Media Create Sales: Week 14, 2014 (Mar 31 - Apr 06)

Lol this entire post is ridiculous. Whether you like it or not, the blame for Wii U and PS4 having terrible sales lies on the Japanese and the overall migration from consoles to handhelds and mobile. The reason that this does not affect the PS4 in the long run is the fact that the PS4 is selling gangbusters elsewhere in the world making Japan irrelevant sales-wise for the time being. This persecution complex shit really needs to stop.

Exactly. It is the Japanese 3rd party publishers fault that both Wii U or PS4 are selling horribly there. Sony's fault as well for having a very weak launch for Japan.

Right now everyone seems to be more focused on profits rather than making games unfortunately. The larger companies. Thankfully the smaller ones are still doing what they do, but the quality of the products they bring out isnt what the majority of what "modern gamers" want. So they remain niche. Unless there is some sort of miracle like with what happened for From Software and Demons Souls which lead into the Dark Souls series. Though its more people just finding their roots, since From Software really did nothing different as the design MO is what they have always been doing.

Anyways there are a lot more problems going on that people realize. Ill just stop now since for the most part posts like these are a huge fucking waste of my time as hardly anyone actually pays attention to it.
Pragmatism slowly killing off the industry it seems. While EA is sucks, at least they still releasing actual games, new IPs or not that moves many unit on traditional gaming platform like Titanfall, not betting it wholly on mobile.
24th of this month thats when SAO comes out on the Vita. Might move some units.

Also 26th of June for Freedom wars. This will most def move units.
Does Freedom Wars have a lot of hype there?

Can't really blame them for their unison conservative approach to the market.

Oh I certainly believe much of the failure comes from Sony. How hard could it be to make a new hot shots golf seriously?

But I still think that at the end of the day even if they accept that it's still disappointing. T

Hot Shots Golf and Pupeteer Remaster should have been scheduled for April / May release to fill some voids. I would have ported Soul Sacrifice Delta too (even if it's 1-2 months late compared to the Vita version).

Do think that its just a huge mass of problems that caused the poor launch and not just set to a single entity.

I don't think Andrew House is the problem either. It seems to be quite a smart guy, but what can he do? He knocked at SEGA's headquarters door and they only offered to him a Yakuza port. He knocked at Bamco and they offered nothing. He knocked at Konami and they refused to port PES. He knocked at Square but... I think you get the idea.

They could (and should) have paid some money or helped with more cross-gen efforts, but they don't command third parties.

It still surprises me that TK didn't announced Toukiden for PS4/Vita. They seem to have quiet a good relationship with Sony (which I love, in the past few months they've become one of my favorite publishers. Atlus is first though.)

SAO S2 will start in the summer iirc so that game might have legs.

We could see a similar effect (but more limited) that the one we saw with Youkai Watch. In the best case I don't think they'll sell more than 300k units though.

It'd be interesting (for this game sales) if the channel that has SAO made a re-run of the first 2 seasons.

I expect Vita adds on every SAO chapter. They should promote both this game and Freedom Wars.

Both Puppeteer and GT6 should be PS4 launch line up and you'll see the one of the number skyrocketed. But no, two GT games for every Sony consoles!

Well, my expectation that the PS4 will hit Wii U territory soon after release seems to come true. While the console sells everywhere just fine without games (and with that I mean fresh retail games) this is not true in Japan.

Sony Japan just doesn't have a strategy other than pray. It worked with the Vita somehow which seems to have settled nicely and might actually overtake the 3DS at some point. But selling a home console in Japan needs more than praying. Where is Hot Shots Golf for the PS4? Or Ridge Racer?

I am a little bit disappointed by this since this means that japanese devs will focus on handhelds and with the abysmal sales of the Vita in the West there is a risk that at some point those games wont be released in the west anymore (still waiting for Type-0 and VC3 and a couple of RPGs on the PSP).

It boggles my mind that we don't have a new Hot Shots Golf. Ridge Racer I can sort of understand because of Driveclub, but there is no excuse not to have a new Hot Shots Golf.

This launch boggles my mind in general. Sony should have ensured that there are a few more games on PS4 for the Japanese launch, that appeal to Japan. I guess their plan was to secure the West first and then worry about Japan later. How much later is later though.

I also have to agree with these. Another thought comes to my mind; Why in the hell would they have games like Natural Doctrine cross gen with PS3 & PS Vita? They should've had it PS4 exclusive, along with Hot Shots Golf as a PS4 exclusive.

Both Puppeteer and GT6 should be PS4 launch line up and you'll see the one of the number skyrocketed. But no, two GT games for every Sony consoles!

Yeah, that was a dumb move as well.

From what we know about Sony they are used to the slow burner starts just that this time they went and fucked up a bit more than usual here in Japan by not having proper exclusive titles ready for the system.

It's also a completely different situation to where they have been in the past. There simply isn't the 3rd party support in Japan as there was in the past and i think this will effect Sony's ability to turn things around this gen.

Its more the companies are making them irrelevant by not putting in actual effort keeping up with the tech or just wanting to half ass things and expect people to shell out for it. Or they start whorring out their IPs to devs overseas in hopes of hitting it big with the Western market, which is quite hit or miss.

Problem is keeping up with the tech costs a lot of money and means you need to reach a much larger audience to be viable. This is a lot easier said then done and it's why so many devs are giving up on home consoles. Why keep fighting to keep up in this expensive tech race when you can move to more viable platforms with a much healthier outlook?

Right now everyone seems to be more focused on profits rather than making games unfortunately.

That's not a new thing and it's never going to change.

