Project Morpheus - Sony VR headset prototype - unveiled

One potential problem is how to market VR to the masses. Most people who've tried it rave about it, but how do you get that message across in a TV ad? It's a bummer Sony had to close so many of their retail stores, it seems like it could have been a good place to provide people with demos of the tech.

Sony mentioned low-persistence. It also has 360 positional tracking unlike the Crystal Cove (because of lights on the back) with a seemingly higher quality stereo-camera.

Oculus have not settled on the LEDs and camera as a final positional tracking solution. That was just built for CES

For those that still haven't accepted that VR is a force, just try the Boiler Room demo for the Oculus Rift (from the animated movie Spirited Away). Even on the first Oculus dev kit, it's one of the coolest things I have ever seen! Just watch the little sootballs carrying the coal and you will be a believer! I haven't had anyone leave that demo unimpressed with VR!

Point is, try it first, comment after!

Will wait to see the actual prototype on someone's actual head to make an oppinion...

Still, always very excited to see VR finally coming through. Well worth the 20 years+ of wait.

I think what sony should do is to align Morpheus as a replace your tv for gaming device where you immerse yourself with this rather than use your tv. This will act as the virtual viewing device for the ps4

I would love to try VR but unfortunately there is no way my shitty small country is getting Demo Units anywhere.

I have to see it for myself to become a believer.

The more accessories you need the more ridiculous it becomes. It's not just Sega CD, it is Sega CD games that require 32X (and sometimes the Activator).
The accessories you need are precisely the same no matter what platform you're talking about. What sequence you get them in is an overly silly attempt to criticize for the sake of one-upmanship, even for you.

There is not 2x 1080 screens. Its a 1080p total. Half a 1080p screen per eye.

It shouldnt take much more processing than a single 1080p image.

Well in that case I was right at saying 720p+ per eye, as 720p is just under half of 1080p. But thanks for the clarification.

Sounds like everyone is waiting until tomorrow for hands on time (?) There'll be some long queues I guess...

Finally, we've come to Content. "At Worldwide Studios, we have a really good team." Sony's own studios will "seed" the VR landscape, but they need other devs, hence they're here at GDC.
This makes me hopefull it's a 2014 release with Sony leading the software charge.
They *want* to be first to market with VR. Also it seems like they are out of the business of announcing products a year+ ahead of time.

They are working on 4k OLED rift and sony is talking sub 1080p LCD no strobing.

One get community support to mod back older games, one does not.

Easy to see witch one to pick if you want a good VR experience.

I'm all for VR and I see content is a bold point for them (though last) and I fear that will be the biggest issue facing the success of VR. It won't work in majority of games, it'll be used in very unique content that will need to be heavily marketed for a chance.

Well I would hope not but Sony and MS just love their proprietary hardware 'solutions'.

Gamepads are not particularily expensive. A VR headset is gonna be several hundred dollars. Consumers will buy "VR-free" consoles if Sony/MS do not open up in that regard, that I'm sure of (assuming VR takes off).

You're crazy if you think you are getting 4K rift any time soon.

Seriously tho, I have been lurking for a while(got my account activated this month damn it took time), and I remember someone putting up that hillarious gaf gif with morpheus explaning Junior members and Gaf in overall...... Sony probably used GAF for their name!

Use your imagination. VR has the potential to be the biggest thing in computers since polygons.

30 FPS doesn't do a very good job of tricking your mind into thinking that you're in another place which is the whole point of VR. And it might give you a headache or get you sick.

Yeah, 30FPS is going to make people puke.

Also, even if the res is only 1920x1080 across both eyes, you still need to process stuff like geometry twice.

This will very rarely turn into a game that's worth playing outside of the novelty of seeing familiar environments in VR. Proper VR conversion is a big deal and developing a game with VR in mind is the best course of action.

I agree that PC will be the place to go for the best VR simply because it is a very new and evolving technology that will require high end parts as resolution improves. Not to mention how quickly independent deveolopers are taking to VR. ...but I'm still glad to see Sony giving it a go. VR as a concept is too good to limit to one platform.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
is it actual VR if it's only one display?

Don't you need two images?

You can put two images on one display.
Hell, unless you've been living in a cave for decades you've already seen four images on one screen.

And here people are saying they don't want to pay more than $150-200. Guess what my dev kit when for? With taxes, shipping etc $400. Now guess what 4k OLED will cost. Hey I'll probably buy them both but the bulk of the consumer that are console only? Yeah I answered that myself.

Yeah. Powering a 4k display at 90Hz or there about would be expensive. not to mention the cost of a headset with a 4K OLED screen.

I mean...haven't i7/triple Titan systems be shown to struggle to get to 60fps at 4k with Crysis3?
