Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

It's a better port than DS1, much better, but still expected more.

Maybe the PS4 version will have the true lighting?

I'm just glad to see it's a good port and not a repeat of the previous game. The lighting is disappointing but a really minor issue in comparison.

He he he, poor From Software... it's not good enough to just make a seemingly great followup to a good game anymore is it?

I'd be hype for the PC release, but I just bought it on the 360 somehow.

Only when you promise more in the graphics department. No-one demanded that they do that, but they did, then they didn't really.

Don't know why people are making such a big deal out of the graphics. I understand the Watch Dogs downgrade outcry since the game was all about graphics. The souls games however were never good looking ones. Just be thankful that the PC port is not atrocious like DS was

I'm ok with this, but it still is a little disappointing.

This is basically why we should hope for Demon's Souls 2 to be real, because this game would be made from the ground up for next gen aka PS4.

I may just wait for this to hit steam sale prices. I already played through it on PS3 on a rental copy. A stable framerate is really the big difference here.

You expected them to completely overhaul their lighting engine for a PC port?

some dirty liar said:
Q: The demo presented during the event ran on PC. This means there is also a PC version developed in-house?

A: The version shown before the interview actually ran on PC. If the first Dark Souls was adapted from consoles to PC, this time, it's the opposite. The PC version serves as a base
PC was supposed to be the lead platform this time
I think people were expecting a modern lighting system that was maybe scaled back for consoles, not for ps3 to be the lead platform then ported out from there with 2006 era "PC enhancements"

for better lighting

The amount of people expecting different lighting is indicative of how little users here know about game development.

Don't care. I didn't even really mind the ps3 graphics to be honest.

What is more bothersome are the long ass load times. Which won't be present on pc.

Yeah I know. Why should anyone be upset at misleading marketing? People should just accept this type of bait and switch and be happy about it.

Th PC version isn't out yet and we know exactly what we are getting. This was not true for the console version but it's been clear for awhile now that we weren't getting an older build.

Well that's good I guess. It immediately looks less like shit than the PS3 version which is a check mark. I guess I'll sell the PS3 version and wait for the PC port to drop to $20.

People can be upset about whatever they want. And other people can laugh at the daft upset people subsequently.

No, people are just way to sensitive about these sorts of things, and way to eager to get out their pitchforks. You really think this was all some ploy to get more sales?

Those early previews continue to haunt this game.

well, From pulled a false advertising stunt and mislead so many people. they made comparison to the revel demo inevitable and they deserve any bad comment they get over it.

This actually looks pretty good but I'm sad at the lack of good lighting. I'll probably pick it up in the Summer.

Its not just the lighting that was gutted

The Reveal and TGS Demo had significantly better textures and geometry.

Its like the lead platform and original vision was scrapped halfway through and they focused instead on the console version as the lead platform

Another preview of the PC version.

The lighting was changed drastically, to a point where torches were basically useless and various textures lost some fidelity. Unfortunately, the PC version of Dark Souls 2 doesn't fix this. While this shouldn't come as a surprise, those hoping for a drastically different looking game will be sorely disappointed.

Of course, all of this is made even better by the fact that the game runs at a solid 60fps.

So, did ScamSoftware lied when they said PC is the lead platform?

Because that looks simply like a port of the console version.

The thing that get's me is that when Namco and FROM initially revealed Dark Souls II, they put up the re-done lighting engine as one of the central differences from Dark Souls 1, and now it's gone.

This'll be a fun thread to follow.

Really disappointed in how From handled DS in the last few months. If you are going to release a completely different game at release you owe it to the consumers to at least mention that, if not in the preview builds then up to release. And to those saying "stop whining this happens all of the time"...well, sure, but the scale of this is pretty massive.

The souls franchise has never been about the graphic fidelity. As long as they retain the amazing atmosphere and gameplay then I'll be grabbing it day 1.

Its pretty stupid to go "Hey guys, our game looks a lot worse now" right before release.

It was what they seemed to have done, but the problem was that scaling back as much as they did resulted in having to overhaul the level lighting (as in reducing the number of actual dynamic lights and adding ambient lighting etc.) and bringing that back would have meant going through all the levels again and balancing them again for the dynamic lighting which then would have resulted in supporting two completely different versions of levels for each patch to come. The only way it's going to come back is after the current console versions are done with (DLC and patches released) and they end up working on versions for PS4/XB1 and then update the PC versions with the assets from those versions.
