Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2014 (Mar 17 - Mar 23)

I didn't really think of it that way, since I'm not totally cognizant of the content per game, but I can see that.

Also, Natural Doctrine releases soon.
Pretty jazzed to get my hands on this...though I'm not expecting a sales blockbuster.
This game looks ultra-niche.

Hopefully its a good jrpg. I need to see gameplay vids and stuff.

To those saying "Nintendo can't compete with the rise of smartphones", I really don't think that thinking is accurate or healthy. Nintendo essentially created a premium gaming device with the 3DS. I think what they're realizing is that with the right set of parameters, they can make a healthy market (hopefully larger than the 3DS especially in the West) at this pace.

Here are the things I think they need to look at in their next console:
1. Lower hardware price out of the gate - I'm pretty sure they won't release their HW at $250 again. However, I think even $170 is too expensive. Something in the $99-$150 range (multiple SKUs) sounds reasonable to me.

2. Lower game prices - The DS to 3DS generation saw an increase in software prices. I realize this likely has to do with development costs, but I seriously think Nintendo has to shoot for $30 games again, maybe $35 for premium games (Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, etc.). With smartphone gaming and Steam decreasing the perception of game prices a lot, Nintendo needs to lower their prices as well to match the market. I think a price range of $20-$30, with $35 for "premium" games is best. DKC 3D and Animal Crossing seemed to be a small test of that (they were both sold at $35 iirc), and eShop titles seem to be priced more cheaply (AA at $30, some old releases like Inazuma for $20, etc.)

3. More frameworks like Unity and NWF. I think what Nintendo is doing with the Wii U for indies is what they'll put in their next handheld. Make it super easy for developers to make software on your device, and they at least might give it a shot. Apps from random developers is honestly what got the iPhone app market to start blooming. That kind of creativity could really help the eShop in the future and is already starting to so far. It seems like Nintendo recognizes this and I hope they do more interesting things with this in the future.

4. Make customers happy with their purchases on the device. Provide extra value that's hard to replicate on a smartphone or other device. Just like Apple and Sony give you incentives to stay within their ecosystem, Nintendo should do the same. The account system is the most obvious one. People here have discussed the rest.

To the guy who asked about how the 3DS is selling compared to other consoles in Japan, I think it's 5th on the list right now?

This is what I vaguely remember.
1. DS - 34m or so
2. PS2 - 20m+?
3. PSP - 19m+
4. PS1 - ? (no idea about this one, but I think it's high)
5. 3DS - 15m+ (ongoing)
6. GBA - 15m LTD

NOTES
- Kenka was 1 minute late.

I changed the percentage results formula. Before the max error was 100%, now it is 200%. From 0 to 100% it grows linearly, from 100%+ to 200% it grows exponentially. Also, what is shown now is the mean of such errors.

The reasoning is because I wanted there to be a difference between someone who was wrong 100% and someone who was 150%, but still without allowing one game where you wrong by 500% to ruin your entire set; and, the results don't change drastically from the previous formula (in this month, it would actually be the same ranking).

Better later than never? ...

A bronze medal! I'm serious business

Lol @ 100 % underestimating Wii U :D

I don't see Nintendo risking another handheld so soon, especially when the 3DS seems to be doing fine in Japan for now.

Their next handheld must be really thought through well enough to sell.

Again, they run the risk of a repeated Wii => Wii U-style bungle if their handheld business loses too much steam before the next iteration. And the handheld business is the only stable pillar they have right now. The half-dead Wii U and the completely nebulous and unproven QOL stuff are not helping them hedge their bets.

I'm kinda beginning to think the 3DS's current trajectory is a logical symptom of overly conservative hardware specs. It started way too fast.

Natural Doctrine has been mishandled I think. I don't see any hype for it, while when it was announced it had some attention for being one of the few PS4 third party games. Then it disappeared, and it was even delayed. I'm expecting bomba, but what do I know?

Also, PS4 prediction is easy. Since it has stabilized at 30k per week, 30 x 4 = 120k.

Good point. The way how Nintendo let the Wii die in its last 2 years or so is probably one of the main reasons why its successor is doing poorly atm.

I didn't really think of it that way, since I'm not totally cognizant of the content per game, but I can see that.

I'm probably the only one who thinks like that, but it sounds logical. They had that 4th girl for the IOS game which would at least be a new story but she's not a Kanojo in NLP+.

LP is basically like any dating game (fill bars in a limited amount of days) while each girl's story plays out. The story in all 4 games (+IOS=5) being the same. Then the special thing is that you play on after that and they slightly update that with activities like day trips, but that just doesn't seem to be enough of a change to keep the series alive. IIRC a lot of what they put into NLP+ now is actually the same content that they put into LP+, but which wasn't NLP.

That's a shitton of abbreviations.
Not that more than 5 ppl on GAF care about LP.

1. Lower hardware price out of the gate -

2. Lower game prices -

3. More frameworks like Unity and NWF.

4. Make customers happy with their purchases on the device. .

Hmm posters keep saying the next handheld should launch at 99-150$ but that just seems impossible to me. Would be amazing sure, but you also usually launch a bit above what you're comftortable selling at for a long time, so I think 200$ at launch selling at 150$ for most of its life and then dropping to 99$ is the bottom limit.
Unless something crazy like the suggestet phone-like iterations happens.

