New Mario Golf: World Tour previews

The 3DS triumphed in 2013 with a few key experiences that, conceivably, could devour dozens of hours and make time pass in a flash, experiences both accessible and complex at once.
To our surprise Mario Golf: World Tour could pick up that mantle in 2014.

Polygon

On the course, I was able to simultaneously take my shots, rather than waiting for my friends to line up their moves. As we progressed, small icons would appear on-screen, allowing me to measure their ball's progress against my own. Although the game doesn't feature voice or text chat options, I could razz other players by sending emoticons.

In addition to local multiplayer tournaments, World Tour will also allow players to compete in online competitions at their own pace. Players can simply set their rules, play a course and submit their score, the representative said.

"You also have the ability to join special communities that will have tournaments with special rule sets," the Nintendo rep said. "People can really play the game however they want. Some people want to play Mario Golf with realistic courses, no items, basically really limit things to more of a traditional kind of golf setting. Other people want to have the craziest — all the items on, just completely bananas."

15 minutes was all it took to sell me on Mario Golf: World Tour for the Nintendo 3DS. Now I know that a demo that brief is barely enough time to scratch the surface of a game, but World Tour’s fast-paced, energetic, and wildly entertaining local multiplayer mode immediately sunk its teeth into me.

Destructoid

I only had about ten minutes of hands-on time with Mario Golf: World Tour, yet I was able to have fun despite my lack of interest in the sport.

Nintendo World Report

Roster:

-Mario
-Luigi
-Peach
-Yoshi
-Daisy
-DK
-Bowser
-Wario
-Waluigi
-Boo
-Bowser Jr.
-Diddy Kong
-Mii
-4 unannounced characters

There's actually plenty of new info over those previews. I'd gather it here if I felt more like it :p Go give those sites visits instead. Nintendolife's preview is very extensive. GameXplain did a good job too. Polygon's preview is meh.

That Polygon preview is less snarky and shorter than any Polygon article should be. Perhaps they couldn't find anything to hate?

I kid. The multiplayer tournaments look fun - are you able to see the other player on screen as well? Or just their shot?

Touch screen controls sound neat. I'm excited for this and also good to see some sorta RPG-ish mode for those who missed that in Mario Tennis Open.

When is this slated for release?

I've gone quite some time without giving my (poor) 3DS XL any attention. I got a Vita and that kind of become my "go-to" handheld of the moment. This game could change that.

I want this. I want it bad.

Seems a better attempt than Mario Tennis: Open Court. I hope this game is good because I have the urge to play Mario Golf again. It also seems to have RPG elements like the Gameboy game. Seems like this may be another zero hype to day one for me (DKC:TF and SM3DW).

Early May it seems for most regions. So one more month to go!

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

I hope this translates over to Mario Kart 8 as well.

I wonder who these could be. Maybe Rosalina will be one of them? Metal Mario?

Can't wait for this game. If it's half as good as the GC version or a quarter as good as the last Everybody's Golf then it will be handheld game of the year for me.

I'm the first type 90% of the time and the second type 10%. Having these options is so important, it really puts my mind at ease to know that Nintendo was thinking about stuff like that while making the game.

What I really like is slightly wacky courses but with proper golf shots - so no items. That's my idea of perfect mario golf.

day 0. looks much more like MG64 than toadstool tour. items are kind of crazy though, hopefully there is the option to turn them off or play in games without them too.

Also, one of the huge parts of any golf game is the number and quality of courses. I don't want the number of courses spoiled for me, but 6 is basically my minimum, with 8 an ideal. I mean, I'd accept 5, but I wouldn't be delighted with that. Less than 5 would be a non-buy.

It'll be interesting to see how many there are. My prediction is 6.

I just hear about Castle Club now? A one player campaign mode with light RPG elements?

Well fuck me, that's a day one purchase. Might not be up to the level of the GBA game, but that's all I want from a Mario Golf title. I believe it's only $30 too.

I'll copy this part over, just because this information is all new and there still seems to be some confusion about it.

While it's too early to say whether Mario Golf: World Tour has a fully immersive RPG-lite experience to suck us in for months on end, we can say that the potential is undoubtedly in place.

Beyond buying items, however, the Castle Club is the area that will dominate most play time. It's a sizeable, colourful place in which you run around with your Mii, and to a degree has a slight vibe of Animal Crossing: New Leaf — from the quirky running animation of your avatar to the characters standing around happy to exchange a few words, it creates a peculiar but delightful environment to explore. Aside from some minor tips from obliging characters, you're left to explore rooms, trying different doors and staircases to stumble across areas with no aim other than to provide some charming context, and others that house tournaments and challenges.

Beginning in a building, you eventually venture outside to where much of the action is to be found. Our time-to-date has taken us through early stages, beginning with a "practice round" on one of three initial courses to set a handicap — from that point you can enter tournaments and gradually progress to Championship rounds. A typical 18-hole round takes us between 30-45 minutes, and consistently developing skills, tweaking clothes and items and learning courses takes away any sense of repetition. Beyond rounds on courses there are also extremely useful challenges that cover drives, approach shots and putting at multiple difficulty levels, useful for accumulating coins and perfecting technique. We feel like we've barely started to see what's on offer, only catching hints and question mark teases of an expansive and substantial set of unlockable treats and courses.

Definitely sounds better than Mario Tennis on 3DS. Will it live up to the GBA ones? Maybe, maybe not. But it does seem to have some kind of RPG career mode.

Wait....is this not coming to the Wii U? If not, what a joke. No wonder the Wii U is dying. First no animal crossing and now this?

Tennis was EXCELLENT gameplay/mechanics wise, but just kind of lacking in content. Wasn't much to do at all and everything seemed incomplete.

The delays on this game suddenly make a lot more sense. Probably was going to be similar to Tennis, then they changed their minds.

what? the whole power shot system thing was mandatory online and was pretty broken.

This game is looking promising, but problem is, mario golf gbc is already available on VC.... im not entirely sure why i want this :/

Never played online. I had an absolutely blast with it offline and it reminded me of the addicting gameplay from the GBC one.

This still remains my second most anticipated 2014 release, behind Destiny. I put so many hours into the GCN and GBA ones, I need my Mario Golf fix!

Agreed.

Lack of content is my biggest concern. If they included a large number of course, I would be be delighted. You're right in that it will probably be around 6, but that would still feel light.
