And the PS3 is a Sony console. Why wouldn't someone just buy it on the PS3 if they don't currently own a PS4? Why would someone go spend $400+ to play a game that can be played on the console they already own?

I agree that Infamous will outsell the prior two entries in the franchise, but that doesn't mean it'll be a system seller. The Tomb Raider game on the PS4 sold fairly well, but I don't think there's any evidence to suggest that it moved consoles. The two statements are not one and the same. Additionally, the potential bump in sales may be diminished due to the PS4 still being supply constrained.

I just googled sales data on BF4 and it showed that the PS4 version lagged behind both the PS3 and 360 versions. Can you link me to the sales data you found?

I don't think it is safe to assume most MGS fans would jump to the new console, especially if they don't already own it. Why spend $500+ two play the same game that can be played on the console they already own??

NPD Top 10 rankings show the order of best selling SKUs. PS4 appearing before PS3 shows that it sold more.

See, I'm not really sold on the idea that MS has March won because of Titanfall. You have ~2.5million PS4 owners clammering for a new AAA game, and it is Infamous. It's a great title to pitch up against TF. It will be close again is my estimate, and if X1 wins, it will be by a razer thin margin imo.
How did you come to that number?

Good morning all. Here are some YOY and Gen over Gen comparisons. The 3DS and PSV numbers are guessed individually, but correct combined. Aren't you glad you're not in the dedicated handheld business?

I disagree. Splinter Cell is basically a MS power house, and MGS shares a lot with it.

Maybe now, as it appears Kojima has taken heavy inspiration from it. But historically in the series I can't say I agree.

I also think people have a very keen idea of what MGS is. Thats not going to change overnight, and what most outside of the hardcore will be basing their decision on.

Ill tell you right now, as soon as people saw Big Boss with a horn in his scalp, I'm sure plenty of potential buyers tuned out with "Same old MGS nonsense". And this opinion is coming from a big fan of the series.

What are peoples opinions on Vita sales if it had Minecraft exclusive instead of 360. I think it might have saved it in the UK and US.
I think one of the reason why Minecraft is so popular on Xbox 360 (besides being a good game) is that so many people already owns a Xbox 360 for other reasons. The game might not be a system seller on its own, but it sold a lot because many people already had a Xbox 360. I think it would take more than Minecraft to make the Vita a system seller.

We see something similar on the WiiU. Games like New Super Mario Bros U and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze sold (and will end up selling in total) a lot less compared to what their predecessors sold on the Wii. I think that is because that those games arent system sellers on their own, while with the Wii, many people had already gotten a Wii for other reasons as well.

This is the second time I'll post this, since I'm actually at work right now and I just checked numbers again.

I'm looking at the district numbers for the titanfall bundle. Since launch, across 13 stores, less than 40 of those bundles have sold. And none of the regular x1 have sold at all in that time.

There's almost 350 spread over the district. A few more will probably sell this weekend, but seriously. The over-hype assumptions I'm seeing in this thread are bizarre. If you think its going to have some massive blowout, I don't know what up tell you... But speaking from actual sales and stock data, our stores are seeing none of the hype and momentum I'm seeing assumed to be there.

In fact, our patterns are much similar to Amazon right now.

X1 clearly had a bump in February though while you are quoted as saying sales in your district had plummeted. So maybe not exactly on par with NPD?

No. Fucking. Way.

I'm hoping Sony increased production of the PS4 with the launch in Japan. Based on their sales over there I'd imagine they can start allocating more to Europe and US. If that ends up being the case there is no way the Xbox will consistently outsell the PS4 in the US. March I'm 50/50 on but beyond that I don't see Xbox taking the lead.

And the PS3 is a Sony console. Why wouldn't someone just buy it on the PS3 if they don't currently own a PS4? Why would someone go spend $400+ to play a game that can be played on the console they already own?

Because it wouldn't just be getting a Ps4 for MGSV. They'd be getting a PS4 for the best version of MGSV, inFamous, the best verison of pretty much every multiplat (arleady out and in the future). The PS4 being only $399 will also help a lot, as it's a lot easier to swallow than $499.

Personally, I think the X1 will come out on top in March, but only because of PS4 stock being too low and X1's being stacked up high on store shelves everywhere (aren't they still selling through their dec. stock? lol).

If the stock was equal (say 1 million each), the PS4 would easily come ahead, but that's not the case.

WW, it won't even be funny, the PS4 is absolutely going to steamroll the X1 in March.

Tomb Raider is not platform-exclusive. InFamous is. And anyone could wager InFamous has more brand popularity than Tomb Raider these days; she isn't at the 1/2/movie heights of popularity anymore.

I personally think it will pull ahead in March and stay there.
That's that 'shroom talking, and you know it.

When you act like the Vita doesn't exist so does the general public. If you want things to change awknowledging the platform for once might be a good start.

