Dark Souls 2 Lighting changes/Downgrade

it's almost like a jump from a system generation to the next one.

The more comparison screens that get posted, the less excited I get for the pc version. The optimistic in me wants to believe that FROM has been saving all the good stuff for the pc version, but their reluctance to speak about it, and their blatant lies about the console versions gives me very little hope at this point.

Considering how more and more PC users are using dual shock 4s, Playstation controller icons in games are probably no longer an indicator that a game is running on playstation hardware.

Plugging a DS4 into your PC does not magically replace ingame button prompts with images of Playstation buttons.

Is the grass in the final game, by the way? One of the demos I saw played featured very nice interactive grass that reacted smoothly to the player moving through it. I haven't seen it show up in any of the released footage yet but I could easily have missed it.
In Things Betwixed there is grass, it sometimes weep slightly, and the
Kobolds
there let it move when they rush through it. Other than that its static to the player and doesnt react at all. As there is no wind in that area i cant say how grass of that type in other places reacts to wind.

Update: Grass in other places does weep in the wind, but is not reacting to the player either.

So what are the chances of a "Definitive" edition of this game?

Feel free to make up any percentage.

There's a 99.9999999999992% chance of a PS4/XBone port. It would be a good opportunity for them to switch the lighting back on even if the original textures/geometry are lost forever.

I think you guys just need to accept that From just arent very good at optimising/coding their games.

They clearly had an ambitious plan, but didn't have the skill to get it running on last gen systems.

Hell they left Blighttown in Dark Souls 1 didn't they?

I really think Blighttown was only as bad as it was on consoles due to them not being able to implement triple buffering, and instead opting for a double buffered solution for their vsync. The result being that whenever the game dropped a frame AT ALL it dropped to a number divisible by your tv's refresh rate, meaning if it dropped from 30-28 it would instead fall all the way down to 15 FPS in order to prevent screen tearing.

They really should have just given you guys on the console side a vsync toggle in the options menu if they couldn't get triple buffering working for whatever reason, because if you have to drop frames double buffering is just totally unacceptable when your frame target is 30fps.

Why should a company spend time supporting a controller that doesn't even have official drivers?

You can download xinput (360pad) conversion drivers for the dualshock 3 with a 3 second google search dude.

If some random dude on the nexus can do it, what makes you think fromsoft can't?

You do not understand the link you just posted.

This mod replaces the ingame button prompt images with Playstation button prompt images. The game itself does not have the ability to detect if a Playstation controller is plugged into it and dynamically change its ingame button prompts to images of Playstation buttons.

If you plugged a 360 controller into your PC with this mod installed, it would still display PS3 buttons. That is what this mod does. The images are static.

I know. I use it myself. But I wouldn't expect anyone to include Playstation button inputs in a PC port until Sony releases official drivers.

i'll be trading in my current PS3 copy in a heartbeat. Imaging all the death videos that I will be posting using PS4's share function lol

I came into this thread to chide everyone in here for whining about nothing, but good lord. Some of these comparisons are insane.

I still think that the game looks beautiful on my PS3, but it's hard to believe some of the comparisons being posted. I'm glad I kept myself on media blackout or else it would have severely hampered my enjoyment of this game.

.

I understand exactly what I just posted.

The game itself does not have the ability to detect if a Playstation controller is plugged into it and dynamically change its ingame button prompts to images of Playstation buttons.

On the contrary it is actually quite easy to connect a dualshock 3, download an xinput converter, and then drag and drop in the PS3 icons. Trust me: I did it in about 15 minuets, research included!

So do tell: why would this be impossible for fromsoft to do with source code access?

Spoiler alert:
basically all they have to do is highlight the 360 pad texture prompts and hit ctrl+v

You do not. But it's alright, because it looks like you may have realized where you made a mistake.

We are discussing the Dualshock 4, not the Dualshock 3. And the issue is not dragging and dropping icons. The issue is Dark Souls 2 detecting the presense of a Dualshock 4 controller. Replacing iconography has absolutely nothing to do with the controller you actually have plugged into your PC.

Yes I do. Read my other post (that I made before yours) about the xinput converter.

There is no way for the game to know that you plugged in a PS3 pad since it looks like a 360 controller from the game's perspective. That Xinput converter is simply emulating a 360 pad.

Find me a single PC game that can tell the difference between a 360 and a PS3 pad.

I think this is the point he's having trouble understanding.

One word.

Drivers.

EDIT: Okay now I've totally lost you. You're implying that because there's no game that can differentiate between a ps3 and 360 pad, from couldn't have just rigged the PC build up specifically for that event with DS3 prompts and drivers (which is not complicated at all)? That seems like a non sequitur to me....

This is getting slightly off-topic, but I've recently played a game that had me select the type of controller I was using in the options to display either keyboard prompts, Logitech buttons (numbers), the PS buttons (shapes) or 360's buttons (ABXY) accordingly.

That said, making this process automatic (or available at all) is extra work for a relatively minor feature, so I'm sure From won't do it.

The community will step up and you'll be able to replace the default 360 controller button prompts with whatever icon set you desire, I'm sure.

If they're running an event only on PS3 (it's TGS FFS) they don't need to differentiate between the two as the controller is going to be constant.

