Project Morpheus - Sony VR headset prototype - unveiled

I think people are overestimating the impact of API differences, by the way.

Basically, if the HW is this similar, the process boils down to
  1. Getting integrated (& potentially predicted) sensor data (rotation & location) *
  2. Querying the camera matrix offset for each eye *
  3. Rendering each eye perspective
  4. Applying the final distortion transformation *

So that's 3 (groups of) API calls (marked with *). Building an abstract interface on top of that for your engine is really a miniscule effort compared to all the other work you need to do for VR, which applies to all HW platforms.

I wonder if it was a buy out or collaboration offer...
And I wonder where this rumour of an offer even comes from. I never heard of it before.

Looks promissing, now make a Sword Art Online game and it'll sell millions.

Even though I'm always very excited with new technology, Oculus was interesting when I tried it (it's promissing, but I wouldn't buy it as it is... I think people are getting way too much excessively excited), not sure I'd buy the 1.0 versions...

Imagine how many different companies are going to release their VR heasets before one defines the real standards... I don't want to be the guinea pig... really hope this is going to evolve fast, real fast.

This and price will be the most asked question to Sony dudes until it releases, have fun answering ;)
Honestly I thought just having it confirmed would be enough to satiate me, I felt like as soon as they announce it, they can't really cancel it, but now I really want to know when it's coming. Yesterday I guessed Q4'14/Q1'15, I still believe that, despite seemingly everyone thinking it seems further out.

Well on one end, its a bit disappointing that there's nothing particularly innovative about it. Its pretty much where Oculus are at, although this does have 360 degree tracking, so that's pretty cool.

On the other, its probably a good thing that this will likely end up very close to what Oculus produces. Should make devs quite happy and lead to more games being made for both platforms.

Do they even have it though? I thought everyone was stuck on DK1, do some devs get prototypes to use in-house?

EVE felt like an obvious one, I was surprised we heard yesterday, but they'd already specifically mentioned their exclusivity didn't extend to consoles, so it was coming.

I'm sure CCP has access to more. They demoed Crystal Cove with it, right?

(And yes, CCP always qualified 'on PC', but I thought that could be read either way...meaning alternatively that it would be exclusive 'on PC' too ;))

I am feeling confused now, all of a sudden my anticipation for normal games like Infamous and Destiny has just taken a nose dive.

All I can think about is being in a virtual world looking around, even if its a Ps2 / Ps3 remake of any game that would fit with a good VR experience...

Am I crazy or is anyone else just feel like they been hit by a train ?

Sony has to hire both Banderas and Lawrence Fishbourne now. At E3 two leather couches..two pills....one VR.

Let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Some of us have been extremely excited about VR well before we got word Sony was involved with it. ;)

The VR war has truly begun. Should be called "VaR".

I was expecting more Sony. Specs, release date and ideally a demo. What we got is basically them saying we are working on it, hey look a prototype with tentative specs subject to change.

The design of the thing itself is awful. White and round while the PS4 is black and with straight lines.

I know their OLED pro monitors and their HMZ-based medical products, as well as their high-end cameras. But none of their products, consumer or professional, I'm aware of has a low persistence screen. That's why I'm asking

High end Bravias have black frame insertion mode but they use AUO MVA panels.

You're just excited about VR. That's normal.

That said, except for an announcement, nothing has changed yet... so enjoy infamous and destiny later this year ;)

I'm still excited about Metal Gear and InFamous at the weekend, but I do wonder about long term. Am I going to care about a standard TLoU2 over some little five million dollar three hour horror thing Sony could put out? Who knows.

I think over time we'll know exactly what to expect from each, Sony is totally right, VR is a different medium, and I think we'll just naturally balance our desire to consume both.

The quote I was referring to made it really clear they could be on consoles. I can't find it though, it was posted the other day.

It's playable tomorrow at GDC with a bunch of demos.

It's a prototype. They announced it to get developers excited and so that they could get support from developers.

Specs aren't final. Design isn't final.

It's a prototype they announced, so they'll have content from developers when it commercially launches.

There's hands-on demos at their booth when the show opens. So we'll get impressions, and I hope at least some photos of what it looks like on someone's head.

No, you are not crazy. The question is only, why didn't you feel this way when the Oculus Rift was unveiled?