78.94% gen over gen decline for handhelds.

I'm not sure how to describe this other than "catastrophic".

A while back I made a thread about my observations in public over a period of time. I used Starbucks as an example since I go there frequently.

It was very clear that kids were walking around with handme down smartphones for their mobile entertainment needs vs vita and 3/DS.

If quite to fun to see statistics backing me up. In the US, I pretty much expect this To be the last handheld generation that has any real sales figures and that is clearly the just 3DS. The vita could disappear tomorrow and no one in gen pop would give a shit.

At some point Nintendo is going to have to expand their franchises or risk dying off.

love on your sleeve
Not to mention Tomb Raider is a year old port...

NPD Top 10 rankings show the order of best selling SKUs. PS4 appearing before PS3 shows that it sold more.

Battlefield 4 launched in October for last gen though. PS3 versions of multiplatform games have seemingly been the worst selling versions so far in 2014 but I guess it would still have the overall lead from the big day one sales in October.

I think Thief and Lego Movie were the first simultaneous multiplatform crossgen release we've seen. Lego sold more on older platforms for obvious reasons. Thief is a bigger indicator of what we'll see in regard to "AAA" games and the last gen/current gen split.

It definitely saw a bump, I'm not arguing that at all. But the momentum to maintain something like that just doesn't seem like a good bet. I can tell you that last month we definitely sold more then in January, but that best buy placed no new orders for replenishment for more than the next month. The forecast so far is we'll still have the tf bundles into April. Take from that what you want.

hows that compare to actual software sales of Titanfall?

Vita should have been a combined effort between Sony Mobile and Playstation. I know a couple of guys at The mobile division that were pitching it hard. They might have been right all along

I don't know what to think anymore. March NPD can't come soon enough, this debate will finally have a conclusion and we should get a better idea of where the X1 is heading. I also think Titanfall won't have the huge effect people are expecting (I'd say the X1 will do around the same as this month, maybe up to 300k or so), but I honestly have no idea what to expect at this point. Really wish we knew the X1s WW sales though.

No chance in hell that Infamous is more popular than Tomb Raider. The last TR game sold very well (even though it didn't meet SE's expections). The last Infamous game sold 1.65M worldwide. It's not even comparable.

US Handheld TTM sales (missing NDS and PSP for the last few months, but they wouldn't be enough to stop the decline.)
Really makes me wonder why people seem to be locked to the idea that there will be a handheld successor to the 3DS.
I still think there'll be some sort of 3DS successor. There won't be a PSV successor obviously.

The Champion, Playstation Vita.

Omg my prediction about Vita being under 15k was right but I also predicted the 3DS to be under 100k. >_<

Those Vita sales though, damn. I can't believe people can call the Wii U dead when this thing is still on the market.

The situation in January

PS4:
1138K November
863K December
271K January
=
2272K 3-month total

Xbox One:
909K November
908K December
141K January
=
1958K 3-month total

And this

Ok, then

Xbox One tie-ratio: 2.7
PS4 tie-ratio: 2.1

Total software sold Xbox One - 5,286,600
Total software sold PS4 - 4,771,200

The Xbox One total should exclude digital sales, since, using the tie-ratio provided back in December for retail + digital games (2.9) and the sales up to then (1,817,000), we had 5,269,300 games sold overall back then.

But we also know retail only sales

This means

January Xbox One software - 486,000
January PS4 software . 571,200

So, how's the situation in February?

PS4 February 2014 - ~ 268,000
PS4 total up to February 2014 - ~ 2,540,000

Xbox One February 2014 - 258,000
Xbox One total up to February 2014 - 2,216,000

PS4 tie-ratio up to February 2014 - 2.18

Xbox One tie-ratio up to February 2014 - 2.75
Xbox One software total up to February 2014 - ~ 6,094,000

Then

PS4 software February 2014 - ~ 766,000
Xbox One software February 2014 - 772,000

You really can't use your store data to extrapolate what X1 sales for March would be. Did you looking at your store data think the X1 would sell this much in Feb. Using retail data from one chain is just not enough to form a definite consensus.

It's a corpse in NA, but strong sales in Japan continue to sustain it.

Okay, that looks to be the case for Thief.

But COD, the Lego game, NBA2k14 and Assassins Creed all sold better on last gen consoles. So I'm not sure much can be said of a pattern.

Well it undermines your argument with MGSV. It looks significantly better on the next gen consoles and has been marketed specifically on those platforms. Same goes for BF4 which all but hid the current gen version whereas AC4 and COD had extensive previews on the PS3, 360.

Nor is using no indication of it selling out anywhere is enough to form a definite consensus of it possibly pushing the console to where it needs to be.

Wait, 12k in the whole February month? Is that even possible??? Isn't there a big chance that retailers are not going to sell vita anymore if It's selling that bad? Makes Wii U look like the champion, king of kings ATM. Poor vita :(
