Project Morpheus - Sony VR headset prototype - unveiled

Remember: Last year during the February reveal, we didn't even see how the PS4 was going to look.

We already know what this device looks like, in a form that seems pretty fleshed out already without being rough around the edges. It looks like a consumer product.

I don't think it's that far off. There's numerous developers that haven't released things in years that should have stuff ready by year's end (Media Molecule, Zindagi games, etc).

i'm sure they understood the requirements of regular old 3D too, didn't stop them from showcasing it with crysis 2 on PS3 as it chugged to single digit framerates, resulting in the kind of migraine inducing experience which would've sent james cameron back to 35mm.

it doesn't matter how well built the headset is, it won't make the PS4 any more capable an engine for its requirements.

Oh for fucks sake! Please holster your console hate boner. The PS4 is more then capable of running great VR.

You know the Xbox One controller has 2 IR lights that's are tracked by the Kinect right? Regarding polling rate, I don't know how it differs from skeletal tracking versus the IR lights in the controller.

I do know it has ir, but I've seen no example of it tracking depth. If if can then I was mistaken, but I do know the 30hz is a camera limitation.

I've got 2x Hmz-T1s,
so i'll support this Virtual Headset.
But i'll wait till i know whats is supported (titles, numbers) to justify the purchase when it arrives.
Support for 3D is one thing.
Doing Virtual Reality gaming, is another.

This will be for the diehards, who'll probably only get a handful of titles supported for it's lifespan. So, i'll wait and see.

Poor mans Rift, its freaking Move on your head
If this isnt below $100 its a flop

Addons dont sell, look at Move

Most Rift games won't have the kinds of artists and asset creation quality as Sony first party studios. If you've used a Rift before you'd know you don't need bleeding edge graphics to create a compelling experience. With good lighting and decent texture work you can create very good environments for VR.

So my question is does this have to be 60fps to even work or will a lower frame rate just be a worse experience like it is with a TV/Monitor?

It should really be over 60fps, between 75-90 for low persistence. 30 just won't work. It doesn't cross that threshold where looking around feels natural. 30fps in VR is much worse than 30fps on a TV or monitor. Even 60 on an LCD panel has very noticeable smearing when moving your head around quickly.

I fear they gonna release a gimped VR experience if they choose to lauch it with the PS4. People in this thread are drooling like kids, but most of them doens't understand that VR requires a lot of hardware resources to deliver.

Yeah takes a ton of power to do a 1080p image. LOL

your VR experience is dependant on ever increasing computing demands, whether you want it to or not. nobody with a PS4 spec computer is looking at VR tech as something they think they're going to get a great experience out of without shedding a few notes on whatever beastly circa late 2014/2015 GPU that the VR experience will guzzle down and still ask for more.

sony are demoing this thing with thief - a game which barely scraped 30FPS in monoscopic 1080p on PS4. this should set alarm bells off for anyone who has had concerns of a platform holder pushing VR as a selling point for their suboptimal proprietary device, resulting in a miserable experience for many and the wholesale shunning of the tech for another decade.

for VR to succeed on PS4, it will have to be an exercise in modesty. the PS4 won't be able to keep up with the high end stuff that people will be buying maxwell cards to run, and i hope sony can accept that and cultivate a decent library of unique titles of limited technical complexity, rather than attempt to punch above their weight and drown VR at birth in the eyes of the mass market.
so basically create the wii sports of VR? Seriously I couldn't imagine Sony wanting anything more as it would mean a lot of money for the company. they will release quality software IMO...We saw the journey image and I think many people will be fine jumping into worlds of that quality and ps4 should be more than capable of handling it.

Remember people went out and both wii for for wii sports where u played with stick figures! If the experience is compelling graphics aren't as important, even less if interactive media is a part of the device day one, and yes porn lol...it is inevitable..

I'm kind of disappointed that they're not using OLED since it's been established how much of a benefit OLED's fillrate without costing more pixels.

I mean, price had to be a concern but I hope their LCD tech is fancy enough to make up some of the difference.

Not actually that important
VR was a path I always saw Nintendo taking. Shame Sony stole their thunder before they get to do anything. The contrast between the two companies initiatives is surreal.

What the hell are you talking about?

Nintendo leads first, always.

Sounds early, honestly. They have a lot to nail down.

This will likely turn out to be a niche thing for the PS4, with a more robust product and support out the gate for PS5. I'm still happy they are doing it, just keeping my expectations in check for the near future.

