Project Morpheus - Sony VR headset prototype - unveiled

Sounds really disappointing! Not only did they not show any content for this deal, the device itself still seems in the prototype stage. All the reports said it was further along than Oculus Rift. This unveiling dispells that notion.

This unveil was a major let down. If the device wasn't ready to be shown, they shouldn't have done the reveal now. Cone on! Not one game demoed for it? Even OR has done that!

Uhhh It's a prototype and Sony said they don't have any game for it yet and they want other dev to be on board. That's why they are at GDC. It is for developer. Why do you think it's not ready to be shown?

The hardware looks and sounds great, even if it is potentially quite a ways off from being on store shelves. I'm still more interested in the Oculus Rift though simply because it isn't tied to a console but if Sony announced PC support further down the line then I'd definitely be on board.

We end the Year Of Luigi with Sony saying "Asymmetric Gameplay"

This may have been answered but what does this mean for games locked at 30fps? No Morpheus support? Sub 1080p with 30fps?

Or just cut and/or simplify features when VR is active.

Fantastic reveal from Sony.

They had to get devs on board, but once they did the cat would have been out of the bag quickly. So a concise and technical but still sleek reveal at GDC is perfect. Then you show some tech demos at E3 and get devs ready for the big launch in 2015, while the hype builds from this very moment.

If it's true that the picture quality is better than Oculus, this thing could be amazing. PS4 makes it a much easier sell in the living room than a PC. It sounds amazing, my hype has gone through the roof and I don't even want VR.

The one question I have is what kind of graphics we can expect and what we'd accept. Would we accept a regression to PS2-era graphics so that the PS4 can create two HD images and do the extra processing required? Is that what we should expect?

To be honest, if I'm moving around virtually in Res Evil 4 or driving in GT4 then that'll be good enough for me. That's my level of expectation - PS2 era graphics but in 720p+ in both eyes and at 60fps. Come on Sony, deliver.

I still don't believe VR will ever properly take off in this form
There is not 2x 1080 screens. Its a 1080p total. Half a 1080p screen per eye.

It shouldnt take much more processing than a single 1080p image.

VR is really a thing?

It seems niche.

Use your imagination. VR has the potential to be the biggest thing in computers since polygons.

30 FPS doesn't do a very good job of tricking your mind into thinking that you're in another place which is the whole point of VR. And it might give you a headache or get you sick.

I think when it is released realistically it will be able to do

- 1080p 60 fps in 3d
- movies in 3d
- movies in 2d

Sony's focus will be less on 3d objects and more on immersion in current game design

I also think like kinect most games for this will only work for this while other mainstream games will only let the viewer use it In tv mode

dev kit or crystal cove (which is even not the best Oculus have internal)? If he compares to dev kit it´s not really hard to be better.

Maybe we will get some impressions compared to Valve´s VR demo tomorrow. Both could/can be tested on a gamedev event i bet there are alot of people who will have tested both after tomorrow. And Oculus talk is in the next 1-2days too.

It was revealed at the Game Developers Conference so developers can make games for it...

Tying a VR headset to a certain kind of hardware is ridiculous anyway.

Or are we expected to buy 3 VR headsets for xbox, playstation and PC?

That's like buying 3 TV sets.

It's the recording/editing/ mixing that matter for stereoscopic sound. We've had the ability to listen to binaural audio on traditional headphones for decades now

.

Yeah, but the real questions how effective their technology works with a speaker system.

Except oculus rift is close to release. This will probably release after oculus retail

This is pretty much like the Last Guardian. Its never coming out.

Yeah, it's just a prank they're playing on developers because they don't like having third-party support.

Keighley loves gettin' his lips on some corporate dick

Hey, don't tell me you wouldn't blow Shu or Cerny if they walked up to you now and Shu with his beautiful smile winked at you as Cerny softly spoke "I want watch Shu fill your mouth" you wouldn't kneel straight away?

God some people are just really weird.

Eventually VR headsets should be seen in the same light as a monitor or TV. It is a display device that should work with everything. We are not close to that point yet. As it is we need these competing devices to push the tech forward until (hopefully) a standard can be achieved.

For now, let the VR fanboy wars begin!

Latency values?
Head tracking and positional tracking accuracy values?
Low persistence?

A bit worrying that they have chosen to leave those values out and flaunt the rest even though it's a work in progress, those are arguably the most important bits of info

Yes because thats clearly what I meant. This thing is not coming out anytime soon. It doesn't even look like its close to being a real product. Alteast several years away and will probably deliver a lot less than promised.

Sony mentioned low-persistence. It also has 360 positional tracking unlike the Crystal Cove (because of lights on the back) with a seemingly higher quality stereo-camera.

Well I would hope not but Sony and MS just love their proprietary hardware 'solutions'.

Thats why its called a prototype

They (either Sony or the live blog author) said Kinect doesn't have the fidelity for VR (the refresh isn't high enough).

Isn't that based on tracking limbs by bouncing IR of them and then processing it? If you put IR lights on a headset, like the controller has, you in theory could cut that time down significantly if all you're doing is position tracking of the lights and not a skeleton.
