It begins!

...Que Microsoft panic acquisitions.

I was just wondering how long before MS announces their project (Worst case: exclusive to Xbone, requires Kinect because reason, requires Live Gold because reasons and whatever else)

My only issue is that with the Oculus Rift, everyone is saying you need high res, and 60fps. And the scene is being rendered twice!

You need a beefy rig for the Rift.

I imagine a lot of low-tech Star-Fox looking games for this on PS4.

People are hoping for a $200 price tag? I reckon it will be double that

Eh, Sony surprised me with the $399 price tag of the Playstation 4, so I won't be surprised if their engineering wizards manage to pump out a VR product for a relatively marketable price.

It looks stylish and the tentative specs seem good. It seems further away than i expected, and in all honesty, talk of needing the camera, move, and morpheus is destining this to failure...as if it wasn't destined for that anyways. I don't doubt that it will work; i doubt that the lineup can justify the cost. These things have to become open platform if they want to succeed. It's like buying a TV for one system.

Oculus is shooting for a $300 price point and has essentially the same specs (current prototype at least; don't know about DK2/CV1 until tomorrow). Unless Sony is going to subsidize the headset (they might), then I think it will be around $300.

Doesn't need the move, there is a reason they put a light in every DS4.

Remember that E3 before the 3DS price drop when everyone said the Vita's $250 price point was perfect and they couldn't believe Sony was doing something so sensible for such a great piece of hardware?

Let's hope you guys are right. But judging by the pricing of their other head mounted displays it won't be cheap. If it was then OR would have serious competition (assuming the tech is decent). Don't forget you have to add in the camera price too if it is a necessity

Oh it was built to be used with a camera for tracking; the camera is essential. Hmm maybe they should include the camera with the system then to avoid repeating the awkward situation they created last generation where you had to buy two or three separate peripherals to play the games built for Move.

Too many extra peripherals needed to make software development worthwhile.

The one thing that semi surprises me is how purist they're being about it and about the requirements for VR. I half expected some dawdling about what is really necessary for good VR but they seem to be taking it by the horns.

Between having to buy a Sony headset for PS4 and a PC-supported headset (wherever that ends up coming from at the end of the day), this whole "VR Revolution" is going to be an expensive proposition.

Morpheus -

"In Greek and Roman mythology, the god of dreams. He was one of the sons of Hypnos (Somnus), god of sleep. Morpheus sent human shapes of all kinds to the dreamer, while his brothers Phobetor and Phantasus sent the forms of animals and inanimate objects."

Hmmmmmm........

I am on board for VR but this thing is going to live and die by its price and this is where I worry they will slip up.

Nevertheless, exciting stuff.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Their other headsets use two tiny displays with extremely high dpi paired with complex optics.
There's no comparing the two approaches in terms of price.

Actually 95 fps.

And we'll have 4k in no time, because resolution is so important.

The price point will definitely reveal whether Sony considers this a legitimate aspect of the Playstation brand, or whether they're doing this just because. Peripherals already have a ton of things going against them, so price is definitely a HUGE factor. If they want this to be anything more than a bullet point, it's got to come at a price point that's actually somewhat marketable.

DDD? Is the display autostereoscopic like the 3DS? Or did they just put their active 3D glasses lenses in front of each eye and have one display?

I suppose they're planning on doing 2D to 3D conversion with TriDef.

There's only so cheap you can make a VR headset right now and still have it be good. I imagine it will be priced similarly to the OR.

If gaming is all vr headsets in the future I won't be gaming. Glad you guys are pumped though hope its big for Sony.

Gaming is already tough as an adult with a wife and kids. Going 100% sensory deprivation seems like a bad idea. My wife hates when I have a headset on.

Disappointed this doesn't have a price, release window, and a supported games lineup. Is this something they show off and then it disappears like other tech companies do? Is it gonna be another gimmick like HOME? I want more concrete info like Apple does in their conferences

That is the kind of stuff released at E3, to consumers. This is for developers and some media. This is the wrong conference for that kind of information.

Except neither of those things have anything to do with what I wrote. We already have a recent example (from Sony, no less) of how people are unwilling to pay for something that requires extra work from content providers and requires one to wear glasses. Now, after Sony went all-in on 3D and completely failed, we expect a high number of people to buy a bigger version of what was a hindrance for 3D (and possibly needing to buy a separate peripheral for it to work)?

Except the reason why 3d failed wasn't wearing the glasses, it was that the content wasn't really any good; or even just good enough. Most 3d TVs made everything look like low res cardboard cutouts, a vast majority of movies weren't filmed in 3d but convert post production adding to the issues and finally you had discomfort from active 3d glasses causing headaches, nausea, etc. It wasn't having to wear glasses but the tech. If anything the last 3d fad just cements that the market is ready and wanting the immersion VR can offer.

I truly believe the naysayers just simply have little imagination. The difference between 3d and VR is huge; thinking something like VR will fail because people 3d failed and people wore glasses, is like saying people won't go to movies because they rather see flesh and blood of stage theater.

Edit: btw I don't mean to come off like I am picking a fight or acting like an asshole. I guess we just don't understand each others way of seeing this one situation.
