Okay, that was a tour de force of a Nintendo Direct. Charming, hilarious, and somehow sweet. I went from knowing nothing about this game to absolutely needing it. "Tomodachi" is a word I'll be keeping in my lexicon, as well. It's lovely, somehow.

Bill Trinen nailed that Iwata bow, by the way. Pretty fly for a white guy, I must say.
Sorry.

Thanks for doing this.
You know, I'm not sure this holds water these days. I could see a larger outcry if same sex stuff isn't supported. Maybe it's this liberal city bubble I'm living in. If they went as far as it seems they did to localize it why not update some of the core mechanics? If it was a thing that could happen as a glitch in the original then it can't be that hard to change. The same sex stuff has been in The Sims forever and I sure don't hear anyone boycotting it.

Maybe people are getting more accepting (well, if you're not living in Eastern Europe), but
the negative sort are still very vocal, and may want to make a lot of noise about how this game is 'perverting children'. I'm not sure how far the comparison to The Sims applies, because of Nintendo's image and the more 'child friendly' look of the game.

And could someone clarify if gay relationships (sans marriage and children) are in the game or not?

First the Saturday morning cartoons with cornflakes Smash Bros. Direct and today this... weird thing. Two awesome Directs! :)

Do we know how many save files this supports? I kind of want one island of real/internet friends and then another full of different Will Smith roles.
The Japanese version only supports one save file, sorry :(

Seriously though, the game is batshit insane as it is, why not mix your friends with Will Smiths.

Does anyone with the Japanese version know how many Miis you can import in to the game?
Don't know the exact amount but I'm sure you can import TONS. You can see a screen of the appartment building somewhere in the direct, all the little windows are rooms and each Mii occupies one room. So I guess that's the max.

That's a shame. I was hoping to set-up seperate Game of Thrones, Nintendo, Star Wars and League of Gentlemen communities.

I was going to say something via Twitter but maybe I'll email them. It's actually a big deal to me if they completely leave out the option and I'll definitely be rethinking my support of Nintendo in the future if they don't include it.

Thanks for doing this. I mentioned something on their facebook post.
Thank you for your support! I really want to start some kind of fan movement to raise awareness of this. It may not accomplish anything, but there's no harm in trying, right? I'll probably wait a little bit in case the question of whether or not same sex relationships have been added gets answered in a few days or so, but I want to make some kind of video pretty soon here. For #Miiquality!

I have the game. I've booted it several hundred times to get certain characters to fall in and out of love with other characters, and never once have I seen any character want to be anything more than friends with another character of the same gender. Googling in Japanese also gets me results saying the patch makes it so there is no more gay relationships. There are some people in the thread saying how you can totally still have gay relationships and all the patch removes is babies from said relationships, but I'm not sure if those people actually have the post-patch game themselves and are still seeing that.

Since there still seems to be some confusion about this, If I can find the time for it I'll see if I can test in my Japanese copy to which extent the patch blocked same sex relationships. It's midnight over here though so it's gonna have to wait till tomorrow (if it hasn't been confirmed then already).

I like the idea of your movement, I'll definitely support it!

Hmm.. I kind of hope that Nintendo removed the getting married/having kids aspect of the game in the USA.

Since it rated E for everyone, that might have happened....

If they did, I would love it if they secretly added same sex romance.

Because that would be funny. Instead of addressing marriage.. just removing it entirely and totally letting Iwata flirt with Reggie.

That would be amazing.

That would kind of remove a big chunk of the game. You're supposed to get married, move into a house, have a kid, and then you can send that kid on a streetpass journey where he travels to other people's game. Then you get postcards and stuff showing how he is doing.

Ah well, no way I can make this happen then: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=737230 .

Still, this is my new most-anticipated game.

I did not know that!

I think that I would rather have all of that content be in the game instead of making a political statement. That just sounds like a lot of bizarre fun.

Sorry, LGBTQ community, maybe in the next game?

Even if it isn't put/patched in this game, if enough people raise awareness or show support for same sex relationships in the game, maybe the developers will put that feature in the next Tomodachi game.

I could see someone like EA or Bioware...well mostly third party western devs, or even some third party JP devs adhering to fans, but for better or worse. Nintendo never really listens to anyone regardless it seems,

Anyone know if there will be many differences between the EU and NA version?
A Mii with a British accent and dialect wouldn't represent me too well, lol.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Why does Myamoto's avatar look like a racist drawing of an asian person?
Something I noticed reading books written by Chines people and Koreans is that something a westerner might observe and have someone else call them a racist for for saying is stuff that Asians also observe and don't really find objectionable.

So, a person from Japan can look at a face and come up with a cartoonized version of it, and that would be pretty similar to how an American would cartoonize the same face, but because of context the American's drawing would be assumed to be racist.

Edit: Holy damn this is a big thread, what's going on here?

Wow. This came out of nowhere for me. I mean, I had heard it was coming but this surprise Direct was the most entertaining one yet -- I've never laughed that hard at a video game presentation in my life.

Bizarre things like this just remind me why I love Nintendo. Keep being outlandish, guys -- I think I'm in on this one.

Hear! Hear! It wouldn't be the first time that Nintendo had gay characters, but it would be a step forward from stereotyping them like they do in Tingle's Rose Colored Rupee Land, Captain Rainbow, and Animal Crossing.

I think they should include the option to play as a male in the next Style Savvy. That would be the perfect title to lightly bring up same sex relationships. (Both Male/Male and Female/Female) They could also include an option inside of the main options for parents to use parental controls to disable all of the dating additions to Style Savvy. (Just make it a simple "dating off/on" option. Don't give people the choice to turn off individual aspects. Make it an all or nothing proposition. Style Savvy is an excellent game, but it's just "niche" enough to fly under the radar of those who would be "offended.")

This may sound stupid but I really thought Tomodachi Collection is a spinoff of tamagochi or something. The direct made me feel... weird. Especially since I didn't even know about the direct until I saw this thread.

... I like it.

I gotta wonder if Nintendo hired a new marketing company to handle the creation of the last two directs. If so, they need to keep them :)
