Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge & SCE London Studio hit by layoffs

Someone get on Spencer so he can reach out to ex-Evo devs and create a new PGR dev.

So if Evo were to be shuttered, that would probably be the death of the arcade racer...dark days ahead.

Funny thing is that some people were buying the PS4 because those people were making games for the PS4

That being said, I'm sure these games will churn out

Who said anything about the teams not making ps4 titles?
If anything, this is the result of a dying platform, where you'll get a few token releases, (ps3) and a dead one (vita).

Plus the PS4 has no AF... What the hell is going on?

Ummm, what are you talking about? The PS4 most definitely has AF. If a game is not using it it is the developer's fault. This has been mentioned several times. A Sony developer confirmed this. Search the forum and you should find it.

can't speak for all studios but if a project isn't looking good, it's not looking good right? why waste more time making it. SMS just went thru this and the same is happening here.

That being said... there are plenty of projects still going on.

So you are saying everything is canceled and we should all welcome our indie overlords?

DriveClub development 'not affected' by Evolution layoffs
The development of DriveClub "will not be affected" by today's layoffs at Evolution Studios, SCEE has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.

The clarification follows this morning's report that Sony would be leading a "focused restructure" at three of its European studios – including Evolution.

An exact number of those affected by the layoffs has yet to be confirmed.

Nevertheless, DriveClub is still without a release date following its delay late last year and is technically still on track for an "early 2014" launch.

We'd still have Playground Games. And the yearly Need for Speed release (whatever that's worth)

To put this in perspective, I had friends at Disney (not their gaming division, but ESPN) that were hit with layoffs and Disney made 8 billion dollars in profit last year. Companies do it regardless of financial standing.

Ugh..... my head hurts...
I hope that was sarcasm....
It was a direct reference to a post the OP made in another thread.
Such a stupid joke and piss poor timing.
True, and I apologize. I'll edit now.

What's interesting is, that this list is seemingly alphabetically ordered. So Crash Bandicoot is possible (hell, a lot in the A-D range is possible), Jak & Daxter is impossible. Also, probably more interesting: Ratchet & Clank and Resistance are ruled out, too.

What is up with Sony lately? I know it's probably business-as-usual, but still...we've been getting a ton of bad press recently about Sony staff leaving / projects getting shut down...

Jack Tretton resigns, the excellent Amy Hennig resigns, SSM project cancelled, two projects cancelled here and studios get shuffled about with layoffs, DriveClub delayed again and again...it gets a bit concerning after a while, you know? Just what IS going on at WWS, guys?

Warhawk 2 also possible.

umm, 2 erased as far as I'm aware

Hmm... I guess this implies that Cambridge wasn't working on a PS4 title of its own ( or yet to start ), but probably only just making maps for Shadow Fall.

Hard to imagine that a layoff at what is already a small team not killing off any PS4 project they have.

Resistance is dead, but we will get a new Ratchet, possibly next year to tie in with the movie.

All the best to those losing their jobs

It's a bit concerning the amount of lay offs, people leaving Sony at the moment. Doesn't look good from the outside.

That is, assuming the next R&C game doesn't have a different title.

I mean, for all we know it could be 'Defenders Of The Galaxy: Ratchet & Clank'

I can't think of a silly innuendo title, sadly.

Edit: In the same way as the first skylanders was called 'Skylanders: Spyro's Advenutre'

Interestingly, there's space for another game beginning with 'S' in that list. Could a certain raccoon be returning?

Well atleast Media Molecule didnt get any cuts.

I wonder how long they will last. Tearaway was a big flop on Vita and there must be some pressure to be cost effective. Wouldn't be surprised if the core leave to form their own studio effectively shutting the studio down. They could probably be very succesful as a multiplat developer.

I really don't understand laying off Evolution staff. You'd think it would be all hands on deck to get DriveClub out the door.

It would be nice to see a positive story about a new 1st party studio being built from the ground up for once. When was the last time that happened?

Such a saviour for gaming.

What a shame, and such a terrible situation to be in. Hopefully those out of work will quickly land on their feet.

Nice observation... ;)

BTW, seems Driveclub isn't affected - since Rushy retweeted the same posted by videogamer.

1. New generation
2. Studios with lackluster output (last years / gen) getting a "reboot"
See SCE Japan Studio.

We had this discussion in every "layoff" thread in the past. Somehow, we have to repeat this every time.

Yeah, Stig's game and a London Studio project.

It's a waste of time really as its not like Sony is ever going to tell us what projects were cancelled, why they were cancelled, etc.

At this point if a project was shot and killed then there is a good chance that it probably sucked. Just because Ubisoft has 6 guys making a rock for their annual Ass Creed does not mean every studio needs that kind of bloat.

Sucks for the Devs though, I hope they all land on their feet.

It makes me wonder how things would've looked if GAF was this big and the media was as broad as it is now back in early PS3 days.

Naughty Dog's 'reboot' as a studio nearly killed them as they transitioned from Jak to Uncharted, with people leaving every week.

Defenders of Uranus: Ratchet and Clank.

Sorted.

Also that list totally leaves space for Colony Wars.

They have 2 current gen consoles. One's doing well and the other? Mmmm let's keep that quiet shall we?

Nintendo have 1 doing well and one poorly and they are in severe dire straits while everything's apparently rosy in Sony's garden.

what? sony as a whole is in a lot of financial trouble despite the ps4 doing well. and with nintendo its the other way round, the wii u might not be selling very well but nintendo isnt in the kind of trouble sony is

Well, the "over 30 games in production, 20 in first year" does sound a bit over-ambitious. It's not surprising if a few gets cancelled as some projects don't really seem to be going anywhere and others perhaps become redundant (i.e. does Sony need another third person shooter from some team when they've already got Uncharted 4, The Order and even possibly planning Last of Us 2? ). Sony did this during PS3's first year as well. They launched a new console and had started all kinds of new projects before launch and were even demonstrating some of them (Eight Days, The Getaway PS3, that one Eyetoy-game IIRC), only to cancel quite a few of them in the end.

Similarly, Microsoft did really well with Xbox 360, but they cancelled a lot of games (including many from Rare) & shut down studios.

Nintendo is more financially stable than Sony is

MM is small as shit and LBP was very successful. They will be fine. That Tearaway was a critical success is all that matters for a Vita title.