Sony should have bundled the camera with every ps4 since vr can't work without it

The standard retail box will undoubtedly have the camera included. It should add relatively small cost to that bundle. Of course, separates will also be sold if you already have the camera and for replacements etc.

lets just assume the product is roughly occulus standard..... how much would people be willing to pay ?

me 300 :p i have a feeling it will be pricey

Depends, add some horror games with Move support and I'm there.

On the other hand, I already got the PS4+PSEye bundle and two Move controllers from my PS3. Therefore for me the entry price point will already be at the most possible minimum.
All I need is a Morpheus+game bundle.

I just hope this will be released within a year or so. Btw Sony should start including the PSEye with every PS4 as soon as they can afford to sell it at the current price of the vanilla unit.

An interesting thing is that David Braben mentioned that there are several different headsets hitting the market. I would say VR is really happening.

"The camera is inflating the cost somewhat, why is that in the box?"
"Oh it's for our... V... Ummm... you can use it to log-in with your face, that's something, right?"

Also, not everyone is going to want VR, it shouldn't be in the box. The people who don't care shouldn't be made to spend cash on a device to allow VR.

I'm still trying to understand the appeal of this VR stuff. Why would I want to sit at home with a box on my head that makes me unaware of my surroundings? Someone could break into my house, steal all my stuff and abduct my loved ones and I wouldn't even notice.

No, you are not crazy. The question is only, why didn't you feel this way when the Oculus Rift was unveiled?

The first occulus sold as a dev kit sounded like a dev kit - call me weird but that's how I viewed it, as a thing that indie devs played with....

Never seen any reviews of any game or any talk of a product for me as a consumer..

And as a console guy the thought of mucking around with configs and pc settings is not my scene...

With Sony, it feels like it will be in my local game shop for next Christmas....Does that make any sense ?

Is that really a concern of yours?

Well it could be 18 months post PS4 release before this comes out, so it would have gotten ignored and pissed people off like Kinect is. Also not everyone is going to want this.

Its very unlikely to look better than Crystal Cove, given what we know about them both.

I'm well out of the loop. What about Crystal Cove will make it most likely to look better than this?

Repeat after me. "It's a prototype".

Not every PS4 gets a VR headset connected to it. So there will probably be a VR set + camera bundle.

Has this been posted yet?

Trivia: I had suggested to Sony that they try to hire Palmer Luckey before the Oculus kick starter.

I think it will work out fine though. Separate VR development teams for a closed platform and for an open platform. Good times to be a gamer.

To be quite honest I don't trust it to be supported. I'd rather have a more open approach to development, such as with Oculus Rift (or really any PC based VR equivalent).

Double standards everywhere.

This Sony unit is a dev kit.

There is no consumer model finalized, no date, no price, no nothing.

No game reviews.

Oculus actually has people(not just devs) playing on it already, with all sorts of games and experiences. And there is definitely talk about a consumer product, pricing and general timeline.

Anyways, sorry to get on you, but lets be real - you weren't interested because you thought it would be some 'PC' thing before. So you ignored it and didn't care about it.

And that's fine. Just glad you're excited about it now.

I'm very excited for this and I'm wondering how much it will cost.

Sony's HMD is currently 999€ is the Sony store:

Two 720p OLED's and 3D support, virtual 7.1 surround. The specs are very different, so idk...

Game Developers Conference

Everything that dev needed to hear was described today, which was the whole point of the presentation. To give public and devs description of the system and to attract new game projects. In few hours we will get impressions from showfloor demos.

E3 is in 3 months [+ Gamescom 2 months later], we can accept consumer news then. With little luck, sales will start in October-November, with EVE Valkyrie, Witness and DriveClub as launch games.

I can't wait to have more details on this thing. It could be huge. I think this is the kind of thing that could resonate with the mainstream as much as the Wii, if priced right. The Wii was basically a realization of what everyone had been thinking "the future" would be for video games at the time, so when it became available to the public, everyone wanted to try it. This, coupled with the right software, could create another "science fiction becoming reality" moment with people, and I really think they're sitting on a goldmine with this. I know the oculus rift came before, but I trust Sony is more likely to truly make this a mainstream product. Your move, Microsoft.

Impossible. They'd surely steal you PS4 + VR HMD as well, so you'd notice.

EVE is being published by Oculus. You wont see it til the Oculus launches, if at all.

HMDs use micro-displays, which are very expensive, and they require complex optics to view them, which are very expensive.

Morpheus will be a reasonable consumer price.

If it all? It's announced.
