Rumor: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel by 2K Australia for 360/PS3/PC

2K Australia is working on a Borderlands "pre-sequel" for Xbox 360 and PS3, according to a report over at online retailer GamePointsNow. It takes place on Pandora's moon, Elpis, and features four new lead characters - Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer and Fragtrap.

Certain of these names will be familiar from previous games. Wilhelm is a boss from Borderlands 2, now armed with drones and a shoulder-mounted cannon in place of his loader clamps, while melee-focused Athena made an appearance in the first game's General Knoxx DLC. Fragtrap, of course, is a heavier-hitting version of the infamous Claptrap.

The story reportedly sees you carrying out orders for "John" - the lowly programmer who would grow up to become Handsome Jack - as he searches for an alien artefact. There will be two new classes of weapon - lasers and Cryo guns, which can be used to freeze opponents. The Moon's low gravity will affect the flow of combat - you can blast bandits into orbit, and use jetpacks to move around quickly. You'll also need to worry about oxygen, which is lootable in the form of "OX-kits".

so a prequel. to the sequel.

sounds cool though, i hope there are more melee focused chars in the future. randomised melee weapons would be awesome.

Really, we're going to shackle to last generation?

I probably won't buy this because of that. It's a shame because I really enjoy the series.

So they are making current and last gen games like Assassins Creed? I suppose it's better than years of cross-gen titles.

The fact that it's already naming people who is in other games of the saga (besides Athena, which is very easy), tells me this is fake.

Everything about that description sounds sweeeeeet (if true). Although the low grav settings of Moxxi's arena caused more than one meltdown of my friends (through resulting glitches)

As much as I want a true next gen borderlands to happen in 2 to 3 years so they have time to really renew the franchise and concept, this sounds amazing and I would play to fuck out of it

You get a B franchise developer to make an iteration for the largest audience whilst your main team makes a more expensive game for less people.

Only after 2014 would I expect that to stop.

And in addition to it sounding like bullshit, is it a full game or dlc? Why would a whole game be dedicated to the moonbase? And if it's dlc, why the hell would they bring four new characters in. I'm surprised people are buying this.

Seems too well thought out to miss April Fools, IMO.

Imo even if it's fake the premise is interesting. I would love to see how handsome Jack and angel helped set up the story for the rest of the games.

Hoping maybe it's a smaller title sort of like we're seeing from Ubisoft with Gunslinger and Blood Dragon. Though I guess if it is a retailer as the source of the story that doesn't seem that likely.

Will get a PC version if it is real.

Eh, not sure about that. Here in Europe, at least the Netherlands but I'm pretty sure we're not the only ones, next-gen consoles are either a) sold out or b) not available yet (Thanks, Microsoft), so even though the PS4 is selling crazy amounts the main market for an 'in-between' product like this (something like Batman: Arkham Origins for example) is last-gen. If you want your budgets small and profit high as a publisher it's your best bet.

Yeah. I was a bit confused why the word interquel wasn't used. I guess it isn't known enough.

Last gen only comes as a bit of a surprise. I'm not sure if I'll be playing or not. UVHM on Borderlands 2 somewhat soured me on the series. I might play if the people I usually play co-op with will play.

After Bioshock, 2K need that cash. They're not going to wait another 2-3 years for a next gen Borderlands 3.

Taking a page out of WB's book.
