Yoshida: DriveClub not delayed for VR & will not have VR mode

So what the fuck is going on then?

I tried this game out last year and there was *nothing* wrong with the visuals. Certainly would be the best looking next-gen driving game on the market even as it was.

Whats the confusion?? They delayed it because the standard was not wherer they wanted it, what is so hard for people to understand about this?

Hype for both dropped a tonne. Basically, driveclub is probably a longway away and Vr support is still a heavy concern and today didn't change my opinion of it. If one of the most obvious use of Vr is racing and their flagship racer doesn't have it. Better support from other studios doesn't seem promising. Sony already has questionable support of their own tech so this doesn't help.

QUOTE=Pazuzu9;105110573]Yeah that seems like a strange thing to say - racing games (and anything cockpit-based where you're sitting down) are the least nauseous VR experiences for me.

Agreed.[/QUOTE]

Hmmmm....not sure what to think now.

Perhaps it was because DriveClub was 30fps?

Perhaps with VR the image quality/lighting technique was too much?

I think this is a good thing. I would have loved to play a PS4 racing game on Morpheus, but perhaps Wipeout will scratch that itch? :) Please?

Wait.

Was this delayed because Yoshida felt ill from motion sickness?

That sounds awesome!

Wipeout HD Was delayed at last minute because Zone mode was not passing epilepsy tests so they had to nerf and tone down the dynamic equalizer effects in the later (faster) zones to make it less crowded and eye tearing.

It's really for them to decide when the best time to release is. In this age of pubs/devs rushing broken games out of the door I'm more than happy for them to take their time and release when they think it's ready. As long as they aren't trying to pull a Gran Turismo 5 or anything.
If there were deal-breaking design issues, I can understand.

But no joke, when I played this last year(before the PS4 came out), the game looked amazing. I played Killzone as well that day and I was honestly more impressed with DriveClub, graphically. I think it would have dropped a lot of jaws even if it had been released 5 months ago. So for me, the 'we need more time to make it look better' thing isn't a great excuse to hold out on their fresh customer base for as long as they have.

Evolution hired Chief Game Designer on GRID2 last year to work on DriveClub. He left this month.

For a short while they also had the studio head of Headstrong Games. He is now working at Sumo Digital.

The game must have been pretty fucked back in oktober 2013 then.
I understand small delays of a few weeks or a few months, but right now it looks like we're talking about a 1 year delay.

I'd be in the dick
It doesn't sound like he's completely ruling out VR for DC down the line, just that it wasn't there yet when he tried it and isn't the reason for the delay.

Eh. I'm sure you can build up your VR legs for driving games, just like most of the people that used OR DK1 has built up VR legs over the course of using it.

This isn't an issue specific to Sony's VR.

Accelerations and speed are an issue in general right now with VR, and probably will be until we can trick the body better. I've seen complaints about racing demos on OR too.

OR's best practices say:

A racing game could push all these buttons. There might be better ways to deal with this in a racing context but we'll see.

I'm sure their VR demo was not 30fps.

It suprises me people are so quick to jump to, "Sony VR is a failure". Wait no it doesn't.

Also, people need to realize that you almost literally can't try a game in VR at 30 FPS. No matter what the regular 2D version of a game runs it at, if there's a VR Mode, its strictly tied to run at the headsets specs.

Sony Liverpool has been killed off

Can we please stop talking about Wipeout?

IT HURTS

Just because the studio is closed now does not mean... CANNOT mean that WipeOut is dead. You have to keep the faith, man. You just have to.

Who even knows what they are working on now. Just be patient, dude. :)

Surely they aren't dumb enough to try it at 30fps and then say it doesn't work and shelve the project.

It'd need quite a big downgrade to get it running at 60fps in vr, as it's not just a question of doubling the frame rate. I also think Driveclub will launch well ahead of Morpheus, so they might not see it as being worth the effort. I think GT7 will be the vr enabled one. I'd have expected that to be 1080p/60fps anyway.

iRacing is PERFECTLY playable with Oculus Rift, leading me to belive that DriveClub had some "arcade" elements that prevented it to look good to the user in VR at high speeds. Or maybe bluring of the LCD caused problems.

So long as the PGR lead is still there that's all that matters.

Some people complained about frame drops and tearing. Maybe they're focusing 60FPS now? I don't know. Also, Sony may have delayed the game deliberately to fill a gap later this year or when PS4 sales show signs of dropping.

I've seen complaints about iRacing, and people making and looking for suggestions on how to reduce motion sickness with it.

It's true that some - most? - people build up legs, I'm sure it's true that people have no problem at all even starting out with that, but I think it's also true that speed and acceleration is something that has to be handled with care for a generally comfortable experience in VR. Heck, I remember Palmer Luckey talking about how even a game like Unreal could be tricky in VR because its run speed was 30kph.

I expect (and hope) VR to focus on slower paced games. I'm quite sensitive to motion sickness (I couldn't play the Mirror's Edge demo more than once because of it), and I'm afraid it would be even worse with a headset.

VR with racing games will be difficult to implement. You have the dissociation between the equilibrium sense in your ears that perceive no movement while your eyes perceive it.

thats a bit harsh. It needed extra work.

Yep, but a year of extra work?
Something must have been severely broken or unfinished, or they're adding a bunch of new stuff to it. But I still don't get why the annouced the delay so short before release. If you need an extra year you should notice that at least 6-8 months before release.

My expectations are pretty high now.
I want mindblowing graphics, very good gameplay and a lot of content. And I'm excited to see what the social stuff is all about, since thats what caused the delay supposedly.

Why are you saying it's been a year?

are we talking about GT7 or the prologue here ;)

GT7 2019 release confirmed.

Disappointed to hear that racing games prove problematic in VR. Probably the genre that had me most hyped about VR. Maybe driving a Suzuki Cappucino around the Ring will be fulfilling enough!

Well this is the crux of VR. You need to design your game around the idea and not shoehorn it into design later on in development. That's not to say that happened here though.

That's disapponting, I played a ton of racing games on the Oculus Rift and didn't get motion sick at all... :(

Really? It's dissapointing? I think you could only really feel dissapointed if you intended to use the product. From your drivel in the other VR thread, and by taking a look at your post history, it is quite probable you never had the intention of supporting Morpheus.

See below:

Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 looks amazing! True VR experience unlike *cough* Morpheus.

Sounds like a poor mans Oculus Rift, I'm sticking with Rift.

Why can't people be excited that VR seems to be gaining traction? Why in the world would you start a new war where there doesn't need to be one. Bheaze, your beloved Oculus god's are supportive of advancement in the VR space. People with your mindset are the ones who ultimately do nothing but hold back advancements in technology such as this (well, not really, your opinions hardly matter to anyone when they're not backed up by fact).

Heshinsi

"playing" dumb? unpossible
I'm going to give drive club a bit of slack, considering it is a title that was announced for launch that could have released half baked like many launch titles do. So another year of polish isn't as bad as it may seem. Three year Dev time is OK in my books. What I do what to know however is, where the hell is the Last Guardian?

The game and the VR headset will probably launch a year apart. Why would they bother with VR for this title. There will be other games that can take advantage of this technology.

You really shouldn't bother with this guy.