Yes it does. Esp the fact that the thorn system reminds people of Attack on Titan. Folks are going to pick up the game just based on that alone. The artwork style already has a lot of folks impressed too.

A year or so ago, the same argument was put forth for the Wii U when it was struggling after the initial launch sales bonanza.

How did that work out for them?

This could very well be a repeat of the Wii U situation with drops as low as the infamous 3-4k/week that the Wii U endured before the bundles/price drop. Only this time, the shoe is on the other foot.

Sony Too™!

Yeah, that was a dumb move as well.

Well, really dumb moves I said as it is not only hurting PS4 potential sales, but also GT series. We got GT 5 in 2010, then 6 in 2013. Is that we should wait another three years for GT 7 on PS4? Fuck no, GT6 already almost invisible due to new generation hype worldwide. The hype wouldn't be there as much as a PS4 launch title.

You have to think of it as doing a pitch to investors basically. Apparently it worked on some who did multiplat stuff, but the fact that they couldnt convince long time partners to go in with a launch title, something obviously went wrong. On whos side that for sure we will never know.

I know, but lots of people were still playing GT 5 on PS3 online. And because that GT 6 wasn't selling on PS3 due to PS4, they had to try to force people to buy GT 6 by shutting down online play for GT 5.

Sony should've had something like that as a launch title for PS4 in place of a no Ridge Racer title or no Driveclub, instead of putting it on a very old, dying platform (PS3). People would've been hyped about that. Same with Puppeteer: They could've also made that as a PS4 exclusive, but nope, they had to put it on a dying system, which resulted in terrible sales.

Sony expected Drive Club to launch alongside PS4. Putting GT6 out on the same day would've killed Evolution.

The diffrence is this time west made it clear where we want their games so any publisher annoucing games for ps3 currently is killing his chances outside of Japan for 2015 releases

Considering how unimpressive it looks, it better be gameplay lol. To me that only shows it's fairly early in development imo.

Well thats a weird opinion since many consider it to look beautiful. Sora looks amazing and the art style is just what you would expect from KH.

Of course its early development but they have already shown gameplay since the Osaka team has been developing it for 2 years.

KH3 is going to be a massive hit for SE, partly because its been like 10 years since KH2
-___-. Majority of KH fans don't even play the handheld games.

I'm surprised at how well I did in December and February. Looking at the gaf averages for some games is amazing. Thanks for doing this every month road.

Define "massive".
Doubt it will match KH2 in Japan.

it most likely won't, but kh2 did about 1.5m including final mix. kh3 could at least do what kh1 did (about a million including final mix).

on a related note holy goddamn shit i didn't know this was the ps4's release schedule in japan through june:

april 14: final fantasy xiv
may 22: infamous second son
may 27: watch_dogs
june 05: wolfenstein the new order
june 12: thief
june 26: musuo orochi 2 ultimate

and it's bookended by the only two games that have a whisper of a chance of increasing hardware sales by at least a couple thousand the weeks they release.

I think I will start posting Dengeki numbers from now on since no one post them anymore.

That´s another example... PS4 launched in "important" markets like Brazil, Asia and even Saudi-Arabia among others last year. Really a briliant move...
With a miniscule number of units. Comparatively, even a crappy Japanese launch requires hundreds of thousands that were better utilised elsewhere i.e. the US and UK markets. The half million needed for this past month in Japan would mean a half million less for the US. Are you purposely being ridiculously obtuse and unreasonable?

Could those units in these "unimportant" markets have been better sent to the US and UK, sure. It would make for less of a "global launch" and the ability to tout 32 countries or whatever the number is now.

Japan sucks up units, buys minimal software, and adds 1 to the count of countries launched. What exactly is hard to comprehend?

Well well well yep Natural Doctrine hit low as predicted. Man that cant be good for Kadokawa Games... Cant say its not their own fault though. At least the dengeki numbers showed the PS3 sales too. 17,981 total for all three platforms.

Although I wonder if the Vita numbers includes the Vita copies from the Omochidashi pack.

The difference is that the third parties didn't abandon the ps4 like they did the wii U(though that could happen, who knows.

Japanese third parties do seem to have a slight tendency to stick with Sony hardware despite all the evidence suggesting that it's a bad idea.

And, curiously, it seems to work. I have absolutely no idea how!

The PS4's a much surer thing than the PSP was in its biggest pre-MH slump, at least.

A little too soon to announce a sequel, but they need to start building some hype for a late 2014 release, so it's understandable.

GO HINO!
Its just a rumor so far. I dont doubt that a sequel will come, but it might not be announced soon.

EDIT: Apparently it was confirmed and not a rumor, sorry :)

Also, a chalkboard for PS4 isn't needed needed when we already knew it wasn't going to sell well from the start.

*ahem*

those bullet points on the board all came from somewhere you know :p some of them maybe a bit more tongue-in-cheek than this one though

I think I will start posting Dengeki numbers from now on since no one post them anymore.

Dengeki Week 14, 2014 (Mar 31 - Apr 06)

http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/000/836/836821/

Thanks.

New fiscal year, new rules.

- no more top 3 for PSP, Wii and DS.
- no more software sales for Wii and DS.
- no more hardware sales for Wii and Vita TV; 3DS is now combined.

=\

Dengeki signing the death certificate of DS, Wii and Vita TV. They are also trying to kill Wii U and PS4 faster than anyone else:

Not sure if they're including Vita TV sales with PSV. I don't think so. It seems too low.

Wow. 11k for PS4. I guess there's a chance that it will go below 10k next week on Dengeki.

Its not the same. Sony consoles typically get better support.
