone on GAF out, just make sure you treat people with respect when directly communicating with them.

EDIT: Just kidding, never go to Steam forums. I couldn't wish that on anyone.

Actually meant to post this in another thread, point still stands.
