Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

So is this thread now moved towards supporting FROM's work with this game?

Well, I mean it still seems to be a great game even though they made some mistakes along the way.

I still think Namco or From should just apologize for the confusion and be done with it. That's really the only problem I have with this whole thing.

Anyone still buying this deserves where this industry is headed. What a mess.

I expected no less from you. Well done.
I was actually going to wait for this to go on sale for PC since I already have about 120 hours in the PS3 version. But I just went ahead and bought it at full price on Steam.

So buying a sequel to an amazing hardcore game that doesn't hold your hand at any time and offers one of the most brilliant level designs I've ever seen in a game makes it so I deserve casual scripted AAA games with PRESS A FOR AWESUM?

Not sure I'm following your point.

After watching those vids, I'm underwhelmed. The assets are improved, but the lighting looks last-gen. What happened to the game from the reveal?

I guess there's always Lords of the Fallen and Deep Down :p

This post is atrocious. Dark Souls is the best thing that happened to video games in a long time.

Better graphics would have been nice and all, but in the grand scheme of things are totally irrelevant.

Dark Souls... 1 is the best thing that happened to video games in a long time. DSII is not.

I wish I was allowed to talk right now and irrefutably demonstrate just how ridiculous the idea that DS2 PC assets aren't improved over their console counterparts is.

Still excited for the game, but it is a shame that the lighting that they initially had is gone. The lighting really painted a darker tone with the game and helped make the inclusion of the torch to be necessary.

But back to other things besides the lighting, the PC version looks to have better textures(obvious), a little bit more brightness, although they may have set up one or the other platform with different brightness settings. Another thing, is that there is a less focused camera for cutscenes, so you get to see everything. Oh, and some AA.

If I missed anything else, feel free to let me know as I'm very curious.

Of course, this area and these events are still in the release build of the game - but with key differences. In particular:
From this image it seems that the brightness is set too high in the settings: try to lower it down to the bottom, I just checked and I can see almost nothing of what's inside when I'm outside.

BTW brightness down to 0 is the best way to play the game, in my opinion.

Glad they got it to you early!

I don't understand. Why wouldn't you be allowed to talk and say how cool the game is and hype it up? Seems like it's what they need now with all the "pre-order cancelled I'll wait for sales wah" saltiness. XD

They're weird about this stuff. I think even in the PC GB quicklook, Brad said that Namco didn't want them showing full boss fights. The game has been out for a month!

In the videos I've seen I cannot for the life of me tell that the pc port has better textures. The textures might be slightly better, but you can barely tell if that is the case. The higher resolution is the one that is allowing what FROM did with the textures for the consoles to really shine. The same thing was true with DS1. If I may make a request from you Durante is to show areas where the textures have improved.

The pc version of RE4 also claimed to have better textures, but it is also the case where you can barely tell the difference.

Glad they got it to you early!

From his previous post, it seems like it was PC Gamer that got him early access. Another reason to dislike BAMCO and FROM. Here is the guy that generated 10s of thousands of sales because of his fix, and you can't even give him a Collector's Edition as thanks (Speaking out of my ass here - maybe they did).

GameSpot said that if you turn the resolution down to 720p, the game looks literally identical to the console versions.

Namco's Community Manager is cool though. I'm sure he'd give Durante access if he could

No. These are from playthroughs on Youtube. That's how it is in multiple videos, and on multiple TVs in person as well. That's just how the game is. There is a difference from pre-release to retail, there's no denying that.

That's awesome. First PC gamer is running articles about CS maps with two of the communities best creators and now this. They are doing good work over there.
We like working with experts to write about the things they (and we) are passionate about. I'm just as excited as you guys about teaming up with Durante.

I just re-read the agreement I signed, and it's actually simpler to explain than I thought, because I can tell you that I'm working on an article about the technical aspects of Dark Souls II PC for PC Gamer.

And that's all I'll say (and can say) before the article.

Do we have an ETA for that article?

Still one of the top seller on steam.

I'm really curious what the steam numbers are gonna be like.

Dark Souls one being bad out of the box with terrible mouse and kb support and GFWL always maintains 3-8k people on weekdays and is usually in the top twenty most populated games list. This one has been top ten 90% of the time since it was put up for preorder.

Umbasa.

Plis.

Can't wait to see the day one concurrent numbers for Dark Souls II. I think its going to be a monster.

Are you making the OT for us?

What I can say is that no one will be able to complain about not having all the (technical) facts come release day.

More so than about any other PC port in history probably ;)

That's because games always look pretty ugly when they are rendered at such low resolution. But anyway the IGN video clearly showed that textures, models, water quality and more is considerably improved in the PC version. The only thing that disappoints me is the object pop-in, I'm still hoping and SSD might eliminate this too.

That's not what's happening.

I already wish I would have just shut up :p

[Not shutting up and just writing the article on GAF and earning PC Gamer.com's ire intensifies]

Come on Durante, show us some screen shots of this "amazing" port! You can't blue ball us like this.

Why are you posting? Start modding and bring the lighting back. That's why they gave it you.

It is part of the plan.

It begins.

I'm going to work on a 4K screenshot gallery soon. Beyond 4K, if I can manage it.

Did they say that? I thought they were just avoiding it because they didn't want to spoil so much for PC fans.

Not really. Whilst I am very disappointed in the lighting downgrade (made a 45/90 page thread about it) my main problem was with the deception and the fact that FROM/Namco did not do anything close to due diligence in communicating these changes before the console release.

However right now, almost everyone buying the PC version knows exactly what they are buying so there is no real issue to go to war with. I still have problems with the fact that the E3 trailer is the first video on the Steam page, but again I think that people like HyperBitHero and others have done well to publicise the fact that the graphics are significantly worse than what was shown last year, so the vast majority of people going in will know what they are buying.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
All I want is for somebody to make it so all the sconces cast dynamic shadows, and return darkness to the areas that the sconces were clearly meant to actually light in the first place.

Is that so much to ask?

I'm aware it's likely impossible, but a man can dream.

We've all seen the various PC comparison previews and there was some improvements in the textures. But the game didn't exactly look that much different. Much drab flatness remains, and some stiff animations. So are you saying there is a knob that we don't know about that makes the game go to "11"..?

Im a huge fan of your work but im really worried about SweetFX solutions like this in Dark Souls.

From uses weird postprocess effects where they change the contrast based on location, so a SweetFX with huge contrast would look nice in one area and it would look completely wrong in another.

Yep, the only difference is the contrast.

It would be a little more impactful if people weren't comparing compressed images of already compressed to hell videos.