2. Well yeah that's down to production costs, maybe if they can push digital more, but just look at the square-tax and otaku-tax games selling in japan, they go up to 6k-7k on handheld and even higher on consoles. Pubs will milk what they can get.

3&4 sure, that would help a ton, Japan really needs to get down with middleware soon.

The fundamental problem with any comparison to the Wii -> Wii U transition is that 3DS actually has 3rd party support. It's really much more like DS -> 3DS and given the state of 3DS software sales Nintendo probably has a good 2 years ahead before that have to make the jump.

PS2: 22 million
PS1: 17.4 million
PSP: 20 million
GB: 32.4 million

Sorry, too early, that's actually very sudden and sad. Must've been a long(ish) time coming with the Miku comment though. These blogs are fun hope the others stay around.

Next target: PS4
3DS?

Can you really say the PS4 has for sure stabilized given that MGS came out this week?

It's a joke because Aostia keeps insisting PS4 has stabilized, many people disagree. Just eh..."friendly" sales-age banter ;D

I don't think high-end (retail) software is going to go down, nor do I think price will either at least for the 3DS successor.

Price is all about development costs or niche appeal. You can't change that. I think DD gives them the opportunity to vary prices and play around with business models though. That's where this will happen, not the price of a first-party retail games.

Also the unit price isn't likely to go down much either. They need to have some ability to hang with phones and those are simply really expensive and subsidized. I think they naturally have to be more expensive both to facilitate new ideas and/or keep pace. I don't see them hitting much under 20000yen ($200). I think that's too little to make a product appreciably better than the 3DS.

What they need is more incentive to carry it and more things to do with it. More crossover with popular phone apps would be a great start.

If they need something cheaper I'd create a new product class.

Yes. It's just a general 8% tax instead of 5% on the price at the moment of the sale.

The prices don't actually change. For instance, the 3DSLL price was 18000 yen and it will still be 18000 yen. We're just used to working with the post-tax number (18900) as if it were the price.

I'm still considering how I should change that on my database. Most places are storing both prices.

amazon.jp rised prices for everything. I'll wait to see what prices Media Create will use.

If people really rushed to buy hw and sw before tax increase strikes we should see drops next week (we would see them either way since there wasn't software releasing).

http://www.resourceinvestor.com/2014/03/31/gold-sales-by-japan-retailer-jump-fivefold-before?ref=hp

Gold sales by Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry K.K., Japan’s biggest bullion retailer, increased fivefold in March as investors accelerated purchases before the nation’s consumption tax rises tomorrow.

Sales at Tanaka’s seven directly-owned stores jumped 423 percent in the first 27 days of March, compared with the entire month a year earlier, the Tokyo-based company said in an e-mailed statement. Sales for the quarter through March 27 were 249 percent higher than the same three months in 2013, it said. Tanaka didn’t provide a yen value for sales.

Yasuhiro Endo, a 59-year-old office worker in Tokyo, was among those buying gold bars for the first time this month.

He paid about 800,000 yen ($7,779) for two 50-gram and three 20-gram gold bars from Tanaka’s store in Ginza, one of Tokyo’s luxury shopping districts.

“Gold is a safer asset than stocks and currencies as it will not bring huge losses,” Endo said.

Japanese consumers are saving.

Not sure if we're on the same page, but just to clarify, I didn't mean to compare the 3DS to the Wii U at all.
If you're saying the Wii lacked third-party support and that makes it incomparable to the 3DS as a starting point for a transition, okay, fair enough. Although I'm in the camp that believes that 3rd parties did actually try on the Wii as much as they should have, and their abandonment was rational given the user base composition. That's not a danger the 3DS will have to face, I don't think.

I'm just saying that leaving a year or two of breathing room for the QOL platform, whatever it may be, to gestate before iterating on the 3DS again may not pay off. I'm not convinced the QOL strategy will bear fruit. Seems very risky to me to prioritize it.

The issue I have with replacing the 3DS is that Nintendo does not have any other source of income at the moment. I don't think they're profiting of the Wii U. If it still relies on support from Japanese publishers, the system is inevitably going to have a slow start.

Also, gimmick is ultimately just a weasel word. If a product has a unique feature that pushes it off the shelf, who gives a shit if it "pushes gaming forward" or whatever.

And crazy weather.

No, this time the weather is perfect, and the sakura just opened, so everybody is going to parks to see the cherry blossom.

So this time the excuse for the bad sales is that people are so busy seeing the sakura that have no time to buy games. :)

I think most people agree it's their only notable profit source.

The core of the debate seems to revolve around whether it makes more sense to use that to sustain the company and leverage what additional profits they can (for example, trying another revision or focusing on just making software revenue), or to try and proactively protect their handheld business through a successor.

One is in theory safer short term and the other safer long term, but the latter has the caveat that if they mess up then everything blows up in their face whereas they can't really mess up to the point they're losing money by just sitting on the 3DS.

That said, since the Wii U seems to be going no where, if QoL bombs, they have to launch a 3DS successor on one income stream eventually anyway unless they intend it to be their last handheld.
