They are working on 4k OLED rift and sony is talking sub 1080p LCD no strobing.

One get community support to mod back older games, one does not.

Easy to see witch one to pick if you want a good VR experience.

4k!!?? Holy fuck, let me take 3 thousand dollars out of my ass and build an amazing computer willy nilly.
OR will be so mass consumer, it'll be OP.

..but cry so much I wish I had some
Pretty much how I feel. Similar to 3D/3D glasses... I just don't want to strap a huge thing on my face.

That is also how I feel. When I play for an hour with 3D glasses I get tired of it, can't imagine having that whole thing strapped to my head for hours of gaming every day. Also, am I the only one who doesn't feel like having to move my head around nonstop to look around and prefer to be sitting comfortably in my couch my head resting back, looking straight at the TV when it comes to gaming? I don't see people really embracing this thing for standard gaming, maybe for a few short experiences, and for most people I don't think it will be enough to warrant a purchase. I also don't think a lot of experiences lend themselves to VR, and using a VR headset simply as a screen is useless too.

I have a hard time convincing myself to get this, and I wasn't more excited about the OR either. I think people see this as the next big thing to reinvigorate gaming, but I doubt this will disrupt the gaming landscape. As it has been shown with motion gaming, people prefer to play their stuff the good old way, on a TV with a controller in hand. If anything, imo this is the motion controls of this gen.

You're crazy if you think you are getting 4K rift any time soon.

It's worse than you think. Judging by his "sub-1080p" crack about Morpheus, he thinks he's getting 4K per eye with Oculus.

Did you just make up sub 1080p and LCD ? Because sony didnt mention sub 1080p or the screen. There were 3 pages where people quoted the same slide which mentioned 1080p. Its straight up manipulating the truth by saying Sony was talking of sub 1080p especially

Plus one will work on consoles which is the business sony is in

Won't games programmed for Oculus Rift have high chance of being ported to Morpheus, especially with PS4's architecture? So they aren't really competing, especially with proprietary plug-ins. More like, they would enjoy a symbiotic relationship.

This is the beginning of a revolution. Expected move by Sony, but that doesn't mean it's not a good one. Incredibly exciting for not only the gaming industry, but the entire world.

If it doesn't make me sick... I'll think about it... but if the kids, and wife don't show interest I'll most likely pass. I just don't see this being mass market. OR or Sony's.

Honest Question:
Are the people that are most excited about Sony's VR headset not into PC gaming at all? .... I mean, why be more interested in this than Oculus Rift, which is being developed on an open platform, the PC? Is the tech better?

I own a PS4 and have lots of games on Steam. I'm just honestly a little confused as to why some people are really excited about this announcement...

The PS4 camera is better?
PlayStation Camera
60fps @ 1280x800 (16.7milliseconds added input delay)
120fps @ 640x400 (8.3ms added input delay)
240fps @ 320x192 (4.2ms added input delay)

Kinect only captures at 30fps (33.3ms added input delay)

Add image processing and rendering delay on top of that and it adds up. Higher framerates are obviously better for high speed tracking of the LEDs, less blur on each frame.

I think because this is the first and probably only console solution for a while

You will have a high FOV regardless of whether you move your head around. Also, in early games you'll probably be fixed in a chair and be looking around as much as when you're driving a car.

Humans have an incredible capability of being excited about multiple things at once.

Well I own both and I'm excited. A major platform holder getting behind VR is great for it, even for those people who don't own Sony products. I'd feel the same if it was MS or Apple or Google or any other major company with a big mainstream presence.

More competition, more options, chance of Japanese developers being on board, another chance at VR becoming mainstream, and might be easier to use.

That said I'm buying oculus day 1!!

Simple, I don't have a Windows PC and I don't honestly want one (gaming would be the only reason I'd want one and a console is a cheaper compromise for that).

Its means great thing for Oculus owners also. I really do not understand why people cannot see that.....

So you are into VR at all you should be HYPED about this....

Oculus will never be mainstream. You have to jump through too many hoops. With this anyone can get into VR. Just buy the headset and PS4. It open VR to a ton more people.

The thing is will this be good enough?

This is a console centric forum. This was bound to generate some excitement now that it's not PC only.

Sony will produce better VR games.

Sony were making a big emphasis on console ease-of-use and having the complete ecosystem (hmd, controllers, camera, software).

You answered your own question. There are a lot of console players that have no interest in gaming on a PC. I have a ton of games on Steam too, but I prefer to play on a console. It's all a matter of preference. Not a big deal really.

It's all about your options man. Many here on GAF haven't(due to different reasons) embraced the PC yet.

Or people understand that, by being able to target both PC and an additional console, more devs are likely to give VR a shot, which can accelerate the adoption of the technology.

Fair replies. Thanks for the opinions!

I am interested to read the heads-on impressions from developers and media tomorrow; that'll be fun.

And that quote by Keighley - Whoa!
