Risen 3: Titan Lords announced (Piranha Bytes)

An explanation from where the leaked images come (I deleted them because I wasn't sure if they were PC Games exclusive Game-Informer-like 'digital scans')

Please do not post any screenshots or artworks regarding Risen 3 for the time being!

Explanation: These screens were given to us and one other fansite on the condition that we release them not before the 25th of Febuary, 16:00 CET. We also received one exclusive artwork (just for us). A typical and in no way unusual embargo which almost every publisher for every game uses in his press related work. Nothing to complain about. Just like it happened a hundred times in the last 8 years and like it does on other sites of our network. And until now, it has always worked because every member of the staff knew the meaning of the word "internal".

These pics were posted by Don-Esteban - like always - in our internal forum so that the staff can prepare (create galleries, upload pictures, write news, etc.). And shortly after that, they were found on the web. Including the exclusive artwork that no one but us received. So the obvious conclusion is that one of our (now former) staff members took these pictures from the internal forum and (directly or indirectly) spread them across the web. Now former, because Don-Esteban just removed almost everyone from the staff, except a few core members that now have to do all the work alone.

Worse however is that we can now go to Deep Silver and basically explain to them that the trust which we tried to build in the last 8 years is worth squat. That any attempt to give us information beforehand and work closely and eye-to-eye with us is futile. Because we are not dependable and cannot be counted upon. That working with us on a professional level is not possible and that we are basically the mindless nerds that many claim we are.

Now, the pictures are out there and we all know that the damage is done. But for what little good it'll do: We will try to keep our end of the bargain and maintain the embargo! Any pics or references before the date mentioned above will be deleted!

On behalf of the entire remaining staff of the World of Risen, I would like to sincerely thank the ex-member responsible, should he or she read this post. You caused us a lot of work (now and in the future), made us look like idiots, got a lot of other, honest members removed from the staff (because we cannot know who you are) and sabotaged our relationship with Deep Silver for years to come. So, from the bottom of our heart: Thank you! Thank you oh so very much!

I think more people should play Gothic 3. It was complete mess at launch, but few years of modding turned it into pretty damn fine game.

Seriously, publishers need to chill the fuck out about these things. The world will keep spinning, even if you don't control every tiny bit of information about your "top secret" game.

I doubt Deep Silver cares that much. It's just that they won't won't trust the fansite in the future.

Agreed so hard. The version on GoG comes preloaded with all the fan made patches as well, so you can just start playing without any hassle.

Awesome, I actually enjoyed Risen 2. One of the few games that did the whole pirate theme really well. Too bad they're dropping it with this game.

This comes from World of Risen:

Combat system:

There will be a prologue during which you can experiment with higher abilities. After that, you continue on level 1.
Blocks work against monsters.
At the beginning, you already have an evasion somersault and short range teleport to escape combat.
Big armours and swords as well as firefalls and lightning strikes.
Voodoo magic will probably also be available.
Unconscious enemies can be plundered.
The will be party members again who will help you in combat
Combat system with four different actions and rudimentary combos.

Gameplay/Story:

DLCs will offer more content.
Roasting meat etc. will happen in a separate window again.
Gameworld: Primarily middle european but also mediterranean and tropical regions.
The world is modelled by hand.
Swimming will be possible.
Seperate loading zones like in R2. No free roaming with out loading screens.
Several factions (probably three) from which to choose.
Already known are the “guardians” which resemble the paladins from older games.
New enemy: The shadows (undead which rise from skull caves).
At the beginning of the game, the main character’s soul will be devoured by a might shadow lord.
After that, he will have a soul value which can develop either towards human or demonic.
New hero, the character from previous Risen games will still play a starring role however.
Food will still be swapped to “provisions”.

Technical:

Once again forced Steam and no modding tools.
Game will be developed for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC - no mention of next gen consoles.
Engine will be the same as in Risen 2 with some polished graphics - but the problems of the old engine (like the stiff character animations during dialogues) are still present and do not seem up to date compared to competing titles like Dragon Age: Inquisition or The Witcher 3.

Probable release: August 2014

Frankly the first word that comes to my mind so far is "underwhelming".

I hope the game will be better than Risen 2.

Gothic4 wasn't as bad as Risen2, imo.

Interesting...so they're dropping the whole pirate thing I guess?

