MS won December and it meant nothing in terms of momentum moving forward.

MS not only need to win March NPD but they need to by a massive margin, only a slight win after the massive push they gave with giving away TF in a bundle with a price cut would show that with MS throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it they would have effectively only reached parity with Sony who are still coasting on launch fumes and who have not begun the second push yet.

Anything but a massive win would be failure for MS and even then is no guarantee that they would keep any of that very expensive gain as momentum.

No, being 1:1 is still bad considering the last generation was something like 40M to 27M in Microsoft's favor, and that was just the US.

No way. I still believe the sales will be a lot more frontloaded because of the crazy long last previous gen.

Just like how Wii sales were frontloaded because Nintendo consumers were upset with what the Gamecube had to offer.

I'm assuming you are trying to imply that this thing will crash to Wii U-esque numbers just because there are tons of sales out of the gate. But then again, why not look at any other console ever? Sales slow, that's a given, but the constant flow of sales will be huge. We're probably going to see them bust the 10 million mark before the year even ends.

simple really.

at the start of the ps3 it seemed like the Sony brand was finally over and maybe it was worth giving it another shot with a new console in the next decade that fixed the problems of PS3.

I mean I get it (and the joke, age of Sony am done, etc), and I agree. I think the PS4 deserves it, Sony listened to almost everything gamers wanted and got rewarded. It's just given the troubling recent trends in this industry, I thought no system would be able to push against it for any significant period of time. I mean, it's still possible the system could drop like a rock after this year, who knows... but I'm just saying I'm impressed.

Awesome! Go Sony!!!! So far I bought two PS4's and two copies of Infamous. Might be buying another PS4 in the near future to put in the dining room to use as a blu-ray player when I eat.

Congrats to all at Sony, They deserve this good momentum, PS4 caters too alot of crowds, Hardcore, Casual and the playroom is a popular thing to use. It's cheaper than the x1 and more powerful, It's going to get real bad for MS i feel when more multi-plat titles hit like Batman, Dragon age etc as the ps4 will be the goto console of choice when it's readily available at all times on shelves.

Not really a big deal either way, but GAF will make it into one.

I don't remember price cuts in the US.

Call them price "promotions" then. Either way- XB1's could be had, even with Titanfall, for less than MSRP at several retailers in March.

Agreed. PS2 faced barely any competition back in those days, and was backed by an appealing feature (DVD playback) that was able to pull in non-gamers.

They waited 10 days to announce this. They sold 7 million on April 6th and waited until April 16th, the day before NPD reports go public, to announce that. It's a perfectly logical conclusion that they're doing this because MS won the March NPD and Sony is attempting to steal MS's thunder.

Doesn't explain the benefit of releasing this before MS's triumphant NPD announcement though. After would have been better surely. Who would care after tomorrow about 7 million sold?

If it's about 'stealing thunder' then wouldn't it make more sense to announce this after NPD to put MS 'win' of March into perspective?

People are thinking the sales are going to drop for the PS4, what? Even the fact that PS4 will be RECIEVING VR will cause this thing to keep ticking up in sales.

Sure sales will slow down, technically they have been slowing down throughout its course on the market, but I see this thing going to outsell last-gen sales for sure, sans the Wii.
I think the people on GAF that think this thing will sell PS3 numbers will be in for a surprise this gen.

Yeah if Titanfall cant push the XB1 past the PS4 this month i don't think anything but a severe price cut can this year.

From now till September Sony has all the cards in their hand with Destiny and Watchdogs being advertised for PS4/PS3 exclusively, with extra content and most likely running better on PS4.

The bigger news is that the attach rate is going up. The PS3 despite selling about the same number of units as the 360, had a lower software attach rate. Shoring up that weakness will mean more than just straight units of consoles sold, when the hardware actually loses them money per sale, while software sale is all profit.
