Sounds really disappointing! Not only did they not show any content for this deal, the device itself still seems in the prototype stage. All the reports said it was further along than Oculus Rift. This unveiling dispells that notion.

This unveil was a major let down. If the device wasn't ready to be shown, they shouldn't have done the reveal now. Cone on! Not one game demoed for it? Even OR has done that!

I feel very hyped right now, not that much about Morpheus but just that VR is emerging more and more. Even if it starts as a more gimmicky accessory like the Move of Kinect, the very fact that we'll have VR goggles will skyrocket a whole new scene that's already emerging from OR and I think will eventually, alongside cheaper and better tech, bring VR into a lot of homes.

Almost feels like someone just showed me a working prototype of a hoverboard.

Wow looks and sounds neat. Looking forward to the impressions.

But WTF at those game slides. They are using the Vita cutout style thing. I thought those were Vita related projects for a second.

I only hope that they fired every last motherfucker that worked on the ergonomics of the HMZ-T1 and started afresh with this one.

Because if the comfort factor on Morpheus is anything like the comfort factor on the T1, bail the motherfuck out now.

But I'm tentatively and cautiously optimistic. That strap/support/thing looks unnecessarily hardcore... so hopefully that means it's comfortable.

The visor itself actually looks pretty neat - if it had oculus style straps, it'd look pretty boss.

I wonder how Sony can move foward with this? How much time/effort would it take for game studios to build a gamome +VR technology...
Account for new view shape and a new type of head-based camera control and most any game can be made compatible without a giant shift.

So I guess Sony leapfrogged Oculus Rift.
In what way? From what little we see it doesn't seem more advanced, and seems further from release.

My only issue is that with the Oculus Rift, everyone is saying you need high res, and 60fps. And the scene is being rendered twice!

You need a beefy rig for the Rift.

I imagine a lot of low-tech Star-Fox looking games for this on PS4.
Highest possible resolution and frame rate aren't mandatory. Of course they're better, but that's always been the case and most developers don't lose sleep over it. With a PC between a PS3 and PS4 in specs I've spent plenty of time playing games like Skyrim or Just Cause 2 in 1080p 3D at a good frame rate.

Thought they had games demos set up at GDC?

The prototype just had headset with a move controller duck tape on....lol

This will generate a lot of press for Sony in the following days, from gaming sites to the mainstream press.

This will definitely be good for sales.

Oh it was built to be used with a camera for tracking; the camera is essential. Hmm maybe they should include the camera with the system then to avoid repeating the awkward situation they created last generation where you had to buy two or three separate peripherals to play the games built for Move.
As opposed to the awkward situation of packing in hardware and making customers pay for it that has no appreciable software support on the horizon?

I'm guessing by the time this is actually ready to come to market, they have plenty of time to make the camera accessory readily available. And anyone that's going to be legitimately interested in something like this isn't going to balk too much over additional accessories.

I love gimmicvks so Ill probably try it out. but one question. I cant currently see 3d effect on TV or games. Is this a different tech or does it work the same? I want to be able to see the effect.

I'm not seeing any specs in the OP. They really didn't give any hard numbers besides 1080p?

VR done correctly is absolutely not a gimmick. It's the kind of game changer that we haven't seen in decades.

This is the GDC. Games developers conference. Theyare doing this to get devs to work on mamaking games for it.

May I have a cookie?
The one thing that semi surprises me is how purist they're being about it and about the requirements for VR. I half expected some dawdling about what is really necessary for good VR but they seem to be taking it by the horns.
Wanted to post just this!
I'm loving the more purist direction Sony has been taking in recent years. Even if it doesn't end up being profitable for them, RESPECT.

Sony has a huge history of failed accessories.

This will probably happen with this.

Child please.

Demos tomorrow, and the kit looks pretty far along even with them calling it a prototype. Looks further along than Oculus aesthetically.

Didn't they show a God of War demo or was that Eurogamer's live feed joking around? They said it was first person Kratos dismembering people, or were they just dreaming?

Too many extra peripherals needed to make software development worthwhile.

Thankfully, Sony doesn't seem to be in the business of shoving unwanted peripherals on people's faces at the cost of everything else with the Playstation 4.

They can easily bundle the camera with the VR Headset as needed. This is a complete non-issue.

Like the look of it, hope it isn't too expensive I do want VR in my household so I hope Microsoft has something cool coming out or else I'll end up with either this or Occulus Rift.
If gaming is all vr headsets in the future I won't be gaming. Glad you guys are pumped though hope its big for Sony.

Gaming is already tough as an adult with a wife and kids. Going 100% sensory deprivation seems like a bad idea. My wife hates when I have a headset on.

Won't be for along while, this will be more like the wii-fit platform, it'll have a limited amount of games exclusive for it with some compatible with it.

That is a goddamn sexy piece of hardware. I don't quite understand how it's worn (does the ring part sort of sit on the crown of your head?) or how comfortable it would be, but damn. Kudos to Sony's hardware design team.

I was hoping Sony might go for a platform agnostic device in order to reach a larger audience. Not sure the PS4 market is big enough, even with stellar system sales so far, unless it ends up being vastly less expensive than most people here are assuming it to be. It certainly looks cool though.

1080p
90 degree FOV
1000 Hz 360 degree positional tracking
wired to a breakout box

Honestly, it's almost exactly like the Crystal Cove prototype from Oculus from CES, except PlayStation exclusive. Give the hardware hackers a week though and I'm sure they'll get it to work on PC!

Going to be interesting if Oculus improves anything from Crystal Cove for DK2/CV1, and if Sony would match.

The more accessories you need the more ridiculous it becomes. It's not just Sega CD, it is Sega CD games that require 32X (and sometimes the Activator).

Will they even bother? They seem so invested in Kinect.

Kinect is part of the VR plan according to the leaked Fortaleza roadmap from 2010.

The other name for Fortaleza Glasses was "Kinect Glasses."

Looks interesting. The design has a "generic sci fi" feeling to it that I can't help but to love.

But after the move I will wait at least half a year before I buy any new Sony accessories. Specially if this costs more than $200 they'll have to show me that they will support it for more than 3 months

Let's hope you guys are right. But judging by the pricing of their other head mounted displays it won't be cheap. If it was then OR would have serious competition (assuming the tech is decent). Don't forget you have to add in the camera price too if it is a necessity

The Vita is still a sensible price for a great piece of hardware.

Sadly, I think the point I was trying to get across and failed was that its scary how quickly momentum can shift in this industry. I don't even bother predicting what will and won't be successful anymore.