Please do. Risen 2 had an awful setting².
Risen 1 was a lot closer to gothic. I'd still like if they would get even closer to gothic, in terms of atmosphere. To this date, Gothic 1 had the best atmosphere I've ever seen in a game. The world in itself, just made "sense" and everyone behaved like that. Gothic 1 as a whole, was a pure magic moment for me.

It's part of the whole press/publisher relationship thing. The press wants exclusive deals, the publishers want good reviews.

Yup, I gotta agree. And they're already talking about DLC... seriously?
Yeah, if they are trying to create interest with DLC early announcements, well they achieve the exact opposite with me. I instantly lose interest when DLC is announced before the game is even out.

This whole thing is strange. It's the kind of announcement I would have expected before the recent RPG renaissance. I'm not surprised that Risen 2 turned out the way it did but I figured the next game would get back to basics.

Which is another downside for me, as the "change" of setting was the only thing I liked more about Risen 2.

Agreed. I approve of most any non-standard RPG setting.

Risen 2 was incredibly underwhelming to me, and that new info released here makes me think they're going in the wrong direction, unfortunately.

If they ruin this one, i'll give up on their games. Good thing many others are bringing great rpgs.

Indeed it is nice to have so many great RPGs on the horizon. I just hope that Piranha Bytes can keep up and doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

I don't expect much out of this game. Each game they make is worse than the previous one.

Gothic 1 was a masterpiece.
2 was great but not as much as 1.
Night of the raven and gothic 3 were a mess.
Risen was more or less on the same level as 3.
I didn't touch Risen 2 but what i hear of it makes me think it even worse.

Don't listen to this crazy person. Gothic 2 plus Night of the Raven is the pinnacle of piranha Bytes' production, and NotR itself probably the best expansion ever made for a RPG.

Risen was more or less on the same level as 3.
Yeah... Madness.

What? Night of the Raven elevates Gothic 2 into legendary status. Add-on (pre-DLC) executed perfectly and masterfully.

Gothic 3 is really enjoyable with the Community Patch. Very far from being "a mess".

I hope Risen 3 is good - the year of the RPG has been long overdue. I actually liked Risen 2, so I'm sad that the pirate theme is gone.

Will the new player-character be player-designed or preset? That FAQ earlier in the thread doesn't seem to say.

I love Risen so much I day 1'd Risen 2 blind. I hated Risen 2 so much that I'll wait for a $5 sale on R3 if I bother to get it at all.

Then again Pirahna Bytes seems to alternate between weak game and strong game so if the pattern continues then this might be good. Either way taking a big wait and see on this one.

This is interesting. Wonder if we even see the day when a Gothic-like game is released without a generic brown moustache hero.

Coming August 2014 to PC, PS3 and X360.

EDIT: Press release.

Risen 3: Titan Lords – Piranha Bytes Return To Their Roots With Classic RPG

Piranha Bytes, the creators of Gothic and Risen, return to their origins with a new, classic RPG. Risen 3: Titan Lords pulls the player in to a hand-crafted role-playing world full of rugged charm where every decision changes the course of the story. Risen 3: Titan Lords is set for release in August 2014 for the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft and for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system as well as Windows PC.

The key element of the cult Gothic series as well as Risen is the vivid world and the freedom to explore it. The world of Risen 3: Titan Lords will be diverse, authentic and full of life, providing the player with an authentic, classic RPG experience.

“Like a carpenter with a hand-crafted piece of furniture, we put together the story, the characters and the landscape until it all fits and the player has the possibility to discover things all around the place. You can try out and find things that others might not. Exploration is the key to our game”, says Bjoern Pankratz, Project Lead at Piranha Bytes.

The world of Risen 3 is abandoned by all gods and suffers from the Titan Wars when a new threat rises from the soil. A young warrior is attacked from the shadows and deprived of his soul. He sets off to reclaim what is lost amidst the darkness that is spreading throughout the world. The banned Mages could be powerful allies on his quest. To get their help, he needs to find the Mage sanctuary on Taranis, also known as the Island of Thunder. Protected by the Guardians, the Mages search the mines of Taranis for crystals loaded with magic energy. Will the player join the Guardians to get in contact with the Mages? Or will he choose one of the other guilds in Risen 3 to reach his goals?