If it wasn't for the marketing Bamco/From kept emphasizing, there wouldn't be nearly as much drama. People would have taken the final (console) product to be about what you'd expect from From. Good art direction, fantastic panoramas, inconsistent textures environmental geometry, messy framerate. In fact, the improved lighting that -is- in the game would have likely drawn some praise.

Playing Dark Souls at 30 FPS when it was first released on PC, then at 60 FPS when Durante found a way to unlock the frame rate, it was like a whole different game.

I will never go back to 30 FPS Dark Souls, let alone playing with drops below 30 or massive screen tearing.

DS2 is lucky when it hits 30 fps on ps3. Its more like 25 fps on average. I brought this up in the official thread and everybody acted like I had some sort of agenda or something, like I was trying to bring DS2 down. I've played DS and DS2 back to back, and DS2 performs much worse than DS. It's really disappointing.

Hahah really?
Man this is just bad, worst part is the game is still selling like crazy.

I think that's some of the point of this thread. A good chunk of those sales happened or are happening based on screens and bids of a different build than retail. I get why people are mad.

The lack of the lightning system and the loss of a core mechanic that sounded awesome is a bust... but..

Can anyone who adored Demon's and Dark Souls comment on the quality of the content in Dark Souls 2?

If they bait and switch the visuals like that, how can I trust them to have crafted a game as solid as their last one?

Even an official comment recognizing the reduced quality of the retail product would greatly increase the integrity of the developer here..

The lack of outcry from the media is baffling.

"False advertising is okay as long as you like the game" - Enthusiast press

Really the same thing happened with infinite and no one gave a fuck, so to see them brush this under the rug too isn't exactly surprising.

Foliage? You mean the green painted wall texture? The right one as ACTUAL foliage. It looks SO much better, it's not even worse. The left one, to me, looks even worse then DS1 and Demon's Souls.

I suppose I should clarify - I prefer how it adds to the colour palette, gives the scene some nice contrast. By comparison, the original scene just looks boring and washed out, despite having better details.

Dark Souls is my favorite game of all time, and though I'm only a dozen or so hours into DS2, I am happy to say that it is excellent. Very different atmosphere, but the gameplay itself is just as good as it has always been, if not better due to the more involved stat system.

PC version might get the lighting, but look at how well that area is designed in the right hand gif. Look at all the debris, the grass, the mountain range...they aint gonna add that in with an ini hack for the PC version. Its gone, and its not coming back.

Doesn't bode well for PC version with stuff + original geometry missing.

Judging by reviews/comments on the official thread here, people seem to be genuinely enjoying it. There are those who aren't sure of the changes (enemies no longer infinitely spawn if you kill them too much) but this and the other changes actually seem to have made the game more, not less, challenging. I guess the worries of it being 'dumbed down' to appeal to a wider audience were unfounded.

It shouldn't be. There has yet to be an article about the left stick issue with the DualShock 4 and it's been widely reported by users across a ton of forums and display units..but I hear you. It's a joke.

Dark Souls is superior to DS2 in nearly every visual category. I'm loving DS2 but the game is ugly as sin pretty much every area I've been to.

Oh come on now, there are really nice looking areas. It's just too bad that the majority make it feel like I am playing a PS2 game (almost, and no hyperbole either).
The gameplay matters the most, and it doesn't really fail in that regard (except for the major recycling in enemy design), but much of the good ole Souls atmosphere was DOA.

PS: There's way too many fucking bonfires in this game. There's even one right next to a boss (shitty boss, but still...).

So far, yes it looks amazing.

If you simply turn a blind eye to all of the areas that do not in any way, shape or form. Some of the more interesting levels look ugly as sin.
The game flows like this: ugly area > great looking area > ugly area > ugly area > ugly area > amazing looking area > ugly area etc.
You can bet that the majority of the ugly areas are only ugly because they were initially designed to be dark. Now they just look like shit, unless you use a torch.

I'm okay with how the game looks. It certainly doesn't look bad and I can see how going from previous build of the game to this one can upset people, but at the end of the day its not like we're playing a steaming pile of crap.

I, like many, am willing to double dip for a PS4 version. Hopefully that actually ends up happening and doesn't take too long. :x

I can chime in I am greatly enjoying the game. I understand why some don't like the enemy extinction system, but it actually increases tension believe it or not. You know enemies are a finite resource. You don't waste souls, you don't risk losing souls farmed from a certain group of enemies. DS2 feels far more like you've -must- learn to play well. You cannot get lazy and grind your way to PVE victory.

Combined with the overhauled stat system the game is pretty damned strategic. Plus I think the area layouts and design are really fantastic. It somehow feels a bit more like Demon's Souls again; it really seems they were trying to go back and take a critical look at what Dark Souls may have lost from Demon's and combine the two.

I'm far enough in that I can see the logic of the torch system and think it would have been fantastic rather than annoying (since sconces stay lit permanently, you're essentially mapping out the world from darkness to light).

Does even exist any PC screenshots?

There are some shots on the gmg and steam store that are well above the PS360 build and feature the real time lighting, but given how namco handled the marketing of the PS360 build...yeah...I wouldn't put any stock in them.

What happened to the video posted earlier??? The one with the amazing comparisons, Youtube throws an error.
