Honest Question:
Are the people that are most excited about Sony's VR headset not into PC gaming at all? .... I mean, why be more interested in this than Oculus Rift, which is being developed on an open platform, the PC? Is the tech better?

I own a PS4 and have lots of games on Steam. I'm just honestly a little confused as to why some people are really excited about this announcement...
I'm in the same situation as you, I'm just excited that this has the potential to reach mass markets and won't be considered a "nerdy computer thing."

Look forward to seeing more, but I'm not really sold on these VR sets as true gaming devices. I guess I'm still scarred by Virtual Boy. :p

For me, its more about having that standard hardware connected to it. I don't want my VR experience dependent on ever increasing computing demands. Normally I can work around PC games enough for this not to be an issue, but the requirements of VR means the sky's the limit for that.

I won't touch a PC for gaming. I like the ease of consoles. Bring this thing on!! So excited. At 43 I can't wait forever for this stuff to come out.
Why do people who game on PC always want to convert console gamers is my question? Let me enjoy this.

Tokyo, March 19, 2014 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced the development of “Project Morpheus” (Morpheus) − a virtual reality (VR) system that takes the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system to the next level of immersion and demonstrates the future of gaming. SCE will continue development of Morpheus looking towards a future commercial launch.

“At SCE we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play,” said Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios. “Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we’re looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators.”

Morpheus enables developers to create experiences that deliver a sense of presence - where players feel as though they are physically inside the virtual world of a game. Presence is like a window into another world that heightens the emotions gamers experience as they play. Morpheus features a visor style head-mounted display and works seamlessly with PlayStation®Camera to deliver a unique VR experience right before the player’s eyes. Inertial sensors built into the head mount unit and PlayStation Camera accurately track head orientation and movement so as the player’s head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates naturally and intuitively in real-time. Furthermore, in supporting games, the player can use a PlayStation®Move (PS Move) Motion Controller as an object, such as a sword. Morpheus will reproduce the player’s hands and sword within the game so the player feels like they are physically fighting off enemies with their sword in the virtual world.

Morpheus adopts 3D audio technology uniquely developed by SCE. In addition to sounds coming from front, behind, left and right, Morpheus re-creates stereoscopic sounds heard from below and above the players, such as footsteps climbing up stairs below them, or engine noises of helicopters flying overhead. Sounds that players hear change in real-time depending on their head orientation, creating a highly realistic audio environment within an immersive 360-degree virtual world.

Along with PlayStation Camera, Wireless Controller for PS4, and PS Move, Morpheus will deliver immersive breakthrough entertainment experiences to gamers through the PS4 system, leveraging SCE’s expertise across key areas for VR – including display/optics, audio, tracking, control, ease of use, and content.

Developers will be able to create Morpheus content for PS4, a platform which has sold over 6 million units only after 3 months and a half of its launch, and is continuing to show strong momentum. The Morpheus dedicated SDK is currently under development and will become available when ready.

During the Game Developers Conference 2014 held in San Francisco from March 19 through March 21, attendees can visit the Sony Computer Entertainment America booth to have a hands-on experience with Morpheus, which will be exhibited for reference. Attendees can enjoy exclusive technology demo such as EVE Valkyrie (CCP), a multiplayer dogfighting shooter that uses virtual reality to give the player the sense of being a real pilot in an EVE Online spaceship, Thief (SQUARE ENIX Co., LTD.), which allows players to explore the dark shadowy world of the stealth action title, “The Castle” (SCE) that shows various VR interactions utilizing PS Move, and “The Deep” (SCE), where players can observe the waters from inside a shark proof cage.

Its means great thing for Oculus owners also. I really do not understand why people cannot see that.....

So you are into VR at all you should be HYPED about this....

I'll end up getting both eventually, Rift for open source indie demos/games with injected driver support, and the PS4 one for incredible first party content (and potential next Gen Home) but most importantly that binaural audio. That's what really makes me the most excited for Sony's. They each have their own strengths.

Why did console gamers constantly say that Oculus was going to fail without Consoles?

Same reason.

Agh, now I'm conflicted. No idea if I'm going to buy Oculus' VR headset or Sony's. Right now, I do have a pretty sweet gaming PC, but I do not have a PS4... so in a weird way, it might be cheaper to go with Oculus' solution. What do, Neogaf???

Than Oculus? A company that does not make games?

Well, it helps that Sony has one of the best array of 1st party studios on the world. I'm all for indie development, but it's only Sony that can pump 50 or 60 million dollars on a VR game. There's no other publisher willing to do that BECAUSE VR is not viable yet.

Sony is taking that risk because they are a literal part of this revolution.

Will the oculus use it's own gpu/processor/mem and basically just plug into the pc to play games or will it use the pc hardware to render games?

Or people understand that, by being able to target both PC and an additional console, more devs are likely to give VR a shot, which can accelerate the adoption of the technology.

With the amount of Xbox memes and gifs posted here, I'd say the majority posting are not seeing that. I think the excitement is there as vr is now on a platform they are invested in. But also its another feather in PlayStation console wars hat

Cause Sony is a huge company with better R&D (they are working with NASA)
(Oculus Rift is made from off the shelf parts, Sonys VR is made from custom made parts)

Sony has some of the best gaming 1st party Studios.

Sony has marketing money to spend on.

Sony isnt just talking about gaming software.

Get the one that comes out earlier?

PC hardware, of course. The plan is to eventually process everything directly in the headset but that's quite a few years away.

Agreed. Sony will have to dish out a lot of cash whether its buying third party support or developing their own games with the tech.

PC hardware that will likely cost 2000 dollars to 3000 dollars to run VR comfortably, if "some" people here are showing off that Oculus is trying to make a 4K headset.

I don't understand what that has to do with my post.

You have likely years before these things are on the market.

Of course the Rift has to use your PC's hardware. The PS4 headset requires it to be plugged into a PS4 so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

if it takes $2000 dollars to do VR 'confortably' then PS4 VR is completely impossible. With the greatest discounts in existance, the PS4 cant come anywhere close to $2000 dollars worth of parts and no 'coding to the metal' is going to bridge that gap.

So you are talking out of your ass.

Oculus uses their own tracker, and while most of what's in it is off the shelf the components are by no means low quality. Form factor is another discussion entirely but for pure performance I don't see them having too much trouble matching Sony.

I'm talking about hardware that's required for a 4k headset that some OR fans have been talking about.

If you've paid attention Sony did not mention anything regarding 4k.

As much as I expected this, I can't help but be excited for this with the backing and market reach Sony has