30 FPS could cause nausea and headaches in a large group of people pretty quickly, not really something you want people to shell alot of money for.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

You're expecting Pong in VR, but we've already seen ( the admittedly pretty easy to run) Trine 2 running at twice the resolution in 3D at 60fps. (downsampled to 720p per eye because of HDMI limitations)

Cool technology, but I do wonder how many developers will support it...
Well, one of the major points that was presented by Valve and OR during this years Steam Dev Days conferences was that pre-existing games generally don't work in VR. Slower, smaller experiences based around VR are infinitely more impactful than something like Half-Life 2 being ported over to VR. I think this will actually work in our favour; developers won't need to throw down US$100m budgets creating "Battlefield VR" or whatever - stuff like The Witness is cheaper to make, and actually works better. I suspect any major developer could put a small team on making a VR game, and not have to sell a million copies for it to be well worth the time.

That seems like a cool device... Though VR headsets don't excite me much to be honest, all tech has to start from somewhere so I'm glad we are seeing this, but I don't think we are at a point where we can actually have a enjoyable experience... Not even talking about having to wear a helmet to play (because this bothers me very much, I can barely stand headsets for chatting) but even things like moving in the world for instance. I know they said you can use the move controller, but imo that goes directly against the immersion/presence is king mantra.

I would be all over this if we were at a point where we could all have an omni treadmill in our homes so we can walk and run to all directions, coupled with a super precise and low latency full body capture, and some sort of haptic feedback from the game (using compressed air or whatever to give any sort of feedback).

But like I said, all tech must start from somewhere... Though the last time I used a VR set was almost 20 years ago and the 3d was barely better than what snes could pull of in Starfox... Perhaps now I would find the tech much more impressive/immersive...

A bad frame rate on your TV/Monitor isn't a pleasant experience, but it doesn't actually make you sick. Even at 60Hz, the DK1 has unbearable motion blur. Valve and Oculus have fixed this by using low persistence on an OLED panel at around 90Hz but the panel in Sony's prototype is LCD so I'm not sure what their approach is.

Not really, I have tried GT 540M and Rift, no problem with it. HL2 and many Unity3D demo tech at 60fps.

Hmm I think this need to be its own entity. Umm I trying to say this needs to Come out next Gen so it can be the main focus.... aasrrrrgh nvm I can't find the words to explain what I'm talking about

As with Sony's camera, I'm pretty sure all the depth stuff is handled through the Kinect. It tracks the position and orientation of the controller which is how they do the motion controls with the controller in Dead Rising 3.

Would get a 2nd job for this, and be willing to pay $599 US dollars.

But seriously, I've been imagining what it would be like to be "in" these video game worlds since the 70s (those would have been some blocky-ass worlds lol.)

Not a peripheral. A quantum leap in gaming, unlike the empty promises of motion gaming. I'm so ready.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
One thing sucks: in the worst case, we'll "have to" buy an Oculus Rift for PC, a Sony VR set for the PS4, and a Microsoft VR set for the XBO.

That's the shitty thing about new technologies. Standard wars.

Wat? The specifications mention that the headset will include a surround sound like setup.
the surround sound thing is software I think, sony will make software for developer so they can record 3d sound, ps4 will handle the processing and output it to normal headphone. Its like dolby headphone software I think, you can look for demo online and only need normal headphone to experiwnce them. Its pretty awesome imo. If all vr game include that, I can see how it will be super immerrsive for player.

Nintendo leads first, always.

I so wanted that to be real. Well now it is. But not by Nintendo. Late as always to the hardware party.

If they've only just begun then they are WAY behind.

They normally just buy the company that's been working on it.

Well alright then, but 360 compatibility too? That has me scratching my head a bit.

Yep. Had me scratching my head a bit as well.

It's concerning they're not talking about refresh rates, low persistence, or what exactly sets this apart from just being a 1080p Rift DK1. BY FAR the biggest hurdle VR faces is simulation sickness and they're not saying what (if anything) they're doing to mitigate it.

Joek post?

How is it?

I am taking their info and saying whats best
For business.

They cant sell this for $250 dollars
Their is no need to rush this out
Let it be given creative time from devs
drop it in 2018 and make it compatible with PS5 even, they cant just push this as a big thing this gen.

You really think they can buy OR now? OR wouldn't allow it.

Yeah Trine 2 is possible, but people is expecting the next Killzone or GT with the Sony VR.

Yeah takes a ton of power to do a 1080p image. LOL

It is not the same as rendering a single 1920x1080 image FFS!
Having 2 view points means doubling the geometry processing load (thus it takes more power to do).

It is also not like a game just being at 1920x1080 is all you need, a high framerate is a must.
